NFT: computer spam question

Reb8thVA : 12/14/2017 3:35 pm
Have you ever had this problem? You go to a website and maybe 5 seconds later the site is taken over by an announcement you won an Amazon or Walmart gift card. Its like a pop up add but different. Its not like where you just have to find the hidden X and close it up. There is no way to get rid of it without closing he window and if you go back to the site it pops up again. Moreover, its not just one site it happens to me at different places and times.

If you have encountered this how have you fixed it?

Clear your browser history. That should dispose of it. And stay off the offending site if possible.

1) Malwarebytes is a good idea for Windows users. Not sure why people have to delete the free version, you can just manually download the signatures and run it every couple of weeks (unless it's changed recently). Just don't select the "Trial Pro Version" when you install it.

2) Don't use IE/Edge. Use Google (with UOrigin or Adblock plus and SafeScript extension) or Firefox (with UOrigin or Adblock Plus and NoScript extensions). That should stop most of the nasty popups.

You could also try Opera or Brave...they have built in ad blocking. Don't forget to whitelist sites you want to support.

3) Don't forget to keep your anti-virus up to date, and run weekly scans. You can automate those, to an extent.

Window is a PIA right now...a ton of maintenance, telemetry is scary, and updates are a mess. I use Linux (I just support Windows users!), and while you still have to be alert (Phishing can happen to anyone, Macs included), you don't have all these chores to do with other operating systems.

The free version doesn't expire. The free trial of the premium version does. I simply have the free version, which does update regularly and is quite useful.

real time protection bothers me. It seems like it tries to step on my Internet Security software.
