Our likely HCs D is getting stomped out

twostepgiants : 1/7/2018 6:22 pm
Steve Wilks claim to fame is 1 year as DC of this Panther D

So far, 244 yards of offense allowed. 3 TD drives allowed. Brees has a 151 QB rating. This is just in one half of football

Forget takeaways or sacks, the Carolina D has managed just 1 QB hurry and only 1 tackle for loss. Ie no pressure at all

But don't worry. Wilks is gonna command that room at halftime and lead men in the second half

They are sacrificing their secondary in doing so and it hasn't paid off so far.

Brees is picking them apart.

IT certainly has kept them in the game. Cam scores here some how they go ahead.

How did his defense do against Shurmur?

And, fwiw, the saints have scored three points in the second half, so he did something right in the locker room at halftime.

24 points nearly midway through the fourth quarter in the super dome is not a bad performance.

If you told any DC coming into this game it would come down to Ginn and Josh Hill the DC would take that every time. Carolina has shut down the run. They’ve shut down explosive pass plays to Ingram/Kamara. Thomas has been pedestrian. They’re only 5 down with 9 minutes left. All things considered, I think the plan has been ok win or lose.

But then again, only one year as a DC, not exactly a huge body of work to go by, so you’ll have to excuse the skepticism. It feels a lot like McAdoo without extensive coordinator experience but with a personal connection.
Sure hope they aren’t overselling this whole commands a room thing.

Well, in his first year as DC, Carolina was 8th in YPG, 10th in PPG, and 3rd in rush yards per game.
This really...
FatMan in Charlotte : 1/7/2018 7:42 pm : link
is idiocy on full display.

The Carolina D has just given them a chance to win and this thread was started in the 1st half.

Then again, somebody started a thread talking about Jacoby Brissett being a sure-fire star after literally a quarter of play in a game he ended up having three turnovers in and losing.

It basically means we have a lot of reactionary dumbasses here.

This game shouldn't move the needle either way...However, to be fair, WIlks has only 1 year as the DC, so one game means more than it means for say Mcdaniels (on offense). Can't have it both ways..if we are to look at many games vs 1 game, then many season as a DC would be needed.

And as pointed out, his only experience as DC is from the booth by his choice.

“My first year, I’m going to do it from up top. I know a lot of guys do it from the field, but I want to be up there so I can see things and get ready for the next call, away from the sideline with all the emotion and hoopla. I’ll be focused and locked in.

Their D put them in a hole early on. That's a recipe for a loss. Now, the offense didn't do them any favors, but still the point remains. Going down by two scores early changed that entire 1st half and forcing adjustments you typically would not want to make.

I don't think Wilks did an awful job, but he certainly did not do a good job. He made some choices and got burned hard by Brees. It happens.

What a dumb

Also Rivera is a defensive coach.
It's funny everyone is down on the Patriots assistants because of Belichick but doesn't say the same for Wilks

that you can't judge Wilks poorly based on this game.

The thing is though, when push cones to shove I think Mara is going to have a tough time pulling the trigger on a coach with no HC experience and 1 year at DC.

I just don't see it, even if DG is on board, Mara won't be imv.

then I would like to pass on him. Why make the same mistakes again and again? McAdoo, some guy we had as a DC many seasons ago that never had experience. This team requires seasoned leadership and not guys that are learning on the job.

Wilks isn't McAdoo. And coaches have to start somewhere. It is about finding the right guy, letting him set up his staff and team, then live by his philosophy. There will be failures and that goes with the job. But if you are looking to get a guy on his ascendancy for the long haul, then you grab him and sit back.
I find it interesting that so many
Chris684 : 1/8/2018 6:18 am : link
have issues with no experience but are so ready to commit to a “name” like McDaniels probably because they feel it’s a bigger splash, in spite of the fact his only experience as HC is on par with what McAdoo did here.

If you bring in a first-time HC like Wilks, it’s because you believe in the qualities he brings as a leader. He happens to be known around the league as a no nonsense disciplinarian which is exactly what this team needs right now.

There’s also no reason he can’t, when he builds his staff, bring in a veteran coordinator with HC experience that he can lean on or bounce ideas off of. Someone in the mold of a Kubiak or Norv Turner.
