Is it just me who hates Tony Romo as an announcer?

Vin_Cuccs : 1/7/2018 4:26 pm
Everybody praises and loves the guy, but I am not a fan at all.

Major exaggerations. Speaks in generalizations. Trys to predict every play. Everyone and everything is either the best ever or the worst ever. Way too much and always over the top. Makes odd sounds and noises.

Yelling and screaming for every play. Very difficult to listen to, and the fact that everyone heaps praise on him makes it worse.

In the last minute of the Jaguars vs Bills heard:

"This was the best game ever!"

"You might just be looking at the future best cornerback."

Just had to vent a little. Very tough to listen to.

As I said I said in the other thread
Canton : 1/7/2018 4:30 pm : link
He's already regarded as one of the better announcers in the game and he's only a rook. He'll get even better. Love his analysis.
I just commented about Romo being nauseating

On the game thread. I agree with you
Sorry, I think He's Pretty Good,

knows his stuff.
“It’s cover 4 Jim....cover 4!”

I wanted to reach through the TV and punch him in the face.

I'm with you
bigbb : 1/7/2018 4:31 pm : link
He talks way too much. before he finishes one sentence he starting another one I can't take him
he's gotta tone it down
Enzo : 1/7/2018 4:32 pm : link
a bit IMO. I think eventually he figures it out.
He wasn’t great today,
Section331 : 1/7/2018 4:34 pm : link
but overall, I think he’s been outstanding all year.
Like the Xs and Os he does.
BillT : 1/7/2018 4:34 pm : link
At the end of the game he was pointing out how TT was missing the WR making the out cut against the cover 4. Sure enough the guys were wide open. Then I though about how Eli would have seen that in an instant.
....
Micko : 1/7/2018 4:34 pm : link
I like him.
I think he’s good, and he’ll get better but one thing is for sure
Ben in Tampa : 1/7/2018 4:35 pm : link
He is exponentially better than Phil Simms has been the last few years

That was great stuff right there. He's actually been a breathe of fresh air all season.
d ont like him as announcer
micky : 1/7/2018 4:36 pm : link
only reason he's liked because he knows and identifies plays etc..but calling a game, just don't like him in that respect
As I said on the game thread...
bradshaw44 : 1/7/2018 4:38 pm : link
GREAT insight, but talks too much. You almost didn’t need Nance there.
Think he is very good.

I think goving him the A list games right off the bat was a mistake. How are you going to correct him when hes alr3ady getting the baller games? Not like they can take him off those prime games if he doesnt change his style. And he is a screamer. And his inner monologues for players are dumb. Today when Micah Hyde was going off:

"HEY! DID YOU SEE HYDE SQUIRT WATER AT THE FAN?! The fan was like 'yea you're outta here' but then Hyde squirts water at the fan and says, 'No, YOU'RE OUTTA HERE!' Ha ha haaaaaaaaa!"

Ugh

And I have felt this way for almost 15 years. Lol
I agree that today wasn't his best work.

To be fair, though, consider how frustrating it must have been for Romo, knowing that he could have strolled onto the field and done a better job in the passing game than either of the two starting QBs... at least until the first hit.

He's much easier to take when the quarterbacks are playing well and seeing the same things he sees. Then he provides real insight into why the ball goes where it does.

today.
That’s why they used to call it
Dave on the UWS : 1/7/2018 4:45 pm : link
“Color commentary”. Most guys are bland as can be.
He never shuts up
moespree : 1/7/2018 4:48 pm : link
Like ever. Even to the point where he just starts randomly yelling things out in the middle of a play when Nantz is calling it. He does provide good analysis though, that's true. But his non stop talking is annoying for 3 hours.
I don't know..
FatMan in Charlotte : 1/7/2018 4:48 pm : link
what was going on when he thought the Bills would get a "freebie" on the 10-second runoff when Taylor was injured.

Then he tried to pawn it off on getting bad info.

He's OK. I don't like how he screams and gets excited at minor plays.
The best in the business.
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 1/7/2018 4:49 pm : link
Listen to Aikman today and you'll see why.

Romo is the next Madden.
Some people would

complain about warm apple pie and vanilla ice cream...
..
Clintqb17 : 1/7/2018 4:50 pm : link
He does a good job. Better than P. Simms.
Romo is the RG III of announcers.
Tom in NY : 1/7/2018 4:53 pm : link
A nice novelty act when he first started, but the performance is declining as we move along.

Sorry, I can't listen to him second guess himself on rules incessantly, then try to act like everyone was confused by it. NO Tony, you owed the audience an apology.
Talks WAAAAY too much.

He was wrong thinking there was a freebie - true.
However, The ref never said there was a 10 sec run off and should have. But did you see where the 10 sec runoff was? I didn't. And the ref never said anything about the second one after the penalty
His childlike gushing and enthusiasm for the game
jnoble : 1/7/2018 4:55 pm : link
...is either what you like or hate about him. I generally like him so far because at least he's not boring
He's very good.
eclipz928 : 1/7/2018 5:02 pm : link
He brings a lot of energy and knowledge to the booth. A game like today would have been almost unwatchable without someone like him doing the color.
I like Romo
liteamorn : 1/7/2018 5:05 pm : link
A LOT as an announcer
I don’t want to like him
SLIM_ : 1/7/2018 5:06 pm : link
But was entertained. Wasn’t afraid to admit his mistakes Wasn’t trying to put on a show seems like he is legitimately exited
I don't like that sometimes his excitement
smshmth8690 : 1/7/2018 5:06 pm : link
makes him sound like a fan with a rooting interest, but I thought his explaining of how to throw in the wind, and how the ball will react was very good.
He's definitely gotten better since the beginning of the season.
OdellBeckhamJr : 1/7/2018 5:10 pm : link
I think his insight is great during strategic moments of the game.
I like him
AnishPatel : 1/7/2018 5:13 pm : link
after listening to him. During the regular season, I haven't seen the games he did, but I was impressed today. Good Xs and Os and ability to convey that to the viewers
He's Good
lax counsel : 1/7/2018 5:14 pm : link
Knows the game, understand the situation and at least comes across as unbiased. He's a lot better than many of the NFL commentators.

Two questions for you:

Are you comparing Tony Romo to warm apple pie and vanilla ice cream?

And you know there is no section 125 in the stadium, right?

He's talking about the old stadium
He was great week one and has gotten progressively worse
Go Terps : 1/7/2018 5:22 pm : link
It wouldn't be the first time a good announcer was ruined by network producers.
I really like him
PatersonPlank : 1/7/2018 5:32 pm : link
He knows his stuff (obviously), and is pretty funny
He can be good but he needs some seasoning
j_rud : 1/7/2018 5:57 pm : link
Some of his insights are excellent, but he's gotta let it breathe a little. He steps all over his partners feet to the point where it gets really annoying. If he can tone it down a little he can easily be one of the better commentators around, maybe even the best. He clearly knows the game. I think he's just gotta learn to not talk as much.
I think Tony is channeling
JohnF : 1/7/2018 6:16 pm : link
Hank Stram as an announcer. Hank had a habit of trying to call the play before it happened, based on the formation. Here's SB XXV radio feed with Jack Buck and Hank Stram:

Watch those Giants matriculate down the field!
Can’t stand him
UConn4523 : 1/7/2018 6:17 pm : link
I appreciate the analysis, some of it is pretty cool, but most of the time he sounds like a kid racing downstairs on Christmas morning and it doesn’t stop for 4 quartets.
He's borderline unlistenable...
Torrag : 1/7/2018 6:22 pm : link
...really, really bad.
He's spectacular
Azul Grande : 1/7/2018 6:26 pm : link
For people in his role, it's #1) Collinsworth #2) Romo and then a big gap to everyone else.

He treats his audience like people who want to learn the game rather than just be told what just happened.
Diarrhea
XBRONX : 1/7/2018 6:26 pm : link
of the mouth
he's the best announcer out there by a wide margin

I like romo a lot
djm : 1/7/2018 6:34 pm : link
And yet I fucking hate Collinsworth. Not sure what separates the two other than maybe romo doesn't talk as much? Collinsworth is smart but he's so fucking annoying. I swear he must get paid by the word.
I could care less that he was a cowboy
Essex : 1/7/2018 6:59 pm : link
He is one of the words announcers in sports, anything interesting he has to say gets lost in a verbal diarrhea that is painful, and i mean absolutely painful, to listen to.
hyperbole, in general, is a much larger cultural issue.
wigs in nyc : 1/7/2018 7:20 pm : link
probably the biggest ever cultural issue any greatest nation on earth has ever faced. Totally unprecedented.
I vote for Tony
rasbutant : 1/7/2018 7:21 pm : link
i think he does a good job, room for improvement though.
