I'd be alright with Reed coming back. It's not shiny, and very Mets to lack creativity or any outside the box thinking, but it's an established reliever. It's...something.
The Mets wouldnt outbid the friggin Rockies for Shaw? Heyman saying he only got 3 mill a season. Embarrassing
He's getting a lot more than that. Twitter is mostly saying he got around 9 million a year. 3 years.
Even if he got that. That should be an easy beat for this team. They just dropped over 50 mill off the payroll
They really didnt. After arbitration, the payroll is around 122 million right now. They are about 28 million under where they were at the start of 2017.
are you including Wright? If so, that's pretty misleading since it's a fairly safe bet Wright's salary will be reimbursed 75%.
and over the last 10 years has been very good except for one season. I consider Reed and Shaw about equal.
The thing for me is, unless you are 1 of about 6 or 7 elite closers in baseball you tend to be a bit up and down or at least have a stinker once in a while. Ramos was actually much better in 2015/2016 then he was in 2017. I consider all these guys roughly the same with maybe McGee being the best of the bunch. Reed, Ramos, Shaw, Smith, ect are all about the same. There's rarely such a thing as an elite setup man (Miller excluded).
The Mets recycle their players. Shaw is significantly better than Reed...not close. If Reed gets 9mil/year then I know Alderson is clueless.
Just curious, but what is that based on (Shaw being better than Reed)? Shaw's ERA has been higher than Reed each of the past 2 years. He had less of a role in the Indians BP since they had Miller and Allen. He strikes out fewer guys. Similar workload. I haven't watched him much so this is a serious question.

It doesnt matter either way. People are citing 150 million last year and that included Wright (it ended up less with some insurance money back) so if you count Wright this year it's the same difference. Also, from what was released years ago it took 2 months before it kicked in and then it was 75% after so it's not as much as you outline. Also, Wright is going to give it another go. I doubt he is ever a starter again, I doubt he is even good, but even if he pinch hits here or there he could screw up the insurance money. You cant count on that IMO.

2017 Shaw 2.96 FIP 1.6 WAR. 2017 Reed 3.67 FIP 1 WAR most likely.
Also Reed's year suffered from Terry Collins trying to kill him on the mound in the first 6 weeks of the season.
Yeah, I like Reed a hair more too. His numbers are skewed a little by two really bad performances in Boston. He was pretty much lights out there aside from those two games too.
I did like Shaw though as a setup guy.
If Shaw got 9 AAV, McGee and Reed might actually get more. Crazy.
and that was at the end of the offseason off the scrap heap. He gave more to Blevins last year. Prices tend to go up year over year. All of these guys are signing for $8-10M. That's what Ramos is going to get in arbitration. That's just the market value. Darren O'Day makes $8M/year and we'd take him in a heartbeat because that's fair market value for solid late inning relievers.
I remember when we already had Darren O'Day... but we subjected him to being claimed by the Rangers just so that we could make room for 35 year old Nelson Figueroua to make a spot start in the place of Pelfrey (or something fucking stupid like that)

Yanks dodged a bullet. WOW!
Well, at his age it would have been great to sign him, given the cost, even if he needs TJ down the line. Heck, we drafted a bunch of kids in recent years who we knew needed TJ surgery.

Youre assuming they want to spend some of the money theyve saved.

They dont, Ive been saying that all offseason. This is bullshit

The Mets are a franchise trying to turn a profit and save money.

The Angels im sure knew about this, too
