Our likely HCs D is getting stomped out

twostepgiants : 1/7/2018 6:22 pm
Steve Wilks claim to fame is 1 year as DC of this Panther D

So far, 244 yards of offense allowed. 3 TD drives allowed. Brees has a 151 QB rating. This is just in one half of football

Forget takeaways or sacks, the Carolina D has managed just 1 QB hurry and only 1 tackle for loss. Ie no pressure at all

But don't worry. Wilks is gonna command that room at halftime and lead men in the second half

Assistant head coach for 3 years. And interim head coach whole Rivera was out doesn't help matters?

He’ll fit right in here. The Saints are usually good for 40+ against any Giants team.
Wilks ready to interview tomorrow

With the loss today I suppose.
unless Belicheck is coming (good luck on that)

then every choice is between someone "inexperienced" or someone that has failed at least one place before. Pick your poison.
Speaking of examples coordinators that made great head coaches

We are overlooking an obvious one in Sean Peyton. Obviously was OC here.

Not as a candidate, maybe, because, not sure the mechanics of prying him from nawlins. And you do need serious hawgs not just mollies for that shtuff he runs.

But a great example.

None of the candidates look like a lock.

So if Shurmur's offense can't score next week do we not want to hire him as well? I guess if NE puts up a bunch of points we'll be all in for McDaniels...

Carolina has held hen to 30 something the entire game. D Coordintoar must suck.

They are sacrificing their secondary in doing so and it hasn't paid off so far.

Brees is picking them apart.

If you told any DC coming into this game it would come down to Ginn and Josh Hill the DC would take that every time. Carolina has shut down the run. They’ve shut down explosive pass plays to Ingram/Kamara. Thomas has been pedestrian. They’re only 5 down with 9 minutes left. All things considered, I think the plan has been ok win or lose.

The problem is they’re losing and all those tertiary players are still beating their better defenders. I understand the game plan, but it hasn’t worked.

The defense gave them a chance to win on the road vs a team that’s a good bet to rep the NFC in the playoffs. I think he did a solid job today al things considered.

Well, we can't hire him now... what will we do?
I have a feeling
Breeze_94 : 1/7/2018 8:05 pm : link
it comes down to the NE guys and Wilks. Now that the Panthers are done, Wilks is free and can be officially named coach. If he is in fact the Giants guy, I would expect it to be wrapped up and announced this week.
Head Coach is a completely different skill set than OC or DC or STC
arniefez : 1/7/2018 8:06 pm : link
Mara has been in football his whole life (not that you can tell sometimes). Gettleman is being paid big bucks to endorse someone who can be a good head coach. Mara failed badly last time. Maybe Gettleman can help.

Over reactionary fans is what this board has on display quite often.

Actually Panthers defense kept them in game second half.

Brees was unbelievable.

I like the second half adjustments Wilks made. Put them in position to win.
31 points given up in the dome

Kamara and Ingram shut down.

Huge stop at the end of the game.

Carolina D showed pretty well today overall.
It's a fair point.
Jarvis : 1/7/2018 8:22 pm : link
This game shouldn't move the needle either way...However, to be fair, WIlks has only 1 year as the DC, so one game means more than it means for say Mcdaniels (on offense). Can't have it both ways..if we are to look at many games vs 1 game, then many season as a DC would be needed.

And as pointed out, his only experience as DC is from the booth by his choice.

“My first year, I’m going to do it from up top. I know a lot of guys do it from the field, but I want to be up there so I can see things and get ready for the next call, away from the sideline with all the emotion and hoopla. I’ll be focused and locked in.

of NO did them in.They generally played better in the 2nd half.
That, and Cam(who seemed like he was on a sedative the whole game, but coming out of it the last 5 minutes).

Their D put them in a hole early on. That's a recipe for a loss. Now, the offense didn't do them any favors, but still the point remains. Going down by two scores early changed that entire 1st half and forcing adjustments you typically would not want to make.

I don't think Wilks did an awful job, but he certainly did not do a good job. He made some choices and got burned hard by Brees. It happens.

What a dumb

Thread. Brees in the Superdome and the post made after the first half.

That Carolina D looked better against the Saints in NO than virtually any team I have ever seen play them there.

Try again.
This is not his defense.
larryflower37 : 1/7/2018 8:35 pm : link
The defense is inherited.
Also Rivera is a defensive coach.
It's funny everyone is down on the Patriots assistants because of Belichick but doesn't say the same for Wilks

He is the least experienced of the bunch.

How many coaches has Gettleman hired in his career?
How many has Mara? How did that work out?
Holy fucking shit
speedywheels : 1/7/2018 8:59 pm : link
There are some really fucking stupid people.

You’re going to base his resume on one fucking half of play?!

Exactly! If he is smart, then he will delegate it out by hiring a DC and OC.
It's true
LakeGeorgeGiant : 1/7/2018 9:20 pm : link
that you can't judge Wilks poorly based on this game.

The thing is though, when push cones to shove I think Mara is going to have a tough time pulling the trigger on a coach with no HC experience and 1 year at DC.

I just don't see it, even if DG is on board, Mara won't be imv.

.... But Carolina should be winning this game. They keep settling for field goals.

And I don't know exactly how much of this you can place directly on Wilks.

It just seems like a hasty assessment.

Because the OP wants Shurmur and loves starting threads.
If Wilks has no experience as a HC
mdc1 : 1/8/2018 5:06 am : link
then I would like to pass on him. Why make the same mistakes again and again? McAdoo, some guy we had as a DC many seasons ago that never had experience. This team requires seasoned leadership and not guys that are learning on the job.

Wilks isn't McAdoo. And coaches have to start somewhere. It is about finding the right guy, letting him set up his staff and team, then live by his philosophy. There will be failures and that goes with the job. But if you are looking to get a guy on his ascendancy for the long haul, then you grab him and sit back.
I find it interesting that so many
Chris684 : 1/8/2018 6:18 am : link
have issues with no experience but are so ready to commit to a “name” like McDaniels probably because they feel it’s a bigger splash, in spite of the fact his only experience as HC is on par with what McAdoo did here.

If you bring in a first-time HC like Wilks, it’s because you believe in the qualities he brings as a leader. He happens to be known around the league as a no nonsense disciplinarian which is exactly what this team needs right now.

There’s also no reason he can’t, when he builds his staff, bring in a veteran coordinator with HC experience that he can lean on or bounce ideas off of. Someone in the mold of a Kubiak or Norv Turner.
