Steve Spagnuolo said the coaches are doing enough in practice to get rookie QB Davis Webb ready to play, and hes not sure what would be gained by elevating him to No. 2.
McAdoo didn't seem to gung ho to play him either. He wanted to play
terrible in practice. I don't get why they wouldn't make him #2 to get a look at him in real game action if the game gets out of hand. They must have their minds made up already that we are getting a QB in the draft and he's not the answer.
want to throw him out there to play in this game. There is a lot riding on this for the Eagles, starting a rookie QB would not be good for the integrity of the game. I'd be pissed if I was a Vikings fan, although I'd be more pissed about the easy schedule the Eagles have had compared to the teams the Vikings have been playing.
give the Eagles first dibs on a rookie QB with no playing experience, a terrible OL and a group of WR's that can't catch a cold. Good call...
I hear you but the flipside of the coin is you can't baby him. This is the NFL. Every defense is nasty. He will be expected to play well against the Eagles and everyone else. It's as good a time as any.
Now - I do agree, no one is looking good in this offense, with these WRs. Even Rodgers. It attacks sideways and even backwards - maddening.
but it is very clear that Spags is going to do everything he can to throw up a Hail Mary for this job opening, and Mara, because he does not involve himself with coaching decisions, will not stand in his way.
It was clear by the way Spags coached yesterday that he's going to play it very tight to the vest the last 3-4 weeks.
Punting from inside the 40.
Punting late in the game down 17-10.
Eli is untouchable now - why bring up Webb
the odds of Eli not finishing a game are very low
Spags wants to win to try to get HC job.. so if Eli did go down then Geno would go in..
Unless Eli gets hurt before end of year .. Webb is not playing a down
I put this in an earlier thread, but I'll repeat because the more
Interesting supposition in Pat Leonard's column today about not playing Webb, that Reese at least in part could have been fired because after seeing Webb since June in camp and practice that they have already determined that he can't play and that Reese reached and wasted a high pick on him while neglecting the OL. Purely speculative, but an intersting theory.
And remember, Sy56 called him a project who was unlikely to become a starter quality NFL QB in his draft review.
Went back to conservative game management and playing the vets. Avery moss saw 9 snaps. They are 2-11, coach like if. I'll give macadoo
Credit past few weeks he was super aggressive in game management
doesn't matter. The Giants are drafting their future QB this offseason. Eli will be a Warner like Mentor or he will be cut and a Warner like Mentor will be signed. No way is Geno Smith around to be the "mentor"..
I think it is clear the Giants organization wants to move on from Eli and the way it happened earlier blew up because of how it happened and who was the messenger (Ben).
I think Eli goes to Jacksonville or Denver with maybe an outside shot at Miami or the Jets.
The Giants will take a QB at #2 (Rosen or Mayfield - I want Mayfield) and then hopefully build some Oline and Dline help from there.
RE: So it was just McAdoos idea to get him some playing time?
No, not just McAdoo. Mara confirmed he asked to get the young guys in there. That was the plan until all the backlash for sitting Eli. Fans complained ownership caved in, so were left accomplishing nothing.

what does it matter though? We are 99% drafting a QB this draft...so whats the worse that can happen. If he sucks we are drafting a QB and he will be a backup...if he's good maybe someone will trade a 2nd/3rd round pick for him and we can get our value back?
True, but Mara is no longer asking either. When asked about it he said flatly their only concern is winning games, and Spags reiterated as much. So whatever intentions they had at one point to evaluate young players, I think it's clear the fan and media backlash squashed them.

Clamored for their young guys to play, then when they did play we all know why they weren't playing, add Webb to the horrendous draft picks that Reese had. But it is too early say the apologists, it was a fucking asinine draft pick and we all knew it then.

bceagle05: good point about Hackenberg
Don't agree with that. The reason Webb isn't playing is likely not because they've already determined he can't play. It's likely because he is a rookie from a spread offense, has a two time SB MVP QB in front of him, the new head coach is trying to win to increase his chance of getting the job permanently, and he'd be killed playing with this offense. There is nothing to be learned by playing Webb now. I'm fine playing him in blow outs, but understand if the Giants don't.
Can you imagine how much this board would MELTDOWN if the Giants pass on every QB next April because they have already decided Webb is Eli's successor? That isn't likely given a new GM, but wow, what chaos it would cause on BBI.
Webb was a good plan as a future QB when they thought they would be a playoff team. The best strategy there is to keep drafting mid-round guys that might develop into something. You take multiple shots (Nassib, Webb, and the next year and the next year) because it's the best you can do. But once they got to a point where they would be picking a blue chip guy, the plan that included Webb made zero sense. Circumstances changed. Webb's not the guy any more. Geno never was the guy and never will be. Eli likely won't be the guy, but he was the guy, and he's best equipped to be the guy until they have a new guy. So, if Geno and Webb are yesterday's plan, there is really no point in causing any angst or even so much as a raised eyebrow in order to evaluate them under game conditions. Evaluation means you have a use for them; they no longer have one.
Right...because bluechip drafted players always succeed and

It seems plain Mara didn't expect the backlash and also some of his thoughts weren't well planned or executed. If you want the rookie mixed in, then you're basically writing off the season, which isn't the right message to send to the locker room or the fans, generally speaking. Tanking and high draft picks shouldn't come into play in that respect, losing is a difficult thing to flush from a football team. Ultimately, he wants the revenue to keep flowing in to finish the year too.
of whether we draft another QB, it's doubtful Webb elevates to #2 next year. a guy not ready to hold a clip board when the season losses don't matter isn't going to be ready next season when losses do matter.
Right now, Giants central are extremely gun shy about doing anything with the QB situation that might not look good. While I would elevate Webb to a meaningless #2 role with the intention of never playing him, the view could be taken that elevating Webb would feed the 'Get him playing time' crowd and piss off the 'hey, you're looking to get rid of Eli' crowd. No matter what is done, some segment of the masses are going to be discontent, so the paralysis of it being simplest just to sit at status quo takes over.

Early last week reports had Webb being elevated to #2. Once they began practicing it became obvious that wasn't the case. He is still not taking any significant snaps in practice.
Also, went they cleaned house and made Spags interim HC

If Eli has been scoring more than 10 points a game I might agree. I think the Eagles want his immobility right where their defense can find him rather than someone who can move and beat them with a broken play or 2.
I wouldnt necessarily expect Webb to start, especially this week against the Iggles, but this kid isnt even dressing for games. Hes apparently not ready to take over for Geno Smith on a 2-11 team going nowhere. So, what is the world is wrong with Davis Webb? Hes played football his entire life, hes a coaches kid and a workaholic type of guy. He did play college football. And yet the coaches cant dress this guy and get him some live fire snaps in garbage time?
In an historically messed up season the Davis Webb situation might be among the most messed up. Why was he drafted if he cant even get on the field? Makes very little sense the way the Giants have done anything this season but what theyre doing with Webb is a complete mystery.
Its possible that prior to being run out of town Reese and McAdoh will have wasted the Webb pick, needlessly ruined Elis start streak and given Eli the motivation to leave the Giants and finish his career elsewhere (something Eli spent the past decade saying he never wanted to do). Yeah, the GM and HC been fired and its beating a dead horse, but the incompetence of the Giants this year is truly breathtaking.

It will be Eli and the same boring scheme.
This is not a knock on Eli, just the way it is.

Great plan. Make all decisions today based solely on the player to be named later,,,
