NFT: Has anybody had a similar experience with a bank/atm?

LatHarv83 : 12/11/2017 7:13 pm
Today I went to make a rent-sized cash deposit at my local chase ATM. A fairly significant sum that certainly impacts my budgeting. As I deposit the cash the machine makes all its normal noises and nothing seems wrong, until suddenly I get hit with an error message that the machine has “hit a snag” (it literally said that) and dispensed a receipt with a phone number for me to call. It did not return my money, and the machine appeared instantly disabled with a “temporarily out of order” message. Nightmare!

So I go through the process of filing a claim. They’ve issued me a temporary credit, but it’s still subject to instant reversal pending their “investigation” which could take up to 45 days. I’ve read some horrible tales online looking into this of people having their credit overturned during that window and you are left in a position powerless to prove yourself

Does anyone have any similar experiences to share?
Why didn't you just use your bank's human tellers?
Diver_Down : 12/11/2017 7:16 pm : link
I would never trust the machines to work correctly, but then again, I haven't use an ATM machine since they were MAC machines.
ooo, sorry to hear that.

Not very comforting from the bank...
I once had an issue with an ATM withdrawal - cash never came out
Giantology : 12/11/2017 7:18 pm : link
but a receipt printed and my account showed the amount missing. Had to call my bank and wait for them to investigate (e.g. actually have someone go to the ATM and count the money to check the cash balance), was told it could be up to 30-45 days but was resolved within a week. Either way, best of luck.

I’ve been met with that response from people I know. I guess my only answer is the ATM is more convenient and I’ve made similar sized deposits before without any issue like this. Sometimes the machine can’t read the money, but it always spits it back to me in those cases, it doesn’t just eat the money and shut down with an error message

Lesson learned though. Just to avoid headaches like this. I’m
Embarrassed to say this but I’m not sure I’ve ever actually physically spoken to a teller or filled out a deposit slip in my life. I’m gonna need to start that though
You will be fine

Because you bank with Chase. They are the best of the best with this stuff.
litterally had the same thing happen last week
Dankbeerman : 12/11/2017 7:37 pm : link
got credited, have the money have heard nothing else since the 5th.

happened inside the bank i walked right in and they filed the whole claim for me an tried to expidite the process for me as I made a deposit with the intent on paying my rent in a matter of hours.

Dont know when they finish the investigation but everything has been fine for a week now

Chase bank right?

Same thing happened a few weeks ago still not resolved. It was a check for my business from a customer. Now the bank wants me to go to that customer and ask for proof of the check if it cleared or not, send them stub via fax etc. or get the check cancelled and reissued. Totally embarrassing to have to do that with a business customer. I flipped out on the phone rep who wad obviously in India reading from their canned lines in response to my displeasure.

I asked them if they were going to compensate me for my time/labor I'm doing on their behalf because of their failed technology. Totally b.s. to the point that I'm switching my business accounts with then to another bank after this.

I highly recommend Wells Fargo. I know they get a bad rep, but they are the best big bank by far.

He was depositing cash.
Happened to this guy also.

Put my months rents in and the ATM stole my money. Bank with Chase got a temp. credit once the investigation was complete, a month and a half later investigation was closed and was able to keep my money.

Hope it all works out with you too. Just a weird experience. Hope we don’t get fucked. If they decide to fight it, I don’t see how we could prove our cash deposit total. Pretty powerless feeling hoping they don’t screw you over. As I said in the opening post I’ve read some stories that go down that way too and it only adds to the anxiousness

Of course the M in ATM stands for machine and this type of crap can happen. Sucks though

Thanks. Good to hear

I think maybe the reason why im finding so many horror stories is that those who have been screwed are probably most likely to
Be vocal somewhere about it. For every one of them there are probably 10
Situations that go seamlessly where the customer doesn’t bother to share the experience anywhere

You should be bounced for this, you fucking prick.
There really should be a speedier way to rectify this

I’m pretty much dreading the notion of having that much money subject to being removed if chase deems so for whatever their reason may be over the next 6 or so weeks. Especially as we head into the holiday season, which gets pretty expensive for me. Just blows to have this uncertainty born out of just trying to make a simple transaction I’ve done so many times before. Sorry for the venting...
The speedier way of not dealing with the uncertainty
Diver_Down : 12/11/2017 9:37 pm : link
is dealing direct with a human teller.

You’re right. What can I say? From now on that’s the way I’m going when it comes to larger deposits, even though that would probably be an overreaction. I’ve done this several times before with just this one error, and thusfar at least Chase has handled this well. It would still be worth it though just to avoid even one more situation like this. I just hope they don’t screw me now.

You're making extremely valuable contributions to this thread! Give the guy a break, dealing with a teller is safer, but he's right that it is a pretty shitty situation that his money is at risk for 45-days, and if the bank reverses the credit there is essentially nothing he can do. I would expect a better process than that.
I'm sure that when they count the cash in the machine
steve in ky : 12/11/2017 10:00 pm : link
it will be over by the amount you deposited. I wouldn't worry too much at this point.

I make it a rule
Giant John : 12/11/2017 10:21 pm : link
Never deposit cash into an atm.
It takes 45 days
Jalapeno : 12/11/2017 10:30 pm : link
for them to compare the time stamp of your error receipt and error message of the ATM and compare it with the time of the ATM footage showing your "WTF?!" face?

Ridiculous.
Just knocking this up a page

To see if this hits a chord with anyone else.
I made a close to mortgage size deposit once......
Tom [Giants fan] : 12/12/2017 11:51 am : link
and it actually missed a $20. I went right in to the branch and told them what happened. They gave me the $20 credit and it was confirmed that it happened that way. I am guessing maybe there is an issue with Chase ATM's when it comes to cash deposits?
