Second opinion for Justin Pugh prescribed rest and rehab, no surgery needed. But he cannot play with his back issue. Will miss final seven games of season heading into free agency.
Thank god I'm not going this week.

And he hasn't played a full 16-game schedule since his rookie season in 2013.

yep. no way I'd bring him back.

has a track record for injuries.....Only way Giants should sign him is on a one year show me deal with incentives.....but there will be some idiot GM out there(hope it isn't ours), that overpays....
Feel for the guy
ij_reilly : 12/14/2017 1:02 pm : link
What's his physical condition going to be when he's 50 years old? I bet not too good. His back must be really messed up by now.

Yeah, I know he gets paid for it, still it's a brutal game.
What a bargain that 5th year option was for us.
Diver_Down : 12/14/2017 1:06 pm : link
He was paid $1.1M/game. I advocated last year after he passed his physical that they should have released him so they did not have to pay the $8.8M salary. We certainly could have used that money to sign an OL that actually suits up on Sunday.
Hopefully hes someone elses problem next year

Mike in NY : 12/14/2017 1:16 pm : link
Our OL worked best with him at RT, but he cannot stay healthy. OL is not an easy position to deal with injuries because it is dependent on your entire OL making the same reads regarding the defense.
Pugh should have been tried at LT. He is quick enough and wouldn't

This may open him up to playing on one of those "prove it deals" that are becoming popular. I wouldn't write him off.
Drafting a OL in the first round...

is not guarantee for long-term success. He had a lot of promise, but can't stay on the field long enough to prove it...

That and his arms were so short that he was unable to absorb the impact with his arms before the defender was into his body.

Hopefully any negotiations go like this:

Justin Pugh (calling the Giants): Hello? Yes, I would be open to returning to play for you.

New GM: *Click*

Justin Pugh: Hello? Hello?
they will resign him
Bubba : 12/14/2017 1:30 pm : link
and he will have surgery in May and be back on IR. Its our MO.

I think that's the point, there ARE no guarantees when drafting!

+1

I'd see if he'd take a 3 year 20 mill dollar contract with incentives. Under market value with built in security. If he can get better, he can leave. But I wouldn't slam the door on him.

japanhead : 12/14/2017 1:38 pm : link
out of action every year since 2013, and counting this year, will have missed a combined 17 games of playing time over the course of his five career. moreover, he has missed increasing amounts of time as his career has progressed (5 games last year, 8 games this year, 2 apiece in 2014 and 15).

it would be foolish to bring him back as anything but a backup. his body clearly can't handle a full NFL season. he therefore cannot be counted on to start.

Man... it must suck for him...
Dan in the Springs : 12/14/2017 1:48 pm : link
he had to come into his contract year knowing that the big question mark about him was his durability. He mentioned earlier that his eyes were big when he saw what FA were getting last offseason. You know he fully intended to cash in.

Wonder how much this must suck for him - this back injury alone may have cost his family $8-10MM in cash easily.

While Pugh wasn't a world-beater, he proved his versatility by playing adequately at a number of positions. If he were healthy he'd be one of the top targets for the many OL starved franchises. Now he's going to have to try for a prove-it deal because nobody is going to give him a long-term deal.

I really would appreciate our GM bringing Pugh back on a 3 year deal and then moving him to LT. Bargain bin LT shopping...

out there that likes his versatility and feel, if he stays healthy, can be a good lineman. There will be some team that wants to believe that.

Takes only one team.............
I'd
AcidTest : 12/14/2017 2:29 pm : link
pass also, except maybe a one year low cost prove it deal. But I'm not even sure about that. I'd also pass on Richburg. The OL, like most of the rest of the team, needs an overhaul.
He possibly just backed into a one year....

'prove it' deal at a very reasonable sum.

Former Panthers and Giants OG Geoff Schwartz announced his retirement after nine seasons in the NFL.

Released by the Lions last August.....
A quality player, Schwartz's career likely would have gone much differently if he had been able to stay on the field, but he missed all of 2011 with a hip injury and played just 13 games in two seasons with the Giants.
Coach-killer.
Powerclean765 : 12/14/2017 3:47 pm : link
Good player when healthy, which is never, yet causes you to tie up resources and plan him into the starting line-up.

A prove-it deal with incentives - the larger problem isn't $$$. He's right back into the starting line-up resuming his "will he, won't he" routine, ruining the chemistry so vital to OL play. Asking them to have 3 excellent starting G's ready to play without affecting things up front is unrealistic.

Staying on the field and grinding is what O'Hara & the boys were imploring 2 years ago. 3 days into camp and 3 guys were standing on the sideline.

Pugh likes to compare himself to Zeilter - they are similar players when healthy - but Zeitler stays at that level. Pugh has a couple games a year there. Buyer beware, planning this guy into your starting 5.
Reese or whoever was really in charge of our drafting was unable to
plato : 12/14/2017 3:48 pm : link
Draft quality OL men at any position in the draft. Look at # 1's, 2's, 3's on the Giants OL who are terrible from centers outwards to tackles. Reese ruined this team for years by his lack of understanding of the OL. Hopefully new GM or whoever will be in charge of rebuilding has a George Young approach to team building.

And we'd still be mediocre, but probably marginally less so, and less in position to set the franchise in the right direction for the next decade plus. I say a very grateful THANK YOU to Pugh.

We needed to bottom out in order to get everything fixed. He helped accomplish that.

Me too. No worries, with a busy off-season, I'm sure we'll have plenty of opportunity to disagree.
Take it one day at a time....
edavisiii : 12/15/2017 3:25 am : link
On the plus side he gives you tremendous flexibility: A grade guard, B grade RT and he can play LT. Negative: Back Injuries are tough. Shawn Andrews comes to mind and Brandon Mosley. If someone makes and outrageous offer you have to let him walk. This is brings to mind my main complaint about reese, he always moved up, lost picks and then failed with his low to mid picks and that led to little depth.
Have we run out of space yet on Injured Reserve?
Jimmy Googs : 12/15/2017 6:31 am : link
Pugh has never been worthy of the pick. While flexible amongst the positions and arguably the best we have on that Oline he has negates it very well with his lack of availabilty.

hit the road if somewhere in the marketplace they don't discount his injuries...
