NFT: MLB: Dodgers Braves Big-Ish trade

pjcas18 : 12/16/2017 4:56 pm
I guess the Dodgers shed some salary, and the Braves open a spot for Acuna, not sure why they do this trade though. Either side.

Adrian Gonzalez was apparently DFA'd, I know he's old, and oft-injured, but he's someone I'd be more interested in that Moreland or Lind even as a negative fWAR player on a cheap deal if he doesn't retire.

Quote:
The Atlanta Braves traded outfielder Matt Kemp to the Los Angeles Dodgers for Adrian Gonzalez, Brandon McCarthy, Scott Kazmir and Charlie Culberson, the teams announced Saturday.

The Braves, who also received cash considerations in the deal, immediately designated Gonzalez for assignment.

After sitting on the sideline during the recent winter meetings, the Dodgers moved quickly to dump nearly $50 million in salary committed to Gonzalez, Kazmir and McCarthy for 2018. Kemp is owed about $43 million over the next two seasons.

Kemp will be bought out

as well
The Dodgers will get under...

The luxury tax threshold for 2018, since Kemp’s salary/contract has two years left. Let’s them pay a 20% on the amount over the 197mm instead of 50%. Let’s them either extend Kershaw, and also be players in the FA class next year.
Kemp will go to AL

Where he can DH
Yeah, speculation
pjcas18 : 12/16/2017 5:00 pm : link
is it gets them in the game for Harper, should he make it to FA.
Yea I would take a look at AGonz
Stu11 : 12/16/2017 5:23 pm : link
He could be a good veteran lefty DH/bench bat.
Apparently the Dodgers asked the Marlins to wait

For this to be done so they could get Stanton. Jeter wouldn't wait.

Thank you again Derek.
Wow

Great move for the Braves as they were rumored to be dumping Kemp before the season if they couldn't trade him. I expected them to have to eat most of his salary in a trade to an AL team.

McCarthy will battle Max Fried for the 5th spot in the rotation while McCarthy will likely end up in the pen. McCarthy had a higher WAR than any Braves SP last season. Kazmir is a wildcard if he is healthy which is a big IF. The biggest part of this trade is that it opens up a spot for Ronald Acuna in RF.
GOnzalez

Is lefty and went on vacation vs joining his teammates during the playoffs because h was inactive. Pass.
The Braves are clearing money for the big 2019 FA Market
Jay on the Island : 12/16/2017 7:15 pm : link
They have between $80-90 million available to spend now that they rid themselves of Kemp's next season. They decided to take the hit this year in what should be the final season of the rebuild. McCarthy will be a much needed veteran presence for Gohara, Newcomb, and Fried. Then if he pitches well he could be traded at the deadline.
Good move for both teams

LA dumps veteran player/ player surplus to play the kids.
Braves get $$ ...veterans to show they will still try to win post-debacle and while their farm player needs a year or 2 to get kids ML ready.
Gonzalez is TCs injury comment when he took over as HC.

The Braves are close. Gohara, Newcomb, and Fried will likely open the season in the rotation. Then Mike Soroka and Kolby Allard will be in AAA and will likely be the first two called up due to injury/poor performance. Ronald Acuna will almost certainly begin the season in Atlanta now. They will be in on Machado/Donaldson at 3B next off-season.
Dodgers looking for next year FA market
floridagiantsfan : 12/16/2017 8:16 pm : link
Getting below 197MM is critical for this team. Kershaw has opt out after this season plus Harper and Macado could hit the FA market. They did this to be players next year. Also expect them to trade Kemp to AL team to DH which would create even better $ flexibility.

I think this is win win for both teams

They will most likely release Kemp. The Braves were trying to give him away for months and couldn't find any takers. They had to absorb 50 million of payroll today just to get rid of him.

All of the new contracts the braves took on expire this coming season too, whereas Kemp had 2 more years. So this opens up money for the Braves next year's off season too.
And i see

Once again next offseason, the Mets will say they are trying... but failed due to the high contracts
Demonstrates the Lunacy of Many Big Ticket Contracts
varco : 12/17/2017 7:21 am : link
I had been wondering how the Dodgers were going to purge themselves of some non-productive, big ticket contracts. I believe it is sheer lunacy to offer enormous contracts covering players into their mid-to-upper thirties, let alone early forties (ARod, for example). If you look at the truly productive players on most teams, such as the Yankees, Red Sox and Dodgers, they are not the mega-buck salaried guys but rather those on the lower end of the salary scale....Judge, Sanchez, Bird, Bellinger, Seager, Benintendi, Betts, etc. Points out that Teams which lock up their young players into age 32 or so are generally better off. Multi year deals after that age become an albatross. Productive farm systems, which deliver MLB ready, comparatively lower paid and controllable players consistently are key. A big free agent splash or two then can round out the home grown core.
