NFT: Random, Giants and non-Giants: Two "side questions."

Beezer : 12/11/2017 2:36 pm
Two things I was wondering about today ...

1.
Giants: Phil Simms goes 11-3, starting 14 games, and goes down. Jeff Hostetler comes in and manages the team, running the table, including going 3-0. Meanwhile, the Carson Wetz/Nick Foles comparisons are pretty interesting. Another team solid across the board, similar record, similar time of season, with a quarterback many believe is a big step back (especially considering the way the team's offense is constructed).

Biggest difference, Hos gave the Giants more mobility, while Foles is going to lose a bit of that. Let's hope the result is NOT the same, as we all root for anyone but Philly.

Is there any other similar situation you can recall that went as well as it did for the Giants that season?

2. Non-Giants/non-football: Aaron Judge at 6-7, 280 pounds, and Mike Stanton at 6-6, 245. Has there ever been a physically more imposing set of bookend batters for a team in Major League history?

Some I can name off the top of my head were certainly physically intimidating, but ...

Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire were large men, but Canseco was 6-4, 240, McGwire 6-5, 250. The ChiSox had Frank Thomas (6-5, 275) and Jermaine Dye (6-5, 245).

Adam Dunn was 6-6, 285 but was all over the place in his career. Anyone ever bat before/after him with insane size?

Might be others, just not coming up with two giants in the same lineup.

going 3-0 in the post-season.
As far as the QBs ...

1972 and Earl Morrall could be mentioned. He went 9-0 after Bob Griese went down. But that team had the best D in the league, as well as an ominous running game with Larry Csonka (1117 yards), Mercury Morris (1000 on the button) and Jim Kiick (521).

The other difference, Griese went down in the 5th game, so Morrall had a long time to hit a stride, although I'm not sure how much of a stride he needed to average 151 yards per game the rest of the regular season, and 139 in the playoffs (while Griese came back for the SB and completed a whopping 8 passes for 88 yards in that game).
