Anyone listening to Francessa?

afann : 12/12/2017 3:40 pm
He is talking like it is a done deal that the Giants are hiring Gettleman. Now I know he is wrong A LOT but what do people here feel that way? I know Accorsi and Gettleman are tight but the Giants are going to interview other people, right?
I hope he's wrong....

would anyone be surprised if the Mara's do the exact same thing with the GM job than they did with the Head Coach. Remove one guy as a sacrifice/scapegoat and keep everyone else in place. Worked great with the coaching staff what can go wrong?

but were they even interviewed? The young GM/coach seems to be the new way to go in the NFL. So, Mara seeks a guy on social security with pants pulled up to his tits. I'm starting to believe the problem with this team begins and ends at the top.

AnskyJK : 12/12/2017 3:59 pm : link
What did Mike say? was not listening.

Would be as bad of a hire as I can imagine for many reasons. Of course the obvious is that we need real change- we have not made playoffs for 5 out of 6 years and bringing in a guy from same tree is not that.

More importantly, he was absolutely hated when he left Carolina. Look at what players had to say about him when he left. Agents and players did not want to work with.

His drafts were mixed at best.

His big FA signing Matt Khalil may be one of the worst contracts in football.

He's old school and does not embrace next age analytics like the best ones do.

Bobby Humphrey's Earpad : 12/12/2017 4:02 pm : link
He said he thought it would be Gettleman but his preference would be to get a younger guy in, as Gettleman is set in his ways at 66 after a long career.

On the coaching side, he would like the Giants to go after Shaw and that Jim Harbaugh doesn't fit the Giants mold.
What Bobby

Said. He was saying that it is almost certain the Giants were gong with Gettleman. He said he wasn’t sure he agrees with it but it looks like that is what the Giants are going to do.
I think the Giants will do their due diligence

on this hire and the Head Coach. Currently there's no rush, but if the Giants want to interview Execs on other teams in the playoffs, they may have to wait another month or more. Will their patience wear out? IMO, I think Gettlemen is the lead candidate due to the Giants knowledge of him and I think the other candidates will have to knock their socks off to have a shot.

"Something the fanbase needs to stop"

Like that really could happen. I think many have forgotten what organization this is. This is not the Browns or Jets or any other wanna be organization that stubs its toe anywhere it goes. Mara talked about the need for new ideas and the franchise being rudderless. That does not mean he won't hire a GM he is familiar with. Gettleman might be the different perspective he is seeking. And the things that got Gettleman fired in Carolina arguably play better in NY.

I highly doubt this organization is going to tear the entire structure down. Mara is looking to find the team's foundation. Find what makes the NY Giants the NY Football Giants. He will look for traditions he values, a commitment to the type of football the franchise wants to play, and a stead hand at the GM position. As for new voices and new ideas, the fanbase stands a greater chance of that happening with the new HC, than the new GM.

Patience. The scouts have to stay through the draft -- there isn't time to do all the draft prep from scratch. That's why the Bills fired their GM after the 2017 draft. It's counter-intuitive but that's how it works.

Whining. How about some consistency? Going back to 2009 we have gone to the playoffs twice. Yes, we did win the super bowl in 2011. So including this year we will have made the playoffs twice in 9 years. Green Bay is consistent, Pitt is consistent...why can’t we be? I don’t think it is too much to ask.

I guess Gettlemen is an okay choise
Breeze_94 : 12/12/2017 5:43 pm : link
but its not a long-term plan. There has to be a catch to this plan because Gettleman realistically has maybe 5 years and you don't hire a GM with the expectation that he won't be around long term.

I think it is clear (if they go the Gettleman) the Giants want to stay within the organization and basically groom Abrams/Ross for the GM position.

I will say the one thing about DG is he did a great job when he took over the Panthers. He cut the fat (big contract vets who were in decline) and helped get the team out of cap hell and shaped them into a SB contender in both 2013 and 2015.
Gettleman

The giants have a record of the recommendations he made while he was here. His drafts at Carolina were good. His super bowl team was a physical down hill team.He was highly criticized for letting Norman go but that looks like a good decision.

My guess is he was referring to Coughlin. People still seem to think Coughlin is the cause of the Jaguars success this season even though about 98% (actually it's probably even higher) of the contributing roster was there before Coughlin walked in the door.
He made good decisions in Caroline both in drafting and signing

veterans. And he was independent - which was the cause of his getting fired.

rocco8112 : 12/12/2017 6:15 pm : link
“Tom Coughlin made the point, big men allow you to compete,” Gettleman says. “And I’ve never forgotten that. He said it so concisely... This is a big man’s game.”

I have no idea how to rate GM candidates and that is the truth. But, I do hope the next GM realizes this team plays in the northeast and needs power on the o line, a sledgehammer at running back, a punishing defensive front (including linebackers) and a QB who can lead and get it deep for the big play.

It is time for the Giants to be a physical football team again.

People around here seem to think that Coughlin is the Jags GM, Head Coach and President all rolled into one. They also act like he’s been there a decade and built the team from the ground up, giving him all the credit for this season.
I don't get the auto negativity on Gettlemen either
edavisiii : 12/12/2017 6:24 pm : link
Everyone wants them to "blow it up!" but that could mean years of lousy football while we rebuild. To me, our drafts started sucking when Gettleman left. He would bring stability. The QB issue is a real tough one. If Darnold stays in and Rosen gets picked by the Browns the G-Men might not take a QB and we need someone who is a grade A talent evaluator to decide. Mayfield does not fit the giants profile, and I am hearing Jackson is better suited for WR. Just a thought, keep Eli, Gino and Davis, draft Barkley at #2 and with the 34# draft the best OL available. With the rest of the draft stick with OL, LB and get a DL who can bring pressure. Lost in this mess is the fact our overpaid Front 4 brings no pressure! If we could then we would have not gotten burnt for 2 long touchdowns this week.
BBI was pissed when he left for Carolina
larryflower37 : 12/12/2017 6:35 pm : link
Now it's a bad hire.
He was not a fit for Carolina because he held a hard line on what he considered bad contracts for old players.
Richardson wants to give away the farm to older players. Gettelman pulled them out of Cap hell

This.

They have displayed Browns/Jets-like qualities these last few weeks.

I'm cool with Gettleman as a stop-gap until Abrams takes over, if he is qualified. The issue I have is the tunnel vision exhibited by ownership in automatically hiring Ernie "friend of ours" Accorsi, who automatically steers the boat toward another "friend of ours" in Gettleman. If the Giants do their due diligence and consider more candidates, and ultimately select Gettleman, then cool. But the knee jerk hiring of EA leads me to believe otherwise.

Gettlemen for no other reason than he's been here before. It's also irrational to want someone just because they havene't been here before. This is a place to vent and offer opinions but informed opinions are more fun to read. Can someone who doesn't like the idea of a Gettlemen hire offer reasons, examples from his body of work, other than he worked in the organization and is friends with Accorsi? Can someone who favors Caserio or Wolf or Paton explain why other than they haven't been in the building before?

Keep in mind Gettelman signed Matt Khalil to a monster deal at LT. He's one of the worst contracts in the NFL- graded worse than Flowers at tackle.

If it wasnt for Cam's mobility it would be a much bigger story.

I doubt Gettleman would sign off on Barkley. He’s arguably been involved with 18 drafts and has taken two RBs in the first round — Ron Dayne and Christian McCafrey.

I have questions to whether a RB #1 is a wise choice but Sy 56 made the comment that the giants would be crazy to pass on Barkley. That might have changed since he has tailed off but I think Penn states OL has had a lot to do with it. He'd take a couple of runs by our backs and break longer runs possibly to the house. Gettleman has been good at evaluating DLs...we need pass rush.
