Bucky Hodges

lugnut : 1/9/2018 4:59 pm
Random-arse thread, I know, but...I got curious why I haven't heard his name since 2017 Draft and looked around. The dude is not even on a team!

He was a red-hot commodity and one of the highest rated TEs in last draft (speed! wingspan! catch radius!). This time last year, Kiper had him as the #32 prospect IN THE WHOLE DRAFT. Not actually drafted till the 6th Rd, had a cup of coffee with Minny and Carolina, and now he's a complete nobody. Just Wow!
because he's Hokie trash

I

remember Kiper loving him (again I don't watch much college football but when it was draft time and we were discussing TE's Kiper was very high on Hodges, obviously the name is memorable).
Anyway, Hodges is just a big receiver
Greg from LI : 1/9/2018 5:07 pm : link
He's not actually a tight end because he can't block. Like, at all.
When he was laughed at and mocked at the combine,
Diver_Down : 1/9/2018 5:10 pm : link
is when his stock fell. Mayock openly laughed at Hodges attempt to get in 3-point stance and said it was "comical". The guy never had to put his hand in the dirt in college and tried to learn how in the interim before the combine started.
Kind
DanMetroMan : 1/9/2018 5:17 pm : link
of weird a guy with legit receiving ability, measurables etc couldn't even stick as a developmental prospect on a practice squad.
There are guys like this in every draft.
81_Great_Dane : 1/9/2018 5:29 pm : link
Crazy athletic, but their actual football skills are insufficient for the NFL, and there's no position for them. Plus you don't know which guys turn out to lack the drive, or the intelligence, or the sobriety for pro football.

Is who Bucky reminds me of...he may make a killing in the stock market but not in pro-football.
He got hurt
BigBlueDownTheShore : 1/9/2018 5:42 pm : link
In the last preseason game.
I don't think he had great receiving skills.
robbieballs2003 : 1/9/2018 5:58 pm : link
If memeory serves me correctly he never played up to his height. He is, what, 6'6"? I think I remember him not being good at attacking the ball. He is a tweener in the worst sense of the word, kind of like the opposite of Ramsey. Ramsey is quick enough to play corner and physical enough to play safety. BH is too slow to be a WR and not physical enough to be a TE. He is kind of similar to Funchess but Funchess has proven that he is a much better talent than Hodges.
Now I do remember
lugnut : 1/9/2018 6:14 pm : link
Mayock laughing at Hodges' attempts at a 3-point stance.

I remember one scout saying that all the other scouting praise was "pure figment of the imagination." Guess he was right.

And like another poster said, you'd think Hodges would be able to latch onto a PS SOMEWHERE doing SOMETHING. Developmental something or other.
TEs

This team could use all the help possible its not exactly a team strength.
Again, he's not an NFL TE
Greg from LI : 1/9/2018 7:27 pm : link
Terrible blocker
How
Dragon : 1/10/2018 4:38 am : link
Many great forget great just good blocking TEs are there in the NFL today six to ten if that many. TEs are big WRs who line up close to line but are mostly involved in the passing game.

We have a weak blocking tight end whos a receiving threat. We need that dan Campbell/Michael Matthews type.

No we don't. We have one already.
He is slow as
section125 : 1/10/2018 7:39 am : link
molasses. During all the hype, saw a game with him playing, and noticed he ran bad routes and was very slow.
He made the Vikings squad, but was
BigBlueDownTheShore : 1/10/2018 9:58 am : link
injured and released. Picked up by Carolina on PS. He needed more polish on route running, because he was obviously more of WR then an actual TE.
You really..
FatMan in Charlotte : 1/10/2018 10:07 am : link
can do this exercise for a number of players who stood out in college, even at top D1 programs, but who can't make the transition to the NFL.

TE and WR are two positions that often fall into this category because the difference between elite and mediocre is very small in regards to speed and ability. Add in the various offensive schemes and a mobile TE may not be a fit on certain teams.

That razor-thin difference is also what causes WR's to drop off a cliff if they have leg injuries, like we saw with Nicks, Smith and Cruz. Hopefully it isn't the case with Beckham.

Foot and severe knee injuries are the kiss of death. After Nicks injured his foot in a game against TB he was never the same. Shockey also had foot injuries and after he had foot surgery after his rookie season he wasn't as explosive as he was during his rookie season. Smith and Cruz suffered devastating knee injuries that ruined their career and you can add Manningham to that list also.
I'm a Hokie

(fuck you Greg), and I never got the people who thought Hodges could make it in the NFL. Absolutely nothing jumps out at you.

I cant name another TE on the roster assured a spot next year, they all come up short as blockers, receivers, athletes and at this point upside.

And yet they are all better players than Bucky Hodges.
