FA O-linemen

Tim in JTown : 1/7/2018 3:14 pm
Grown tired the last couple years of an offensive that doesn't seem to have any pissed off, firey, get in your face and call you p**** for not pancaking the guy you're supposed to block linemen. We need some dudes to play through the whistle with some spirit and some veteran leadership to create an identity and confidence. We need some hard pipe-hitting mofos.

Looking at the list of 2018 Free Agents, anyone have any ideas as to which vets can come in and provide some energy and attitude on the line?

Andrew Norwell fits this description but he is going to cost 10-12 million per season.
The Giants' O-Line was very offensive these past few years

I do hope that we draft the next LT, but I hope he's very different off of the field.

Solder is too risky. He has shown signs of decline. Norwell should be our main FA target. I think chances are good that the Giants will go hard for him due to the Gettleman connection. One of the benefits of taking a QB with the second pick is that you have an inexpensive starter for years so you can use the $15-20 million of cap room saved to strengthen the rest of the roster.
The past 3 years we past on F/A OL who have played great..

..since signing

2015 Guard Richie incognito & Tackle Bryan Bulaga
2016 Tackle Mitchell Schwartz
2017 Tackle Andrew Whitworth

I don't believe we pursued any of those guys in F/A

hopefully this new guy Dave G can identify and pursue OL talent a lot better than J Reese
Ryan Jensen
BigBlueHens : 1/7/2018 3:45 pm : link
is that type of lineman. He is the center for Baltimore. I have been to a few Ravens games this year and he basically starts out every game with a sucker punch to the defensive lineman's mask. He is a nasty player, who is good for those hard hitting blocks, with maybe a penalty.

He seems to be an average starter, nothing special or flashy, but he is some Ravens fan's favorite player. The one thing I like about him is when Flacco took that huge hit against the Dolphins on TNF, Jensen was the first and really only player to run over to the Dolphins player and give him a shot, and he made it known that you don't hit his quarterback like that. Interesting player to watch this offseason.

Ironic that we wanted no part of Incognito after the Miami foolishness but we took a chance on other guy involved. Looking back I guess you can say they took a chance on the wrong guy

So? We have about 26 now without cuts. Add a draft pick..move Flowers if possible to RG on a if you cant pan out here...goodbye deal Wheeler at OLT or ORT.
Norwell covers Wheeler or Flowers on the left..a Fa Right Tackle(easier to find) or draft one. Then on to the 19 draft looking for OL.

I completely agree but I doubt Pugh gets that. He will most likely sign for 8-9.

I wasn’t suggesting that the Giants shouldn’t sign him I was just pointing out that he is going to be very expensive.

Pugh won’t get that kind of money. He’s been injured too much. I think about half that.

He played for $8M this past season. He'll have to swallow some humble pie to take less per year.
Norwell and Jensen

Both have played all 16 games this year.

Pugh's salary was set by his Year-Five option, which the Giants exercised way back in April 2016. He missed five games that year, and eight in 2017, and hasn't distinguished himself when cleared to play. He might get a contract with a big nominal value, but it won't have a ton of guaranteed money. Alternatively, he might sign a one-year (or even two-year) "prove-it" deal and gamble on hitting the jackpot next time. He's only 27, so there's still time.
Fluker

In pre-season and during the season the Giants were always able to run the ball when he played.
gaurds wil be available
Njgfan : 1/7/2018 6:59 pm : link
I looked at just about every team that is playing this weekend..Most of them run the ball well and just about every team has a free agent starter at guard that will be on the market.
Pugh

I wouldn't be surprised if NO ONE gives him a long term deal.

playoff free agent lineman

Guards (NO) Keleme.(CAR) Norwell. (JAX) Omameh. (ATL)Garland. (TITANS)Kline. (MINN)Berger. Centers (RAMS) Sullivan.(KC)Fulton. Also both NE starting tackles,Solder and Fleming and the backup Waddle. Not saying any of these guys are great but would probably be upgrades.

Likely so. And in high demand I believe. But we need quality and quantity, as well as homegrown, and he might've the best on the list, and easiest to life with the Gettleman connection.
An under the radar kind of signing
TheMick7 : 1/8/2018 6:52 am : link
would be Chris Hubbard OT Steelers-27 He did a good job filling in for Marcus Gilbert & he wouldn't break the bank!
I think Pugh will wind up signing a one year deal...
Milton : 1/8/2018 7:41 am : link
...for somewhere between $3M-$6M. Whether it's with the Giants or another team, I couldn't tell you, but he needs to prove he can finish a season before he gets the long term deal for big money. If the Giants sign Norwell for $12M/year (that's the minimum he'll get), I could see Pugh going to Carolina.

Gettleman signed Matt Kalil to a 5-year $55M contract with $31M guaranteed last March and it's not like he was coming off of a career year. He also gave his former 3rd round pick, OG Trai Turner, a 4-year extension worth $45M. So he's not shy about shelling out the big bucks on OL talent that ain't exactly Joe Thomas and Larry Allen.
The Giants need to do what they didn't do last offseason
Brown Recluse : 1/8/2018 8:02 am : link
because Jerry Reese is a moron... they need to get some older stop gap-type players in here on the cheap who can man the position with competency in the short term. Begin funneling in young talent this April.

Both the offensive and defensive line should always have a good mix of youth, and veteran leadership.

We can bring in a guy like Norwell at Guard and/or Jensen at Center, along with maybe a Whitfield type signing at tackle - or some combination of a big ticket guy and an older stop gap, this offensive would be in much better shape next year along with one or two young guys in the draft - this offensive line will be on the right track again moving forward.
That last bit was not coherent,
Brown Recluse : 1/8/2018 8:04 am : link
but you get my point. :)

They ain't, but they're better players than what's on tap this offseason. Kalil, in particular, is a very good LT who just needs to get healthy.

Other than his rookie year when he was named to the Pro Bowl, he had been a big disappointment even when he was healthy. Not that I followed his career, but that's what I recall reading about him going into last year's free agency market. What kind of year did he have for Carolina?
With Reese/Ross out the door, this might not be worth as much
JonC : 1/8/2018 8:15 am : link
but a few UFAs the Giants had liked in the draft include : Mewhort, Swanson, Seantrel Henderson, Pasztor, and I'd take a look at Donald Stephenson. Fluker could return but his pass pro is typically poor. They represent some value via UFA.

Perhaps DG gives Norwall the Trai treatment and brings him in.

They were poised to draft Solder, but his medicals need a look.

Mewhort is another that can't stay healthy. I'm curious to see who the new OC will be and what kind of offense will be implemented. Do they stick with the WCO or go back to the play-action vertical offense? I think the vertical offense suits Eli and Rosen best. Darnold may be better suited to the WCO because of his mobility. And does the new OL coach favor a zone-blocking scheme or the drive-blocking variety? That'll play a role in who they target in both free agency and the draft.
Fluker may not be ideal...
Milton : 1/8/2018 8:26 am : link
But he is an asset to the run game and is a great locker room guy, so he does check some of the boxes with Gettleman.
John Sullivan could be an option at Center.
Brown Recluse : 1/8/2018 8:55 am : link
He was one of the top centers in the league with the Vikings and then got hurt in 2015. Spent a year with the Redskins and then signed with the Rams last year for just under a million (thanks Jerry) and started 15 games.

He'll be 33 in August but could be a good one or two year, short term option until they find an heir.
What BBI has to realize
Doomster : 1/8/2018 9:11 am : link
is that this OL is not going to be fixed in one season...many point to Minny, but that is not the norm....

We have some cap space, not a lot.....we have a lot of players to replace on the roster.....and talk of Fluker, Wheeler, and Bisnowaty being starters, is, well, wishful thinking.....

What we will have is another patchwork OL, with guys not having experience playing together....it may function better than last year's line, or not.....just too many unknowns at this time....

I don't think anyone is expecting an entire fix in one season. But it is entirely possible to turn this into a good unit next season.
