One year, $10M contract. Perfect deal for Yanks. Nice job by them holding their ground.
Excellent deal

That's a great value and price . Glad to have CC back for this season.

That's fantastic

CC still has the ability to be very tough on certain days and he's not expected to be the anchor of the staff. But most importantly, he's the father figure of the young kids coming up and they listen to him and admire him. He's hugely effective at mentoring the youngsters and a top notch man in the club house.

Great signing for the Yanks

If they had Gerrit Cole and have a staff of...

Tanaka
Severino
Gray
Cole
Sabbathia

With an excellent bullpen and our lineup, that's just awesome on paper!

But paper means nothing, gotta prove it on the field.

Go Yankees!
Very happy

Awesome news. Now you have 5 solid starters and a great competition at Scranton for guys like Chance Adams, Cessa and Justus Sheffield. If a starter goes down on the Yankee roster, bring up a starter from Scranton.

The Yankees are loaded and can afford to have Torres at 2nd and Andujar at 3rd. Low pressure as they start their Yankee careers and develop.

I would still like to see one more off season move. Get LH reliever Brad Hand from the Padres. He will cost 3 solid (but not very Top tier) prospects. Adding Hand gives the Yankees one of the best relief staffs every assembled by a major league team. Hand's salary will not be expensive and he is controllable several years. Chapman was solid in the playoffs, but had some ups and downs during the regular season. Hand would be a the perfect addition. Last year he pitched in the 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th. Very versatile and had 20 saves. Get it done Cash.
Great zero risk deal.

I agree. No need to make the Cole trade.

+2

Teams pretty set. I think our rotation is good to go now. Stud lefty reliever would be a great add, but likely costly. Also a vet backup/insurance policy for 2B and/or 3B, in case either Torres or Andujar struggle out of the gate (Torreyes is valuable, but another guy would help). Sounds like Toddfather can get more years/money than Yanks probably want to give him elsewhere, so hes likely gone unless he really gives hometown discount.

Could always upgrade backup catcher, but so can every other team - a good one is hard to find.

By all means take calls about Clint, and ship him off if we get a good deal. Otherwise get ready for spring training.

Or, watch Cashman pull off another fast one on some team
I still think ellsbury magically gets traded

+1. Hopefully they keep Red and use the time CC buys them to get Adams and Sheffield (or others) ready to move up. I hated the idea of depleting our blue chip prospects for someone like Cole.
I would not feel bad about going
Ace718 : 12/16/2017 2:39 pm : link
Into the season with the rotation consisting of Severino, Tanaka, Sabathia, Gray and Montgomery. Montgomery showed last year that he is ready to be in the majors. I wouldn't send out prospects like Frazier and Adams for a pitcher like Cole who has had just one good season. He'll also be a free agent in 2 years so that's not a lot of control for the team.

Agree. Why people want to give away Frazier for Cole is puzzling. Guy is a 5th starter at best. W the lineup and bull pen they have makes
No sense

Agree with many of my fellow Yankee fans who posted on the thread.
Great deal for the Yanks
GiantJake : 12/16/2017 2:59 pm : link
Severino, Tanaka, Gray, CC & Montgomery is a good start. Chad Green will also be looked at as a starter. The Yanks could still make a deal for a starter, but now they don't have to make a deal. They will have a nice group of young arms to compete in camp. Adams, Sheffield, Cessa, German, Acevedo could all wind up at AAA Scranton to compete and wait for their shot in the bigs. Albert Abreu and Dillon Tate shouldn't be far behind in AA.
Great news
illmatic : 12/16/2017 3:08 pm : link
That's a fair contract for both sides. Just gotta hope his body can hold up and last one more season.

But I disagree with those who think we're set with the rotation and that they shouldn't make a trade now. All it takes is for Severino or Tanaka to go down and suddenly the rotation doesn't look too hot. And while it's nice that Montgomery has youth on his side, he didn't exactly light the world on fire last season. I hope he takes the next step forward but I don't quite trust him 100% yet. Getting a cost controlled pitcher like Cole would still be great and when injuries happen, which they always do, Montgomery would be a great option at that point and the team shouldn't fall off too much. But that's just my point of view. Not to mention CC thought about retirement in the middle of the season this past year because he was in so much pain at one point. At his age and with his body type, you're basically crossing your fingers and hoping he can stay healthy and repeat his performance from last year. This team can absolutely use more pitching depth.

Gerritt Cole is a 5th starter at best? The stuff you read on here sometimes just makes your head spin. I'm not really keen on trading for him but that's just a crazy statement.

Happy to have CC back. His leadership will be crucial in addition to what he can still do on the mound.
I'm happy to have CC back, but I'd still like to land Fullmer...
yatqb : 12/16/2017 4:48 pm : link
and far more than Cole. I wouldn't mind them going to a 6 man rotation this year.

I'm hoping that they can trade Ellsbury, land Fullmer and a third baseman, and still get under the cap somehow.

Is that being greedy?

section125 : 12/16/2017 5:08 pm : link
Montgomery is the real deal. He'll only get better. Best rookie pitcher last year. Solid #4, #5 pitcher. Five true pitches. Healthy and his innings will go up this year. Right now, I actually feel more comfortable with him over Gray and I know Gray is a #2.
We still need a 6th SP - IMHO
mavric : 12/16/2017 5:24 pm : link
By the end of May, at least one pitcher will be hurt or having struggles - happens every stinking year. If we don't have a spare, we'll be shopping and overpaying to get a starter into the game.

The Yanks are poised right now for a serious run at a WS championship. As good as Adams, Sheffield, Abreu, etc., are...the Yanks will want an experienced starter to step in rather than experiment with a kid who might flop and lose confidence in himself.

I would bet a hundred dollar bill that before the season starts, Cole, Fulmer, Duffy or Corbin will don pinstripes. I also bet that Cash will not throw the cream of the crop prospects at them to pull it off. I do think that Frazier will end up being traded since the signing of Stanton and the emergence of Florial makes it so there's no room for him and he's not going to be a bench player. Frazier is worth far too much to sit in the minors and there's really no room for him on the big club unless (God forbid) Judge or Stanton get hurt.

Pirates have wanted Gleyber Torres in a Gerrit Cole deal. Cant see yanks giving GT up. Frazier a more likely centerpiece, but would need to be more than 1 for 1. Perhaps andujar or Adams could be 2nd piece. Still negotiating.

Frazier and Andujar or Adams for Cole? ummmmm no.

BigBlueShock : 12/16/2017 8:46 pm : link
Thats how negotiations work. Ask for an unreasonable return so that the return that youd ultimately accept doesnt look so bad for the other team.
Perfect contract
RetroJint : 12/16/2017 8:50 pm : link
Now pull the horns in . Don't give Frazier a multi-year deal. His career is in irreversible decline and what you saw last post-season were the fading embers.

I want to see those guys playing but its a stretch to count on both. Would like to add another guy to the mix. I want Profar for a super utility role and to compete for 2b amd 3b jods.

Switch hits played 3rd, ss,2b,1b and lf

the sticking point in the Cole talks has been that the Pirates want Gleyber Torres. Apparently, the sides are still talking.
MLB Trade Rumors - ( New Window )
My concerns in a nutshell
Bill2 : 12/17/2017 8:46 am : link
"It was the second time Cole has topped the 200-inning mark in his young career, as he bounced back nicely from an injury-shortened 2016 season.

One worrisome number, however, was a big spike in home runs allowed, as Coles 1.4 HR/9 rate was more than double his 0.6 career mark prior to last season.

He was hardly the only pitcher to run into trouble with the long ball in 2017, though it is a bit of a troubling statistic if Cole is moving from pitcher-friendly PNC Park to a hitters paradise like Yankee Stadium"

I get there "could be" an upside. I sure get there was actual downside.

And I get that there could be limitations to Frazier and or an Adams that make such a trade worth it. A good trade has risks and rewards for all involved. They cant all be fleece jobs that Cashman wins easily
