Why does Spags deprecate his intelligence? In one interview

plato : 12/11/2017 11:35 pm
he talked about his "small brain" and in another he said he wasn't "the smartest " , etc. I understand self deprecation, but if he's trying to get the HC position that's not the way to do it. I think he already knows he's not the HC, and I doubt regardless of his past and record of interim HC he's gone and knows it.

Actually I personally think his self evaluation is correct and will be glad to see him go. But the fact that he's talking about is strange, or sad.
I saw this too
OdellBeckhamJr : 12/12/2017 12:04 am : link
I think he knows his place as interim HC and wants the media to go easy on him.
He seems like a fairly humble guy for a coach
Ten Ton Hammer : 12/12/2017 12:08 am : link
so it's not totally surprising. If you're a harsh critic of yourself, getting knocked around in the media won't bother you.
Well
santacruzom : 12/12/2017 12:22 am : link
He's technically correct. The brain is small enough to fit in a decent sized glove box, and he's certainly not the world's smartest person.

I mean, the only guy who's say he's got the biggest brain and is the smartest is our current President.
Almost all coaches have small brains...
3r76jp : 12/12/2017 3:22 am : link
most can't tell you the recipe for making ice much less life skills, they just quote Gen. Patton or coach Lombardi. That's all that fits. By the way if you've got 30 minutes to spare, read the "Art of War" by Sun Tzu a coaches bible.
In defense of Spags ...
3r76jp : 12/12/2017 3:48 am : link
I believe a defense trying to protect a vast empty desert that our offense resembles is mentally, physically and spiritually demoralizing. Give this defense a small oasis to defend say like having OBJ being bac (a threat to score every time he touches the ball) and they'll play better. Every opponent has to feel a guaranteed victory if they score over 20 points and can choose to pass or run on almost any give opportunity since they're basically not behind and time is on their side.

You deserve what you get for that post.
Self-awareness, maybe?

There are no geniuses in our business. We're all P.E. majors coaching P.E. majors.

Santacruz: I think the widely-misquoted boast was "I have a very good brain", not the "biggest" or "smartest". If you're going to derail a thread with a political post, you might as well get it right.

Chopper: Chill, my friend. It's Christmastime. We should not wish ill upon our fellow Giant fans.

Reese's counter to McAdoo's smartest man in the room statements. Takes some of the pressure off himself.
Yup

Trying to be the anti macadoo

Humble, honest and showing weakness.

It's a bit ham fisted

As far as I'm concerned
RetroJint : 12/12/2017 8:02 am : link
that comment marked the imminent end of his employment with the Giants. Small engram mapping . He knows only the one way. Self deprecation might be an asset for a stand-up comedian, but in the marketplace of goods and services, it serves as a disqualifier . Since he rose to the position of DC, then HC, and return to DC, most of his defenses have been terrible , with perhaps two being the worst of all-time. Bye !
what has he done to dispel the notion that he isn't overly

He's got a super bowl winning defensive gameplan in Canton, and in five years with the Giants he fielded three oustanding defenses. Let's not make the guy out to be some barely functioning retard.
Whatever the reasons,
Beezer : 12/12/2017 9:19 am : link
it's not a personality trait that's attractive to me as the next full-time, non-interim head coach for this team of ours. Hell, I'm not crazy about it for our DC.

Most of the examples I read seem to be saying, look man, I'm not pretending to have all the answers here. I'm gonna do the best I can in this role from here out, but, honestly, I'm adjusting too, and the situation is not ideal.

I dont know about the rest of you, but after 2 years of press conference transcripts from that smarmy fuck, Spags' remarks are a breath of fresh air.
Whatever Spags personality, the players seem to

like him and play hard for him. Which wasn’t the case during his failed head coaching stint.

I’ve always been a fan myself, but I agree with those who say it’s time for a full housecleaning and fresh start. Spags will find work quickly, I’m sure
It's not that uncommon.
an_idol_mind : 12/12/2017 9:36 am : link
There are a lot of people who enjoy self-deprecating humor.

I had to beat this mentality out of myself in my own career. I had a habit of frequently taking shots at myself and eventually realized it was costing me credibility with my coworkers.
He's just trying to portray that he is a humble, normal type guy
PatersonPlank : 12/12/2017 9:50 am : link
unlike the guy he took over for. I much prefer his style.
Does this mean
Doomster : 12/12/2017 12:52 pm : link
he is not the JPP of HC's?
He does seem a humble guy

And it doesn't hurt to be the anti-Mc at this point.
Thanks for your comments. Most coaches I have known are stubborn, they
plato : 12/12/2017 5:45 pm : link
stick to their way. But that's different than saying you're not smart. While I tend to agree with Fassel's PE comment, head coaches at top professional levels need to be imaginative, creative, knowledgeable, and good people persons. Those are very good. Any less than that you will rise to mediocrity but not beyond.

I fear Spags "smart" comments apply to his creativity.
He doesn't know any better...
Sarcastic Sam : 12/12/2017 6:16 pm : link
he's not that bright.
Because the guy called "The smartest in the room"

He's been this way for a long time...
Dan in the Springs : 12/12/2017 6:33 pm : link
his interviews are always open and honest with a lot of humility in them.

I think he's trying to get the press to back off him for immediate answers right now - it's not really to be anti-McAdoo as much as it is to say "give me time".

Anyway - that's my take on it.
