Draft a QB or some other position ?

Archer : 1/5/2018 5:34 pm
In reading the various blogs , there appear to be 2 approaches to the draft
One is to draft for the future, a QB, the other is to draft for the present and trade down and /or draft the best player that can step in and play immediately

For purposes of this discussion let’s assume that the Giants do not believe that Webb is a franchise QB

Where do you stand ? Should the Giants draft the best available QB or should they either trade out of the second pick of draft the best player available at 2 ?
My stance from the beginning has been to take a QB at 2

If they take Barkley I fear that the Giants will waste his prime years looking for their next franchise QB. In 2011 we saw that a franchise QB can overcome a lot of issues on the roster. QB is the most important position on the team. It appears that Wentz is the real deal so the Giants need to find their guy or the Eagles will be perennial NFC east champs if Wentz stays healthy.
I can't agree that if the Giants entertain a trade offer . . . .

that it's not for the future. In fact, it could and should be the exact opposite. Depending upon how it plays out, the Giants could wind up with an ADDITIONAL 2 or 3 premium round picks that could be turned into potential quality OL, LB, RB's or DE's. But all are likely to have a learning curve to reach their full potential. So it IS about the future.
There seems to be a false assumption that just because . . . .

a QB is ranked among his peers in a given draft, that his potential is exactly the same as any other QB of the same ranking in previous drafts, but that's just not true. There are some good QB's with decent potential in this draft, but I don't see any sure things.
You always are drafting for the future

The idea is you should not be in the position to take a top QB often(unless your cleveland). And that the 2 guys this year are so close they coyld both be #1 picks so picking #2 this year is like having the #1. Its the once every 25-30 years kind of oppotunity. Even if Eli had played great its the only move besides trading up to #1.
It's very simple.

If you believe that one of the quarterbacks can be a franchise QB, you take him. If not, trade down to a team that wants a QB and pick BPA. NONE of the non-QBs are worth the #2 pick.
If we had a QB who wasn't 37, Barkley would DEFINITELY

be worthy of the 2nd pick.
The early rounds of thedraft

is all about the future. Generally you should be looking strictly BPA. If the Giants do not like any of the young guns, then pass. If they don't love a particular guy like Barkley or Chubb that much, consider trading down a bit and go BPA.

If you really must use the draft to plug holes, do it after round 3.
Future

The most important and difficult position to fill is the QB
You can have a great team but an ordinary QB and your chances of winning are significantly diminished

There are only a few examples of teams winning the Super Bowl with an ordinary QB

Therefore, if you are building for the future you would start with a QB
I am not sure

what to do this year.On one hand we have the chance to take the next franchise QB for a decade without selling the house, on the other hand we can trade down a few spots and fix some other holes.

At the end of the day with the highest pick since 30 or so years, yeah it's maybe the best to take a shot at one of the QB's.
It's complicated ....

If you draft a top-tier QB (like Houston did with David Carr), and you have a lousy O-line you destroy the young man, physically and mentally.

If you draft a good QB like Dak Prescott (Dallas), Wence (Philly), or Goff (Rams) - with a good line you're in good shape because you've got a good O-line, you're in good shape.

Bottom-line, you need a good foundation to take advantage of a talented QB.
Draft the QB

Get Oline in free agency and draft. See what ELi can do for this upcoming year while the QB sits back and learns.

The last time two quarterbacks were so close and both sure things was Peyton Manning and Ryan Leaf. San Diego gave up a whole lot to move up from #3 to #2 and got Leaf. How did that work out?

There are no sure things!!!!!

It is not just whether Davis Webb is QB of the Future, but rather do the Giants view any of the QB’s in this draft as a Franchise QB. If you see this class as the next Tim Couch-Donovan McNabb-Akili Smith-Daunte Culpepper-Cade McNown you don’t force it at #2 overall. Not to mention that this is not a team that is one stud player away from a Super Bowl run. We need talent at a lot of positions and I don’t want to see us ignore a much bigger upgrade because we get tunnel visioned on a specific position like we did in 2015

Unless you want to wait 4+ years for a QB to develop, get Barkley, keep building the line and if Webb's a bust trade up for a QB in a future draft.

Houston killed Carr with a VERY bad OL. Great point!!

Did Flowers get better in 2017? Yeah, he did. Did Jones & Fluker play well, and would a healthy Richburg be enough...especially with a FA or drafted tackle next year? Perhaps. I think the ROI appears much better... especially in the finite window Eli has before retirement. The Giants won't rebuild the entire OL like Dallas did. The paying fans wouldn't stand for it...
