NFT: Holiday Whiskey Thread

UConn4523 : 12/13/2017 3:10 pm
we have one of these every few weeks or so and I feel like it usually inspires me to try something I haven't had before. So what better time than now with the holiday coming up.

What are you guys liking these days? I've most recently had Blanton's, Michter's Small Batch, Woodford Reserve, Angel's Envy and Willett.

Still need to try Four Roses Single Barrel and I'm very curious what the Michter's Sour Mash tastes like.

Scotch recommendations welcome as well. May splurge for some Dalmore 15...

The only time I tried 4-roses SB I hated it. I like all the others you mentioned. Another one in a < $30 range is Eagle Rare...I also like Belle Meade...

Really? I've heard good things.

Actually it was Eagle Rare that I had not Angels Envy which I still need to try.
Ive been drinking the Johnnie Walker a lot lately

Double Black, Green and Blue.

I like the Double Black.

Angels Envy, Blantons and Woodford Reserve
pjcas18 : 12/13/2017 3:49 pm : link
are my three favorite bourbons of those you have listed.

If I had to pick it might be Angels Envy #1. That's what I served last year for Christmas Eve and my two brother-in-laws and I drank the whole bottle.

Recently tried Woodford Reserve Rye and it was delicious.

I don't drink them with any rocks or mixed at all. Maybe a drop of water, but usually just neat.

4 Roses is good too, but not as good as those mentioned for my taste.
Johnnie Black always my go to. I also keep Dewars in the house
Victor in CT : 12/13/2017 3:50 pm : link
for people who like a lighter blend.

I keep Jim Beam and Woodford Reserve in the house for Bourbon drinkers or if I want a change of pace.

I tried a couple that I've never had before.
smshmth8690 : 12/13/2017 4:11 pm : link
First, Elmer T. Lee Single Barrel. It's allocated around here (NJ), so when I had it made available I was real anxious to try it. I didn't care for it too much, I will try it again with a rock in it, maybe it will mellow it a bit. I didn't find it very smooth.

Second, Virgil Kaine Electric Owl Sour Mash. Liked this one a lot. Aged in sherry barrels I believe. Might be harder to find than the Elmer T Lee.

Both bottles were in the $90 range, but to be honest with you, I would just as soon go with Blanton's, or a bottle of Woodford Double Oak.

funny you bring that up, I just had it last weekend when we went out to dinner at a steakhouse in Worcester. I hadn't tried it and wanted to but couldn't find it anywhere.

I liked it a lot, but I like Woodford so much I had no doubt I would.

If you see it, I recommend Woodford Reserve Four Wood too. I haven't seen it in a while though.

The distributor would most likely make a deal with their bigger volume accounts: Take 50 cases of this vodka and we'll set aside 6 bottles when the shipment comes in.

Smaller guys can't handle the inventory so if you have any bigger stores in your area, ask them and they may be able to give you a heads up
Evan Williams Single Barrel....

Do yourself a favor and try it. It’s not a pretentious bourbon. It’s modestly priced at about $30 a bottle and it’s excellent for drinking straight or in cocktails.

Breckinridge is another great Bourbon. Its more expensive at 50 bucks a bottle but worth it. It’s hard to believe they make bourbon in Colorado.

Widow Jane is also very good but is sometimes hard to find.

Four Roses and Woodford are overated IMHO

I’d recommend trying...

Craigelachie scotch. It’s 13 year old scotch. One more than 12, so it must be a little better.

Seriously a very nice Speyside for $50-&60.

My own preferences have been the older Bushmills (16 and, as a valued gift, the 21). But the raves have persuaded me to give Redbrest 12 a go. Have found where to get it for about $50.

Over Thanksgiving we had Johnny Walker tasting and I got to tell you I am not all that impressed. Like - at all.

Mac 12 is good, but I don’t think you can beat 15 for under 100.

Honestly for the price - glenfiddich 12 is my favorite all around scotch under 50.

Balvenie 12 double wood is fantastic.

I like 4 roses.

makers, Jameson, or Bushmills I’ll never turn down either.

I’ve had a few of them and none are worth the price. But I’m not a huge fan of blends in general so that could be it.
Can anyone describe the main taste difference
UConn4523 : 12/13/2017 7:00 pm : link
between a bourbon and a rye? I’ve had a few ryes but it’s been a while and never did a side by side taste against a bourbon.

I won a bet against a skins fan last year and he had to get me a bottle. Then another friend of mine got paid by someone he was doing some work for with a few bottles and he agreed to sell me one.

down here in VA and MD, the liquor stores get a small amount each year. Like a case or two. To make it fair for all their customers they hold a lottery. You should ask your local liquor store if they do the lottery or which stores around you might.

That's how it is here in NJ too, as I understand it. I know a guy who owns 2 small stores, not a chance. The local huge wine store with multiple outlets gets the Van Winkle. Two years ago I score a bottle of Van Winkle Family 13 year, and he's also the guy I got the Elmer T Lee from this year.

Chivas 12 sucks, but the 18 is terrific in an absolute sense and for the price.

Same is true about the Buchanan's 18. Probably better.

In single malt in similar prices, Oban 14 or Oban Little Bay. Both are smoky with practically no peat. I am not a peat fan.
