NFT: Shingles really sucks (in my eye). Get the new vaccine.

manh george : 12/16/2017 6:33 pm
Shingles is nature's way of telling you that you might feel and look young, but you aren't. Getting ready for 70 next year, sure enough, I got it in my eye despite having the old, less effective vaccine about 6 years ago.

5 weeks now, finally off the Prednisone which was making me crazy even by my standards. I expect to get full use of the eye in about 2-3 months. 13 doctor's visits, an MRI and a follow-up MRA so far. My version was unusual--three recorded examples of it. The strange part (and good news) was that 2 of the 3 nerves it hit were not pain receptive.

Nevertheless, long, strong doses of Prednisone (I now know) make me paranoid and simulate bipolar issues. And the withdrawal from it gave me pain elsewhere--arms, legs, back.

Anyway, there is now a much more effective vaccine that was just approved. It has a day's worth of side effects. Nevertheless, if you are over 50 or have a compromised immune system, such as with diabetes, and if you ever had chicken pox, you need to get the new vaccine when you can find it. NY Times article attached.

Hey Del.

Getting better, slowly.

Dinner some time? Do you have my new e-mail? I don't think Bill2 does, if you have, can you send it to him, or send me his?

Thanks.
Sorry to hear about your pain
bob_in_ec : 12/16/2017 9:05 pm : link
I got the vaccine a couple of years ago. Its supposed to be more effective. As we get older there's a lot of nasty stuff that we are more likely to get. Hang in there.
Yuck.
A-Train : 12/16/2017 9:33 pm : link
Hopefully you are back to normal soon.
Never had chicken pox, or measles, mumps, etc... Wouldn't enjoy it now at all. But no chance of shingles! I think...

You can get shingles on your EYE?
Greg, yeah.
manh george : 12/16/2017 10:23 pm : link
Not that uncommon a place to get it. Shingles is herpes zoster, which starts as chicken pox and then goes underground. If it wakes up, it seeks a pain sensitive nerve ending, including eye nerves. I actually got sorta lucky in that only one of the three nerves it hit was a pain nerve. Which confused the sh!t out of eight different doctors, but left me in much less pain than usual.
Sorry to hear
Rick5 : 12/16/2017 11:28 pm : link
about this. I imagine the prednisone was rough. I took it a few years ago and couldn't sleep for more than an hour a night while taking it.
Sorry to hear

deegee1 : 12/17/2017 7:59 am : link
i also got shingles across eye a couple of years back... 2 visits to the emergency room.. Morphine and glucose... visits to regular doc and eye doc... Head buried in the pillow for over a week.. many weeks after that for it to go away. The worst... The eye doc said that by getting shingles that it's serves as a vaccine... so I haven't gotten the new vaccine... I know what your going through and i feel for you... It does go away eventually..
Damn manh

sorry to hear that. Sounds like the worst is over. Appreciate the PSA.
sounds painful
pjcas18 : 12/17/2017 8:35 am : link
a few years ago we went on vacation with another family my friend (the dad in the other family) had severe pain in his head and what looked like a worm or small snake protruding from part of his skull (side of his head).

turned out it was shingles. looked like that snake was going to break through the skin and crawl out like in a horror movie.

I guess the eye is worse than that, but he was in a lot of pain regardless.

get well.
So sorry you are going through this painful ordeal
Steve in South Jersey : 12/17/2017 10:42 am : link
it must be agony.

Thanks for the information on the new vaccine. I will check with my doctor.
My luckiest part...
manh george : 12/18/2017 1:35 am : link
if you can call it luck, is that my pain really wasn't that bad, because only one of the three nerves involved was a sensory nerve--usually it mostly hits sensory nerves, which is where the pain comes from. (My friends all observed that I don't do anything the way "normal" people do--pure unicorn.) Everyone else I know of who had this in any part of the body had more pain.

The worst is definitely over. Pain nearly gone, off the steroids, but the eye opens poorly and I will have to tape over my right eyeglass lens until I stop seeing double in a couple of months. The worst part for me after about 10 days was the Prednisone. And sleeping poorly, partly from the Prednisone.

By the way, one of the things that helped with the pain (without doctor's recommendation, but placed very carefully) was a TENS machine. I kept the pads will below the eye, but it helped a lot. Wore it for a couple of hours a day for three weeks.

To the well-wishers--thanks.
Get better MG

says that they don't have the new vaccine (Zostavax) yet and will not have it for a couple more months. Has anyone found it available?
I am hearing that...
manh george : 12/18/2017 12:00 pm : link
it isn't generally available yet. Early next year some time.
shingles sucks, but it's more of a stress thing than an age thing. I
Victor in CT : 12/18/2017 2:20 pm : link
had it when I was 33. From September 25 of 1999 to year end I bought a house after a year of house hunting with 2 toddlers in tow, changed jobs, moved in and scambled to decorate the house not to disappoint my then almost 3 yr old daughter.

Had it right in the middle of my forehead too. And passed it to my 1yr son as chicken pox.

Old is being forgetful. I was 35. :-)
I wasn't under any significant stress when it hit...
manh george : 12/18/2017 5:07 pm : link
and these strange people called "experts" say that age is a key factor, but yes, that stress can probably trigger it, especially in people below the typical target age.

Quote:
Shingles can occur in people of any age, but it usually affects older adults. About 1 in 3 people in the United States gets shingles at some point during their lifetime

Quote:
Some researchers think that a weakened immune system can reactivate the varicella-zoster virus. Since stress affects the immune system, many researchers believe that stress could be a trigger for shingles.
(Note: could)

I have had an immune problem for most of my life: 5-9 sinus infections a year for 40+ years, and I am diabetic and almost 70. So, no, I don't think this was about stress. But I could be wrong. So could you.

Just approved improved vaccine for shingles
xman : 12/18/2017 11:19 pm : link
Shingrix by Glaxo for the over 50 crowd. Supposedly 90% effective in PREVENTING reactivation of the chickenpox virus . Merck's Zostavax was 50% effective

Just out of curiosity, how did you find out that you had shingles of the eye ? How did it start ?

I'm having pain and blurred vision in my right eye that my ophthalmologist hasn't figured out. My younger brother ( 57 yr old ) just got over shingles. I also had a nasty case of the chicken pox when I was a kid so maybe I'm a little paranoid.
