How about Bill O'Brien?

ThatLimerickGuy : 12/11/2017 10:16 pm
Michael Lombardi says he will be fired at seasons end.

Personally he would be my top pick. Guy is a hardnose coach who turned around 2 teams pretty quickly.
If so

It must be the hard nosed part. Didn't have a QB until Watson...was winning with him until the injury.
Huge # of 3rd string QB starting until DW.
How much of a knock

does he get for thinking he could win with Osweiler?
He shuold be on the list

Being from the Belichick tree is a knock against him
I can't believe Houston would let him go
PatersonPlank : 12/11/2017 10:37 pm : link
He's a good coach, his team was ravaged by injuries. Watson, Watt, lost his LT, etc. Just shows how fickle organizations are. I'd love to get him.

He seems to think he can win with a bunch of pretty lousy QBs.

There's at least some speculation that he didn't want Osweiler. But he did want Savage, so he doesn't get off completely clean in that department.

Hire

O'Brien, trade for Hackenberg and draft Fitzpatrick.

Exactly. He brought in Hoyer, Mallett, Osweiler and Savage. He WANTED those guys but somehow has managed to convince people that the GM was making all the QB decisions without any input from the HC who's a supposed QB guru.

Plus he had Case Keenum on his roster - maybe that was the guy he should have tried to develop.

Not sure if he’s a fit for the Giants
Metnut : 12/11/2017 10:48 pm : link
but Notre Dame should immediately shitcan Brian Kelly and hire him if available.
he wanted to get savage?

Terrible talent evaluator. At Penn state, he took a slow linebacker, hodges, and made him the punt returner. He couldn't even field a punt. He dropped everything. He took a backup wide receiver and made him the primary back. It took several losses and continuing horrible play until he realized his mistake. He did things like this constantly. His carousel at qb in Houston was the same crap. Had he stuck with Fitzpatrick the one year, he would have made the playoffs, but nope, he inserted Mallett. Made the same mistake the next year. Id hate to see him here

Yeah, the Jets got a lot out of Fitzpatrick in 2015 while Houston was playing Hoyer and Mallet.

And don't forget JJ Watt at QB at the goal line in a playoff game!
I’m a huge fan of Billy O...

Would scoop him up fairly quickly if Houston parts ways.

Northeast guy, ivy leaguer, Belichick ties, revived PSU, and has done some credible things in Houston with some major injuries over the years...
It would be a very good hire
Sy'56 : 12/12/2017 4:22 am : link
And ownership will make them take a QB early. I think there is some credibility behind the statement that O'Brien has a sub-par track record when it comes to evaluating QBs. Based on who has gone after in the past, I think he would like a guy like Josh Allen, which I would not endorse one bit.

However I do see some Rosen/O'Brien connections which, at this point, wouldn't be a bad move if they trust his intangibles. Ownership will be VERY involved in the decision for QB.
Please no

I'd actually like the hire

Went to PSU after all the turmoil and turned them around pretty quickly.
Absolutely not...or hopefully not anyway.
SeanLandeta : 12/12/2017 7:27 am : link
BB tree produces bad fruit. This is about as successful as that tree gets and he's mediocre at best with a ton of bad decisions sprinkled in there. I suspect mediocre is the height of what you'd get out of him. If between 6-10 and 9-7 is your goal then he's a fit. Pass...

Ownership making the QB decision? And the HC decision. Good grief, we are probably screwed.
He gets far too much credit for PSU
Banks : 12/12/2017 8:32 am : link
Besides Silas Redd and the kicker, they lost no one of any impact. They usually have 7-8 gimme games a year. In 2012, the schedule was even softer than usual and they only had to worry about OSU. Wisconsin was the other big school on the schedule, but they were in a down year. At the very worst they should have won 8 games. The next year they were worse.
The investment made in Hoyer Mallett and Savage
pjcas18 : 12/12/2017 8:50 am : link
was equivalent to backup QB/UDFA money. Hard to fault anyone for those types of moves.

If you crush him for those three, why not give him credit for Watson who looked like before his injury to be a better Cam Newton.
from what I have seen....
BillKo : 12/12/2017 8:51 am : link
on Hard Knocks, I don't like his style. That's just me.......

And while he hasn't had a QB (until now) in Houston, I guess you can see he's done a decent job in Hoston.

I would be surprised if they release him.
could work. and he won't have personnel final decision here re QB
Victor in CT : 12/12/2017 8:57 am : link
I like that he's a hard ass too. They need an ass kicking in that locker room
