NFT: Rangers @ Arizona

NYerInMA : 1/6/2018 8:29 pm
Anyone else watching this trainwreck? Shattenkirk takes a penalty for knocking the net off the moorings, then Duclair (of course) scores on the ensuing Arizona PP.
Rangers have too

many players not living up to their talent.

Got the ex-Ranger auto-goal out of the way early with Duclair and Stepan getting the assist as a bonus.

Never fails.

For those who want the Rangers to sell (I'm still in the middle) - who would you want them to be looking to deal?
Anyone over 30, particularly Grabner

I'd listen to offers for McDonagh, too. He just isn't the same player he was a few years ago.

C’mon. Get a grip. The team is a few points out of first place and they have s lot of young guys, who are going to continue to get better
I'm not necessarily advocating selling
Kyle in NY : 1/7/2018 12:17 am : link
But they've been playing poorly for a month now and have been carried by their goaltending. And the coach is helpless to do anything about it.

Buchnevich back to the 4th line after one period tonight. What a crock

I thought about that. It does sound like there's mutual interest in him signing a new deal here, though - I think he wants to stay and I think NYR want him back.

Problem is, will he take less than the AAV on this current deal? Because if not, it could get dicey - but he has to, otherwise it's not worth it.

He's still a good player - and contract values have risen a little since he signed this one, but he's going to be 34 by the time next season starts and he's just not point producing nearly enough.
How about

selling the fucking coach?

I'm glad I decided not to go to Vegas this weekend
MetsAreBack : 1/7/2018 11:03 am : link
Figured it would be a lot of fun with hotels still cheap, wild card football on, lots of good college bball and the Rangers on sunday night,... ending early enough to grab a red eye home.

But too much going on with work and I didn't want to spend the money either. Glad I made that decision - we look terrible, its the 2nd of a back to back against a rested Vegas team, and they were gifted a really good team by a ridiculous expansion draft. I'd be surprised if we kept tonight's game within 3 goals.

I wouldn’t do a full sell but I would see what someone would trade for Nash
Rangers
pjcas18 : 1/7/2018 11:24 am : link
are two players away IMO.

A Kreider replacement (Pacioretty?)
A top 4 D (harder to find. I would have said Nate Schmidt, but with LVG surprising everyone, doubt he's easily available, but maybe Letang if he's healthy pipe dream is Karlsson fall back maybe Codi Ceci if Sens have a fire sale.

You guys know the Rangers better than me, but from what I've read Grabner will be extended or traded by the deadline.

I'd keep Nash for the playoffs, too versatile, to have to replace top 6 forward minutes, and special teams unless they do get Pacioretty then Nash is a little more expendable since Patches can do it all and is younger than Nash.
I'm not giving up Chytil or Andersson for Patches
MetsAreBack : 1/7/2018 6:33 pm : link
That would be madness.

We are closer to sellers than buyers imo with Kreider out for months... but no decisions need to be made for 6-8 weeks
After that horrid start, I'm just grateful they have
baadbill : 1/7/2018 7:10 pm : link
a season and there is a reason to watch. I, for one, would like to see them dial down the mid-season trades and focus upon building a strong foundation through the draft.

IMO the mid-season moves over the past 15 years was a total disaster. Lundqvist gave the Rangers a leg up on winning a cup. Sather gambled it away.
I don't know if I would trade Chytil
pjcas18 : 1/7/2018 7:38 pm : link
for Pacioretty or not. The Canadiens right now are allegedly saying it would take a young prospect and a high pick.

High price, but it's early. That probably comes down if the Canadiens fall further out of playoff contention.

Pacioretty is a 29 year old, consistent 60+ point scorer who can play top line minutes and all special teams.

He's a team leader.

He's just got one year left after this on his contract though (at a decent price), so you'd be "going for it" if you do make that trade.

I probably would trade Chytil for him. Chytil may never become a consistent 60+ point scorer. In fact odds are against it.

I definitely don't think it would be madness, but when you consider salary implications and age of the players, it's definitely only a win now team that would do it.
I don't doubt he'll return a first rounder
MetsAreBack : 1/7/2018 8:44 pm : link
Or a high prospect ... but the rangers shouldn't be the ones reaching. They made a strategic decision to sacrifice near term for medium/longer term by making the Stepan trade after the expansion draft... stick to the plan.

If the penguins continue to sink out of playoff contention I could see the Caps pushing all their chips in by the way.
Rangers should wait on a Max P trade
dpinzow : 1/7/2018 8:57 pm : link
until Montreal falls further out of contention (and right now, they look lifeless). They could probably get him for a lot less. And he'd be a terrific addition should it happen
I agree with MAB..."stick to the plan" and trade for more youth and

Never would have imagined them being this good though. They certainly got a boost from the protection rules to allow them to at least be competitive. But this kind of success, never saw that coming

They probably would have lost if they did, considering how bad they played
The incredible part
MetsAreBack : 1/7/2018 9:52 pm : link
Is if the rumors of AV's firing were true... buchnevich is a huge reason he's still here. He was on fire in November.

He just won't let young kids take chances and make mistakes. If you're Marc Staal or Dan Girardi ... no problem... but young forwards mistakes end up in lengthy healthy scratches
.
arcarsenal : 1/7/2018 9:52 pm : link
The Vegas expansion is a lot like JAX/CAR in the NFL back in the mid 90's.

I think you want the expansion team to be good right away in order to build a fan base - but they shouldn't be this good.

It was the same deal with the football teams. The NFL did a poor job there. The teams were both too good too fast.

AV would have benched Ovi for 10 games at a time early in his career when he was taking too many chances and not playing responsible defense

I mean, it could wind up working out - we already know the result of last night's game now and you're right, we probably would have lost.

Just not sure what the logic was going in. I would think it would have made sense to use Hank against the far superior team.

Kyle in NY : 1/7/2018 10:01 pm : link
I don't even think Buch makes that many mistakes. He's consistently making plays with the puck, at the very least keeping the play primarily in the offensive zone. Zibanejad is probably dying to get him back on his line. His production hasn't been the same.

It's horrendous coaching. If Buchnevich wasn't such a determined, seemingly hard working kid, he may have already bailed for the KHL by now.

Not unheard of for starting goalies to get their choice of games - and especially out of conference - choose to stat pad. 😀

But also I think hank faced Vegas in October and OP faced Arizona at the garden... so maybe they wanted to give these teams new looks too

Good grief.

Actually thought they hung in there alright considering the competition, a back to back, and losing Hayes early on. The defensive lapse for the winning goal was brutal though. Stuff like that just happens too often. Team looks sloppy and the coach is holding them back

that's like men's league defense. hard to blame the actual D there, it looked the play started as a 2 on 2 and the back-checking forward also picked up the 2nd forward (without the puck) and no one picked up the 3rd guy (who wound up scoring).

happens all the time in my league (LOL).

It was really probably Nieves guy, but without seeing how the whole play developed not sure I can say that with certainty.
....
BrettNYG10 : 1/8/2018 10:12 am : link
Buchnevich is treated much worse by AV, but Vesey is much lazier and worse defensively. Both should be in the top-9, but the relative treatment is just bizarre.
yes, it was probably Nieves' man
Greg from LI : 1/8/2018 10:13 am : link
I didn't mean "defense" as in the defensemen specifically, just the overall team defense which is so shoddy.
Well you are going to occasionally have breakdowns on D
MetsAreBack : 1/8/2018 10:55 am : link
we have them too much... but last night they seemed to play an OK game on the road against a good team on a back-to-back, etc.

The issue with this team is offense - scored more than 2 regulation goals in 5 of the past 16 games now. The top lines are cold, the defense hasn't contributed at all offensively, etc.

Also havent won a regulation game since Anaheim 12/19... thats 8 straight games without winning 5-on-5, which is what you have to do come playoff time anyway.
Offense struggling
Kyle in NY : 1/8/2018 11:00 am : link
You'd think that would compel the coach to give his most talented young forward more ice time and reunite his best line combination. Instead he gets scratched and Paul Carey is in the top 6

What the hell is this guy thinking? Did he even get pressed on it last night post game? The beat guys covering the team are horrendous.

I think the Rangers will never win a Cup as long as he's behind the bench, but apparently management is content to let him run the roster into the ground. Every time the press asks him about these bizarre lineup moves, he just says something like "I just felt that for the tonight it was the right thing to do". Infuriating.
Might have been a motivation tactic
MetsAreBack : 1/8/2018 7:02 pm : link
I guess I'll wait to see if he rolls out this same ridiculous lineup against the islanders next weekend before going too crazy.

But of course he's benched Buch for extended periods in the past. Gorton can't be too happy.
