Baker Mayfield to the Jets

TheGhostofBlueGuy : 12/17/2017 8:57 am
For starters, I am an unapologetic Baker Mayfield fan. Everyone talks about how Big 10 teams play no defense and that he is under-sized and the system is favorable and blah, blah, blah.

The thing I look for in a quarterback his pocket presence and accuracy. If you watch Mayfield's games this year, watch how many times he goes through his progressions before he even thinks about taking off. He is not a running quarterback. He uses his legs when he has to, but he is not an RG3 type quarterback. Moreover, his accuracy is something you cannot teach. He reminds me very much of Aaron Rodgers with his touch on the football on all kinds of throws. He throws a beautiful swing pass. He knows how to put touch on the ball to get it over the linebackers. His game is ideally suited for the NFL because the NFL so closely resembles the college game more so today than any other time that I can remember.

That said, the Jets need to put asses in seats. The second coming of Joe Willie will do exactly that. He is a polarizing figure that will attract attention and, of course, some negativity. But that kid will win football games and has a fire that is undeniable. Jet fans should be all over Mayfield as they could potentially trade back and pick up a pick or two and still not lose out on him. My only question on him is can he win in cold weather.

I am on this kids bandwagon in a big way and hope that he proves his doubters wrong. That is all he is done his entire career. How do you think it shakes out for him long-term in the NFL?

And yes, I would take him on the Giants despite the off-field issues.

well he plays in the big 12....but i agree for the most part with your post. his maturity issues are a big deal, i think he can fix those concerns during interviews. The kid can win, no doubt. to be honest, i really like his skillset. him or darnold i would be perfectly happy with.
Accuracy is big

BUt so is the ability to recognize coverages, and the desire to win first everything else in life second. Will he put in Eli and Peyton like Work on a daily basis or does he want to be something else and have fun at clubs and such?

I concur, Bleed. I think it's important that a player such as Mayfield has such a chip on his shoulder. Brady had that same chip on his shoulder when he got drafted. When Brady was at Michigan, he was always competing for a job that he felt was rightfully his. It pushed him. It motivated him. I think Mayfield will have that same kind of drive. And, oh by the way, take a look at his stats. That's 70% + completion rate is not a fluke.

Yes, I agree that is a concern. But this comparison to Manziel is a false media narrative that is pushed without much analysis. Manziel won games in a way that didn't translate to the NFL. It didn't hurt that he had Mike Evans and Jake Matthews either. When I look at both of them, that comparison just doesn't stand up.

Having a chip on his shoulder ??? Have they seen how cocky Rogers and Brady are?

Haha. So true. But according to the media, Rodgers and Brady are competitors so, you know.
I don't see the Rodgers & Brady comparison
Powerclean765 : 12/17/2017 9:22 am : link
but I don't see Manziel either.

I think he's freakishly similar to Russell Wilson. And I agree with his ball placement, it's ridiculous, especially under pressure. He'll stand in and deliver a ball that almost doesn't make sense.

But, but, but he doesn't fit the prototype. Ridiculous to me that a quarterback has to be a certain height. Flutie, Brees and Wilson have dispelled that notion.

The Rodgers comparison is in reference to his accuracy and touch on the ball. The Brady comparison is in reference to the fire in the belly. Not how either play the game. I should have been more clear about. Good point.

I am not sure how you think he is slipping to the Jets that far down let alone they trade back and get him from where they stand. If you told me the Giants do that than I could understand. Also the combines and all the workouts might change a lot of teams minds where he goes.

Fair point.
Mayfield

I agree with the positive sentiments expressed in this post about Mayfield. He is NOT just a running QB, and makes all of the throws. His size should not be a factor.. he is about 1/2 inch shorter than Phil Simms who was a SHORT QB.. but not too shabby. And Drew Brees is not shabby either. And Mayfield does not need a fortress OL to be able to execute. Of Course you need to improve your OL for ANY QB. But if a QB can function in a dirty pocket like Mayfield he will be even more effective in a clean one. I think that if the Jets get Mayfield and the Giants take Rosen ( who NEEDS A strong OL and does not have the the ability to escape the rush like Mayfield) the Jets will be in the playoffs and win the SB long before the Giants ever do again. I think the behavioral objections about Mayfield are nonsense. He is a fierce competitor like Brady. Most college students , and in particular the football players and Fraternity guys are IMMATURE and misbehave. That has nothing to do with winning, as long as the behavior is not connected to domestic violence or drug addiction.

Here, bere.
As the Giants season deteriorated
Mike from Ohio : 12/17/2017 10:12 am : link
I paid more attention to the college QBs, and I came away very impressed with Mayfield. He is not a system QB putting up stats against bad defenses. He does go through his progressions, he makes smart decisions, and he has excellent touch on the ball. Most importantly, he keeps his eyes downfield when he scrambles and he is willing to stand in the pocket until the last minute and take a hit to deliver the ball. He is not just chucking the ball down the field for a jump ball like Manziel used to.

I would not be unhappy at all if the Giants drafted him at whatever pick they wind up at. I think he is going to be a very good NFL QB. I like that he is fiery and plays with a chip. A good coach can channel that into a positive. We aren't going to find another Eli personality because he is unique, so we should not be looking for that. Just find a guy that has the skill set to succeed.
I love Baker but I don't see Rodgers when he throws it
est1986 : 12/17/2017 10:24 am : link
I see a little Brees in him and I am a fan of the "attitude/swag" Baker brings with him on the field, it sounds corny but I just like to see that coming from the QB position for a change.
They can have him
Rflairr : 12/17/2017 10:39 am : link
I’ve seen him in person, I doubt he’s 6’0 tall.
There was some show on ESPN about him
short lease : 12/17/2017 10:39 am : link
very recently. From that show I saw immaturity for sure but, I did not see anything that was very serious - just stupidity of youth.

I think he is a good player and if the Giants are looking to go QB this year and they took him - I could live with that.

I don't see Brady or Rodgers at all ... if anything Wilson (already mentioned) and maybe a little Phillip Rivers?
Mayfield
Bernie : 12/17/2017 11:05 am : link
if he were 2 inches taller, I think he would be at the top of the draft boards. Given the current state of the NFL, I believe a QB has to be able to make plays on the run. Until the practice rules change, the days of the pure pocket passer are gone. As a result, I think Mayfield has a great chance to be a franchise QB, as long as he stays healthy. As for the immaturity stuff, he is a college kid. How many people on this board did immature things in college?
He’s the best player
Josh in the City : 12/17/2017 11:41 am : link
In college football and he’ll be the best player in the nfl from this draft class. Kid’s a winner and has the passion and desire to be the best. He has insane accuracy and an NFL skill set...if he was 2 inches taller it wouldnt even be a debate who would be going #1 overall.

That he doesn't go #1 overall after everything plays out
My opinon, and its only my opinion, is I think he's more like Sanchez
PatersonPlank : 12/17/2017 12:16 pm : link
than anyone else. I don't see him as more than the 4th or 5th best QB in the draft, and believe he will be a back-up type guy. His size really bothers me.

This is a valid concern. Would anybody be surprised if he comes up at the combine 2 or 3 inches shorter than his listed height?

somehow, some way, the Jets acquired him already even though it's not possible. Weird.

I saw him listed as 5'10" .... if he was 6'5" he would easily be a top 3 pick (imho).
