Clayton Kershaw has an opt out after this season. He will be 31 when 2019 starts. Prime time lefty power arm with 12-6 Lord Charles in Yankee Stadium might be worth keeping some cash on hand for.

those big pitching contracts to a guy who is 30/31 may work fine for the first 2-3 years but becomes an albatross for the last 4-6 years. Trade for the younger player who is far more cost controlled and let some other team overinvest in Kershaw.

Consider David Price as a comp, not only did he get hurt in the first year of that deal, but he's going to drag down the Red Sox payroll for years to come.

Don't make the same mistake and pay Kershaw's past performance.
