Cuse fans?

Watching this championship, do you ever dream that someday we might be half this Good? Will we ever be top 25 again? Damn I hate these same teams year in and year out.

What the hell happened to Cuse over the past 20 years or So? Is it recruiting? How do you build up a program again to compete in college.

It’s recruiting. They’ll never land enough blue chips to compete even at a top 25 level
Recruiting this year has been

the best, on paper, in quite some time. Even with 4 star center Sampson not signing in December. If DeVito is the real deal at QB, I can see them starting to get to bowl games. Wining begets winning (better recruiting) in college ball.

Also, if they ever get around to the renovation of the Dome that's been discussed for two years ........
It's hard to convince the best players..

who are mainly in places like Florida, Texas and California to come up to Syracuse and freeze their asses off while playing second fiddle to a basketball program.

Even when they had decent teams, their recruiting area was still fairly limited and although they could grab the occasional guy outside the state, they were still losing in-state players to PSU, BC and elsewhere.

If you are a stud player, if you do go North, you're probably choosing ND, Michigan, OSU. You might look at PSU or Michigan state, but you sure as hell aren't going to Syracuse.

That alone will keep them from ascending as a football power for years to come. Their ceiling right now is BC.
I think it'll depend on what Dino Babers does.

He's 8-16 in two seasons, but seems to be beloved in Syracuse and across Upstate NY, across the board. Tough, players' coach. And he's won everywhere else he's been.

Playing in the ACC is a double-edged sword, imo. Sure, you're going to be running into juggernauts on a regular basis, but you'll also possible get battle-tested and battle-tough.

I don't claim to be a die-hard SU football fan. Just follow casually and root for them. Hit a game here or there. So my opinion is from a semi-distance. But this program has some very nice wins under its belt with Babers at the helm. The recruiting looks very good coming up. Might just depend on Babers' career goals and how long he decides to call Syracuse home.
All the ex original or prominent Big East schools

deserve to rot in hell because they all put money before athletics.

which maybe naive to expect them not to, but almost all of them have shit the bed since the dismembering of the Big East.

starting with BC, sure they have had random success, but overall their move to the ACC has been terrible for their sports programs and mostly it has for Syracuse too and Pitt.

Besides the other problems mentioned, who are BC and Syracuse's rivals? No one. they have zero rivalries in sports now, maybe Georgetown for Syracuse in basketball.

I used to go to BC games (football, basketball, hockey) and even in the Big East hey day their crowds were pathetic.

now they play teams with no local connections whatsoever, rivalry games make college football so much more interesting.

not saying it would help with recruiting, but maybe the school having a chance at being competitive in conference and going to a bowl game might.

and this is probably Syracuse football teams best year in a long time, definitely since leaving the Big East, with the Clemson W, but they were still 4 - 8.

When your pre-season realistic aspirations are the Music City Bowl or Motor City Bowl you can understand why recruiting is a challenge.

the weather is the same now as is was in the late 80s and 90s. Syracuse has had lots of success in the past recruiting in Florida, Texas and Cali. The dynamic QB has been a difference in the past - McPherson started it, followed by Graves and McNabb. Dungy is good, but can't healthy for more than 6-7 games. Hopefully DeVito is the goods.

The have also upgraded the practice facilities. They need to get started on the proposed Dome upgrade soon - that will also help.
Really had no

choice but to leave the Big East. Better to be in the ACC than be UCONN. I would have liked to see a Big East with Penn St in it - Joe Pa nixed that.
I would assume also

being a Private school, that funding is low.... how much does that hurt a college program compete with these state schools? or does alot of the funding for Athletics at Syracuse go to the Basketball program.. I read they have issues keeping assistant coaches due to the low pay.. how the heck do the other private schools keep pace with the state schools?

but although the weather was the same, the school's football reputation isn't.

You might have thought years ago about coming to SU to follow the legacy of Jim Brown, Ernie Davis, Czonka, Little, Morris, etc. But since the 70's, their main athletes that are known have been basketball players. Pretty much since Boeheim arrived and the Louie and Bouie show, and then from there, Pearl, Coleman, Carmelo, etc.

If most fans today can name a Syracuse football player since the 80's, probably 90% of them are naming McNabb. If they are naming any SU football player, Jim Brown probably still is the top guy, and he hasn't been there in 50 years!

My point is that if kids are going to come North to the cold, they are going to do it for a good program with a top reputation. And they aren't going to choose a school where basketball is king.

However, that thinking was prevalent in the early 80s also. The program was really bad in the 70s. Had decent teams with Bill Hurley, Monk, and of course Little Joe. I still think it can be a top 25 program again with a little luckv
were making a bowl game next year
CGiants07 : 1/9/2018 12:23 pm : link
like it or not but 1 player was the difference between bowling and not the last 2 years.... dungey, next year if dungey gets hurt we have a capable #2 guy in TD.
With improved recruiting and

The Dino scheme in the Dome, I think realistically the upside is a regular bowl team, fringe top 25 most seasons with the rare top 15ish season when everything breaks right roster and scheduling wise. This all assumes Dino stays long term, which I'm still not convinced of.

To ever think Syracuse will be a football power again in today's CFB climate is a little silly imo. I just want to be relevant.
