NFT: Winter Meetings Day 2

DaddyM89 : 12/12/2017 1:48 am
Pretty slow first day of meetings. Expecting things to heat up today. Have a feeling theres a blockbuster trade today. Machado anyone?

I didn't think Hal would let Cashman take on Stanton's salary, but here we are.
Been everything but a slow day for Mets
Shecky : 12/12/2017 8:45 am : link
As active as I can ever remember team being. Shocked several things didnt happen day one, and in back of everyones minds is it will lead to the dreaded laying the groundwork for future talks comment on way out. Sandy thought incredibly quiet winter so far would lead to an Uber aggressive first strike or three on day one. Disappointed, didnt happen. Today is key day of winter more than likely, if nothing happens today it simply proves unwilling to cross the value line, and nothing likely for a while

anything you can share Shecky? Hopefully someone more interesting than Ryan Goins.

during the season. SP depth has obviously been an issue, so unless you're getting good value for Harvey, why trade him? Right now there are 8 or 9 decent options within the org. They need to add more, not subtract. Given their budget whatever they add will likely be cheap backend flier types - but that's basically what Harvey is.
Wasn't
DanMetroMan : 12/12/2017 9:51 am : link
the point of bringing in Callaway (and Eiland) to try and make use of the pitching talent they had (and under performed). I'm not "against" trading Harvey if the deal is right but the fact they are apparently flat out shopping him really scares me. The AA/AAA SP depth is simply NOT there on paper. Marcos Molina and Corey Oswalt might not even be big league talents let alone guys who are in MLB rotations. I'm confident Flexen is a big leaguer but I suspect a 6th-7th inning arm.

Yup and if the budget really is scaling back from last year, won't they need some heavy longshots to pay off? We know what Harvey's upside is if he can get healthy, even if it's an extreme long shot.
Profar
DanMetroMan : 12/12/2017 9:59 am : link
is an especially bad target because he is out of options which means you either have to run him out there every day even if he sucks or having rotting away on the bench without an answer regarding if he's good or not. He has not been especially good in a very long time and had a major, major shoulder issue, one that has ended careers.

I mentioned it yesterday. I think it is a mistake to trade him now. They should wait and hope he rebounds and rebuilds his value then they can trade him for a better package. They must not think he can pitch at SunTrust park as he struggled mightily there but was his usual self on the road. I am looking forward to Luiz Gohara pitch. I am expecting him to break out this year and be their ace. Fried should win the #5 spot but he will be challenged by Soroka and Allard. I really hope Anthopoulos doesn't look to make a splash and trade several of their top pitching prospects for either Archer or Fulmer. Help is on the way as Toussaint and Kyle Wright could be ready for the bigs after the all-star break.

Interesting. Sherman is usually a good source. He was on the Stanton deal earlier than anyone. Makes sense. Move opens up a 40 man spot or two. Mitchell has good stuff, but he doesn't seem to have enough to really get a good shot with Yanks. And Headley is making 13 million this year in last year of his deal. But with Castro gone and 2B now open, having 3B also open may be a little much for the young guys to fill. Wonder if Frazier would be amenable to a 1-2 year deal to return if Headley is in fact moved. I would much rather have him over Headley. Just didn't think it was realistic...as we would have to move Headley and re-sign Frazier at a deal that was worth it for both him and Yanks.
Sherman exands...
BC Eagles94 : 12/12/2017 11:27 am : link
that we are getting back Jabari Blash. And that it seems like a salary dump. Attaching Mitchell to the deal so someone would take all of Headley's 13 million salary for next year.

And its all minor and kinda obvious.
Got a text from someone yesterday re Harvey rumors about a half hour before it broke. Knew when it was breaking, which is when I listed.
Bottom line with Harvey is yes, they are more open to trading him than I imagined they would be. Reason is to try to get teams excited about the NAME, and see if someone overlays.
Secondly, FO has been in extreme lockdown since year end re letting anything out. Extreme. So most rumors are now coming from outside the usual close sources. Which is why so may public rumors are wrong or way off, or even shot down immediately. And other things - well, those will never be known or heard about unfortunately.

The plan was to strike quick and hard. Make a lot of noise, but quietly, stealthy. Pull up, get the job done, and leave. Didnt happen. Plan B.

LOL, no surprise that Plan A never came into fruition... that doesn't sound like the Mets at all.

My guess is that "Plan B" includes more of the same bargain basement shopping and picking up other teams' leftovers.... the same type of bullshit every Mets fan knows and just LOVES! :)

Yup. Tigers are rebuilding. Mets will overpay for Kinsler and the Yankees will get Fulmer for B-listers lol
Well to be fair the only aggressive plan A they ever hit was Cuddyer
Eric on Li : 12/12/2017 12:02 pm : link
and Cespedes was basically plan Z. So you never know how these things will work out. The key is they need to be aggressive like they were when they got Cespedes and not fold up the tent just because they miss plan A. There are a lot of players out there who can help them this year. As much as we'd all be amazingly happy to land Yelich, Cain isn't far off and he's available for cash. Lots of good relievers and the ones who have already set the market didn't do so at insane prices.
Small clarification
Shecky : 12/12/2017 12:13 pm : link
Plan A was to come in, kick in the doors, grab the 2-3 priority pieces, and move on. That hasnt happened. Not suggesting the swing for the misses and now its strike on so they are tying to bunt. Just meant they stepped up to the plate looking to swing early in the count.

arcarsenal : 12/12/2017 12:22 pm : link
I definitely believe it - just wish they'd have surprised me with something like that. I'd love to see the Mets actually be aggressive and go get their guys.

Feels like they only want to get players on their own subpar terms and then when they don't get them, they settle for leftovers and guys that no one else wants.

I've been a negative Nancy this winter. I'm just super frustrated with this team right now. If all we have to show for these pitchers are 1 good playoff run, I'm going to be pretty miffed.

Really losing my patience with this org.

Same. A lot of chips on the board right now, many more than I remember many previous offseasons when it was such slim pickings Cuddyer and Granderson coming off missed seasons were relatively sensible options. It feels like now or never with this current group.

#Marlins pushing Ozuna, but complication is interested teams prefer Yelich: more control/higher upside and don't want to give up pieces for Ozuna when clubs believe -- regardless what Mia says -- that both will be traded this offseason.
Also it makes sense for Miami to trade both of them
Eric on Li : 12/12/2017 1:14 pm : link
neither one will have higher value any other time.

Yelich + Prado (as a $ dump). Make it happen Sandy.

they now say they will keep Harvey because Callaway and Eiland believe he can be fixed.

If Mickey Callaway and Dave Eiland waited until 12/12 to tell @metsgm that they wanted to keep Harvey and felt he could be "rehabbed" then they should both be sent packing today. Silly narrative. Keep him if the offers weren't good. Don't feed us BS.
