An odd theory on McAdoo

Poktown Pete : 12/14/2017 8:45 pm
Not sure this one's been discussed before.

A friend of mine (who's not a Giant fan) said to me the other day that he thought Ben really wanted to get fired. He never really wanted to be a head coach and once things had spiraled out of control for him, he wanted out. He knew benching Eli would do the trick.

If that's what he wanted, he surely pushed the right button. I haven't decided if I buy this or not, but it's an interesting theory.
That's nuts
mrvax : 12/14/2017 8:48 pm : link
Of course BM wanted to be a head coach. He's got quite the ego and feels his offensive game plans were solid. He actually believes Eli was why his offense blows.

What prevented him from saying, no I want a few more years of seasoning in a comfortable position in GB?
He's not the first person to be over whelmed by the demands of the job.
It's not that he didn't want to be a head coach
Matt in SGS : 12/14/2017 8:59 pm : link
it's that he wasn't head coaching material. He really believed that Geno Smith gave him a better chance to win than Eli. He was hinting this in the offseason as well. My guess is come the Raiders game, Mara gave him the green light to see other QBs, but told him that he wants to win and that will factor in his decision on McAdoo/Reese. So McAdoo, who never looked like a guy who had the ability to read the room, put his career in the hands of Geno by embarassing Eli. The blowback cost him his job.

Benching Eli was his parting shot at the Giants

Remember Jim Zorn coaching the Redskins? He knew he was going to get fired. In his last couple of games as coach, he called some of the worst plays ever, including a two point conversion against us that was beyond ugly. There was a theory that that was his parting shot at Snyder.

I think benching Eli was McAdoo's eff you to the Giants since he knew he was getting canned anyway.
My odd theory about McAdoo
Sarcastic Sam : 12/14/2017 9:22 pm : link
is that he was an alien sent from a distant planet to learn the ways of humanity. Through a series of hilarious misunderstandings, he ended up Wisconsin as the offensive coordinator of the Packers of Green Bay.
Please tell your friend he is dumb ass.

McAdoo tanked his head coaching gig to get out of the job? Seriously? He made himself the punchline of a joke to get out of the job?

Zero doubt in my mind, this is what happened.
None of us would turn down being the Giants Head Coach, including Ben
Poktown Pete : 12/14/2017 10:14 pm : link
but once a season turned hideously sour, players were lost for the season, others revolted, your lack of coaching skills were exposed, media crucified you, fans screamed for your blood, perhaps then a head coach might ask himself, do I and my family really need this?

I think that's the crux of what my friend said.

He was never the offensive coordinator in Green Bay. He was just the QB coach.

lol and that has been discussed here several years ago with many scratching their heads around the inexperience, with the usual suspects that johnny on the spot use that "curse" here called "grooming". He is being groomed for the position. When you hear that shit with the Giants it means nothing but trouble and cronyism.

Right. Because that is what was wrong with my odd theory.

He should have started trying for near 80 yard field goals, lane kiffin style.

I don't know that he wanted to get fired,
Section331 : 12/15/2017 10:45 am : link
but he clearly saw the handwriting on the wall. I think his benching Eli was a desperation move to try and show management that his scheme was compromised by a QB who didn't fit it. Nothing more than that. The problem was that he hoped Geno Smith would be the guy to show it.
Anyone who ties their career to Geno deserves to be fired
PatersonPlank : 12/15/2017 10:57 am : link
You have to immediately question his sanity, even Fat Rex didn't do that.
It seemed that he couldn't change this year
TheEvilLurker : 12/15/2017 10:57 am : link
fast enough. It's too bad he didn't expand on last year (fix the lines), and instead just stood pat.

When he had to change, it was way too late.

Geno was his last shot, and when he performed the same as Eli, that was all she wrote for his job.

He was really missing the people skills that help when things go wrong. He seemed tone-deaf quite a few times this year.

That Green Bay sent him to us to destroy us from the inside out for 2007 and 2011 playoff losses. It was a Trojan horse damn it.

I agree with this theory, and actually believe it was a collaboration between the Packers and the Eagles. Remember the Eagles were the ones who floated the rumor that they wanted to sign McAdoo themselves to force our hand (ridiculous in hindsight).

That's why I don't believe that narrative.

I don't believe he thought Geno was going to save his job. Possibly he thought that following JR and Maras instructions to get Webb playing time (in order after geno) would show he was a good company man and give him a sliver of hope but Eli threw a wrench into that plan.

But what do I know
Starting Geno
Thegratefulhead : 12/15/2017 12:14 pm : link
Was a gamble he had to take. The offense had looked terrible for 2 years. He knew he was going to get fired after the season. If Geno somehow played well and won, he could have blame the ineptitude on Eli and possibly save his job. I think he took what Mara told him, ran with it and took a calculated risk to save his job. It failed, I am sure he knew it was long shot but Webb wasn't ready yet, he failed there too.

Agreed. If Geno had dropped 35 points on the raiders and blew their doors off I’m certain he survives at the very least the season and then the Giants have a case to turn the page on Eli. If he was playing poker he was pushing all his chips in with a pair of tens and hoping nobody else at the table could beat it. The raiders had a pair of jacks and busted BM out of the game.
The irony is that McAdoo was brought in to change the offense
GeofromNJ : 12/16/2017 5:06 pm : link
from the 5 step drop of Gilbride to the 3 step drop of the WC because the Giants O Line was not able to hold long enough. Yet when he got here, McAdoo became convinced that Eli was not mobile enough to play the WC and he wanted to play Smith who is more mobile and has a quicker release, but is also a turnover machine. The 2017 season gave Mac the opportunity to make the change. If Smith hadn't fumbled twice the Giants would have won and fan uproar may have been survivable and Geno would still be playing and Mac would still be coaching. But Smith did fumble, the Giants did lose, and with three remaining home games, no way was Mara going to run the risk of an empty building. So -- out went McAdoo and down went Smith.

Now the issue is, does Spags have the onions to play Webb or do we have to wait for July to find out what we have in the kid from Cal.
Turnover machine??
