Baker Mayfield

Yoshibvillek1 : 1/7/2018 7:24 pm
I have read here that you don’t spend a 2nd pick on Baker Mayfield but this guy has so much passion and skill. He reminds me of Drew Brees. Drew is short too. I think this guy Rosen is NOT going to be worth the pick. He’s not a competitor, a premadonna, and has zero mobility. Name a USC QB who has made it in the NFL so forget Darnold. Mayfield is the guy for us. Anyone else is a wasted pick. We have no online and NFL QBs need to be mobile these days.

Wouldn’t do any good didn’t you read the op? We have no online
That’s just nonsense hold over from the college reg season
Giants_West : 1/7/2018 7:28 pm : link
They were saying the same thing about Mahomes last year. By the time the predraft process is complete he’ll be a top 12 pick for sure. In that range you don’t risk trading down if you are sure he is going to be the guy.

Actually, if you had bothered to watch Rosen, you would see he has solid mobility in and around the pocket. He's not Cam Newton, but not a statue. And Darnold with the USC label, guess that also eliminates Barkley as well, given the bust rate of Penn State running back. Other than that, great analysis- hopefully Mara and Gettleman have a copy.

Rosen was an elite youth tennis player, hardly a guy who can't move around. Also tennis is so dependent upon footwork, which is why i think Rosen has such great pocket presence and pocket mobility. He is an athlete. Only thing that concerns me is injuries; if not, I can't see him not being successful at next level
Baker

Can make all the throws strong arm accurate mobile
Short bad temper
Great competitor
Giants will not take him but I would

May not be a brilliant analysis but immobile QBs don’t do well in the NFL these days. Brady is the exception. I have not seen Rosen play but have read enough and talked with enough people who do watch college football that give me major pause on Rosen. Why shouldn’t we draft Mayfield?

Agreed 100%. I had read about the tennis part some time ago, slipped my mind.

To the original poster, go watch Rosen play before making such a horribly misinformed statement.

Early in the fall, I thought you were warming up to him. Aside from where he gets drafted what do you think of him now.... if I may ask?
With this logic
Marty866b : 1/7/2018 8:12 pm : link
We have to pick Ronald Jones with the first pick. USC quarterbacks have't worked out but Frank Gifford, Mike Garrett,O.J.Simpson,Marcus Allen, etc. The NFL should put Ronald Jones in the Hall of Fame now.

Difference is Mayfield can make the reads and is looking to pass the ball. Manziel was a DB that I knew would never be an NFL QB. If you couldn't see that you were blind. RG3 never made the reads that Mayfield does. There is no comparison.
And with the 2nd pick in the 2018 NFL Draft

I don’t like Mayfield but then again I did not like Watson last year

I don’t like Mayfield as he is ineffective throwing from the pocket
Mayfield is at his best on the move
He has to move to create throwing lanes
I love Mayfield.
NYG07 : 1/7/2018 11:16 pm : link
He is insanely accurate and has a great ability to break the pocket, keep his eyes down field and find the open man.

That drive he put together in the 4th quarter against Georgia was a thing of beauty.

That said, I would be happy with Darnold or Rosen too. But this whole notion that Mayfield could be had at the end of the first round is nonsense, he won't make it past the Jets at 6.
I hope no one holds this post against Mayfield.
TC : 1/7/2018 11:27 pm : link
I'm not A Rosen fan because of concerns about his ability to stand the physical punishment, but stuff like not being a competitor and lacking mobility is just laughable!
While I LOVE Darnold and think this year
chopperhatch : 1/7/2018 11:29 pm : link
Was an aberration, I also would be happy with Mayfield and somewhat happy with Jackson if we traded down far enough. Those who are looking for us to get another iron man qb who has ice water in his veins with a great arm like Eli are unrealistic.

I think Darnold xan be terrific. But I also think Mayfield can. I have to see how he grades out size wise, but I think he hadls a great make up to succeed here.

I know you're the guru around here but I highly disagree...

If he interviews well, teams will care less about his "antics"
I don't expect him to get past the Jets at 6. If he Falls to 8-10 a team will trade up. If he doesn't go 10, he goes 11...I think the kid will be that much of a hot item come draft day. Teams want guys who produce. His ability to move and keep eyes downfield for a throw over run is huge. He can run, but he shows tremendous accuracy while on move. I prefer darnold but I think mayfield will go top ten...whether or not he pans out is different story

but I agree we can trade down to get him. Rosen with the concussions scares me. Neurosurgeon dad is going to put a stop to that if he gets a few more. This isn't the 90s a-la Steve Young.

This might be true, that NYG could possibly trade down to get Mayfield, but why would you play games with a potential franchise QB? Unless NYG is highly confident that Mayfield's value is lower than round-1, this is way too risky.

If NYG likes Mayfield, go get him in your 2nd pick, and don't risk losing him to the Jets at 6 or any other team. Just go get him.

Mayfield can make all the throws with high accuracy, read defenses, find 2nd and 3rd options, look off safeties, throw from the pocket or on the run. He’s not Manzel or RGIII who were limited in many of these skills (or were alcoholics).

History disagrees with you. Character issues will drop a player on team boards like a hat. It has only gotten more prevalent with social media. Teams don't want media distractions.

Alwaysblue22 : 1/8/2018 10:20 am : link
Will be the QB who makes the biggest impact for whatever team that drafts him. And he will be drafted. If he goes to the Jags he will take them to the playoffs in his first season. He has everything you want in a QB, except ideal height and that factor will steer some teams away from him. If Rosen showed more desire and was not as concussion prone ( due to being a statute in the pocket) he would be an ideal pick. However he reminds me more of Kerry Collins than Tom Brady. We have already been down that Road with Collins.

He is so much more than that. You guys can bitch and moan all you want about his crotch grabbing and sprinting down the sidelines waving his arms.

Look at his play. He is easily the most accurate passer in this draft class, and he reads coverage and finds the open man.

There was a play in the big 12 championship where he had a pass rusher directly in his face, and he looked off the safety to the left, reset his feet to the right, and threw a dime for a 40 something yard touchdown, with a perfect pass before he got drilled.

Against Georgia, he went through his progression, held the deep safety and then threw a perfect pass over the LB and in from of the safety to his tight end.

He is not a perfect prospect by any means, but there is a ton to like about him.
Accuracy, mobility, high energy
LG in NYC : 1/8/2018 4:54 pm : link
I've liked Mayfield for a while now but after watching Brees yesterday, I am even more on the Mayfield train.

In my perfect world, we trade down a few spots get Mayfield and a few extra picks and re-stock the cupboard in a big way.

Oh I like Rosen a lot too. I think ultimately the Giants will end up deciding between Mayfield and Rosen, because I think Cleveland is going to take Darnold at 1. But who knows at this point.
My untrained eye

thinks Rosen is the best passer. Of course, the injury history scares me.

At the end of the day I'd be cautiously optimistic if they drafted either.
