Is it just me who hates Tony Romo as an announcer?

Vin_Cuccs : 1/7/2018 4:26 pm
Everybody praises and loves the guy, but I am not a fan at all.

Major exaggerations. Speaks in generalizations. Trys to predict every play. Everyone and everything is either the best ever or the worst ever. Way too much and always over the top. Makes odd sounds and noises.

Yelling and screaming for every play. Very difficult to listen to, and the fact that everyone heaps praise on him makes it worse.

In the last minute of the Jaguars vs Bills heard:

"This was the best game ever!"

"You might just be looking at the future best cornerback."

Just had to vent a little. Very tough to listen to.

His childlike gushing and enthusiasm for the game
jnoble : 1/7/2018 4:55 pm : link
...is either what you like or hate about him. I generally like him so far because at least he's not boring
He's very good.
eclipz928 : 1/7/2018 5:02 pm : link
He brings a lot of energy and knowledge to the booth. A game like today would have been almost unwatchable without someone like him doing the color.
I like Romo
liteamorn : 1/7/2018 5:05 pm : link
A LOT as an announcer
I donít want to like him
SLIM_ : 1/7/2018 5:06 pm : link
But was entertained. Wasnít afraid to admit his mistakes Wasnít trying to put on a show seems like he is legitimately exited
I don't like that sometimes his excitement
smshmth8690 : 1/7/2018 5:06 pm : link
makes him sound like a fan with a rooting interest, but I thought his explaining of how to throw in the wind, and how the ball will react was very good.
He's definitely gotten better since the beginning of the season.
OdellBeckhamJr : 1/7/2018 5:10 pm : link
I think his insight is great during strategic moments of the game.
I like him
AnishPatel : 1/7/2018 5:13 pm : link
after listening to him. During the regular season, I haven't seen the games he did, but I was impressed today. Good Xs and Os and ability to convey that to the viewers
He's Good
lax counsel : 1/7/2018 5:14 pm : link
Knows the game, understand the situation and at least comes across as unbiased. He's a lot better than many of the NFL commentators.
Section 125
Vin_Cuccs : 1/7/2018 5:17 pm : link
Two questions for you:

Are you comparing Tony Romo to warm apple pie and vanilla ice cream?

And you know there is no section 125 in the stadium, right?

He's talking about the old stadium
He was great week one and has gotten progressively worse
Go Terps : 1/7/2018 5:22 pm : link
It wouldn't be the first time a good announcer was ruined by network producers.
I really like him
PatersonPlank : 1/7/2018 5:32 pm : link
He knows his stuff (obviously), and is pretty funny
He can be good but he needs some seasoning
j_rud : 1/7/2018 5:57 pm : link
Some of his insights are excellent, but he's gotta let it breathe a little. He steps all over his partners feet to the point where it gets really annoying. If he can tone it down a little he can easily be one of the better commentators around, maybe even the best. He clearly knows the game. I think he's just gotta learn to not talk as much.
I think Tony is channeling
JohnF : 1/7/2018 6:16 pm : link
Hank Stram as an announcer. Hank had a habit of trying to call the play before it happened, based on the formation. Here's SB XXV radio feed with Jack Buck and Hank Stram:

Watch those Giants matriculate down the field!
Canít stand him
UConn4523 : 1/7/2018 6:17 pm : link
I appreciate the analysis, some of it is pretty cool, but most of the time he sounds like a kid racing downstairs on Christmas morning and it doesnít stop for 4 quartets.
He's borderline unlistenable...
Torrag : 1/7/2018 6:22 pm : link
...really, really bad.
He's spectacular
Azul Grande : 1/7/2018 6:26 pm : link
For people in his role, it's #1) Collinsworth #2) Romo and then a big gap to everyone else.

He treats his audience like people who want to learn the game rather than just be told what just happened.
Diarrhea
XBRONX : 1/7/2018 6:26 pm : link
of the mouth
he's the best announcer out there by a wide margin
GiantsFan84 : 1/7/2018 6:26 pm : link
.
I like romo a lot
djm : 1/7/2018 6:34 pm : link
And yet I fucking hate Collinsworth. Not sure what separates the two other than maybe romo doesn't talk as much? Collinsworth is smart but he's so fucking annoying. I swear he must get paid by the word.
I could care less that he was a cowboy
Essex : 1/7/2018 6:59 pm : link
He is one of the words announcers in sports, anything interesting he has to say gets lost in a verbal diarrhea that is painful, and i mean absolutely painful, to listen to.
hyperbole, in general, is a much larger cultural issue.
wigs in nyc : 1/7/2018 7:20 pm : link
probably the biggest ever cultural issue any greatest nation on earth has ever faced. Totally unprecedented.
I vote for Tony
rasbutant : 1/7/2018 7:21 pm : link
i think he does a good job, room for improvement though.
.
arcarsenal : 1/7/2018 7:32 pm : link
He's good, it's just that the excitability and giddiness get tiresome after a while.

If he could tone that down, I think he'd be great - he's an interesting listen if you take that stuff away.
He was a cowgirl for how long?

Poison gets in your brain! Bad shit...
I think he's pretty good.
NYRiese : 1/7/2018 9:38 pm : link
I like him as a person.
He is horrible
JerrysKids : 1/7/2018 10:39 pm : link
I agree, too much blah blah. It's a lot of look at me BS.
Not a fan...
trueblueinpw : 1/7/2018 10:56 pm : link
For everyone who says that he calls out the play before it happens, is that really a good thing? Anyway, he gets as many calls pre snap wrong as he gets correct and Iím not altogether sure which is worse.

Iíve always thought the most important quality in any sports commentator is to not get in the way of the game. Thatís why I still think Summerall and Madden were the best. Itís great to draw out the big plays after they happen but I really donít want or need pre snap guesses at whatís about to happen. Let the game play out on the field and then try to bring a little something to the event which isnít already obvious.
Great announcer
RetroJint : 1/7/2018 11:33 pm : link
Conveys football knowledge without hitting you over the head with how much he knows. No pretensions . Great guy. Easy listen as opposed to somebody like Gruden, who mercifully is leaving the booth.

Romo: best analyst I heard this season. Worst: Tie: Ronde Barber & James Lofton
Room is just America in the 21st century, its alll about ME. Its
plato : 1/8/2018 12:32 am : link
The attitude that cones through everywhere about everything. I hate the Cowboys so it would take a lot for me to like Romo. He doesn't make it. I guess I'm still looking for the early 20 th century.
I have no problem with Romo
BlackLight : 1/8/2018 12:37 am : link
And I think people worry way too much about who is calling the game.

Talks WAAAAY too much.but

+1.
Romo announcer is great love

His insights on !
Somewhat ironic Romo statement late in the game
GiantsUA : 1/8/2018 7:55 am : link
Something like this - "this is what we play for, this is it, a QB wants to be in this situation and needs to be successful"

For a pretty good in season QB, his post season work smelled.
Fans should pay attention to him
JonC : 1/8/2018 8:00 am : link
you'll learn more from him than most of the droids they shove out in front of a camera.
he is annoying at times
GMAN4LIFE : 1/8/2018 8:16 am : link
otherwise, he isnt terrible.

just sometimes when he is calling the plays and then it happens he acts like mister know it all.
The hate him comes from him being a Cowboy and you're a homer
Jimmy Googs : 1/8/2018 8:21 am : link
Romo does a nice job as an announcer.

Compared to the rest of the morons in the booth he will be blowing right past them in a short time...
This is more..
FatMan in Charlotte : 1/8/2018 8:29 am : link
of the issue than anything else:

Basically, there are so many morons out, ex-players hired because of their name or playing experience rather than what they bring as an announcer that if a person is even semi-coherent, he gets accolades.

I've long maintained that we'd be better off with color guys who know the sport and the nuances. That doesn't necessarily mean they played before. Guys like Trent Green, charles Davis, Dan Fouts or the Barber's might be well spoken, but they are terrible analysts.
I think he does a really good job
PaulBlakeTSU : 1/8/2018 8:37 am : link
breaking down what he's seeing and he is processing it quickly for viewers. Is he perfect? No, he's a bit too excitable and talks a bit too much. But he's a rookie at this and should improve upon it.

I, too, enjoyed the way he discussed the Cover 4 play at the end of the game.

I think he is already one of the best NFL color commentators out there.

well put!! nothing to add
I Like Him
Rong5611 : 1/8/2018 9:24 am : link
Needs some polish though as has been stated.
If he talked half as much, he'd be very good
Greg from LI : 1/8/2018 9:37 am : link
But he never, ever stops talking, and half of what he says is shouted. He's still new at this so he could improve.
Could not disagree more with the OP.
Racer : 1/8/2018 10:08 am : link
Whether it's BBI or television or satellite radio, I want to hear guys that played or coached tell me what they see. Everybody else, including the douchebag network TV producers in the truck add little value.

Don't really care about delivery unless they're Scott Zolak and deliver their message as if they were suffering from Turrets Syndrome.

Romo loves the game and it comes through.

it's like watching the game with your friend with the "Ohhh noooo!" constantly, but at the same time he really knows the game.

He seems to really be enjoying himself in the booth, which lends itself to the telecast IMO.

Was a bit disappointed he didn't know the 10 second run off play yesterday, saying something about a "freebie"...LOL....sometimes is amazing even a QB isn't aware of all the rules.

Romo
Giantslifer : 1/8/2018 2:14 pm : link
Romo announces like he played - Sloppily.
How many times did he ask if there's a 10 second runoff? 23
No personality. No Originality.Might as well have a pre programmed talking robot doing games.
Nance is no better, should stick to golf. At least then, you know why you fell asleep

what was going on when he thought the Bills would get a "freebie" on the 10-second runoff when Taylor was injured.

Then he tried to pawn it off on getting bad info.

He's OK. I don't like how he screams and gets excited at minor plays.

He was wrong thinking there was a freebie - true.
However, The ref never said there was a 10 sec run off and should have. But did you see where the 10 sec runoff was? I didn't. And the ref never said anything about the second one after the penalty
The ref did mention it after the penalty.
He's excellent at diagnosing plays
Matt M. : 1/8/2018 2:19 pm : link
and explaining them. He is terrible with a lot of other nuances, like the rules and getting cuaght up to much in discussion.
