I liked what I saw of Webb in college and preseason. But, if the Giants keep Eli (very likely) and draft a new franchise QB (also very likely) don't they have to try to get at least the 3 they gave up for Web in this year's draft? What do you think Webb could bring back? Having that high of a pick almost forces their hand into this.
If they trade down, and keep Webb, I'd love them to take Roquan Smith. He just stood out in both playoff games.
but I'd strongly doubt you get the same draft pick you spent to select him. Especially in a draft year that has some quality players at that position likely to slip to the 2nd round or later.
Finish the project and then see what he's worth in trade value after year two or three. Especially if they see fit to release Eli after the 2018 season. At that point Webb could be a valuable back up to Rosen (or Darnold). And then trade him when he has a year remaining on his contract after he's had a chance to impress in preseason games and/or regular season games. But definitely hold on to him for another year at least.
He didn't even get mop up time in a shit show of a season. You think any team thinks he has value when the Giants shouted loudly he doesn't?
If the Giants stupidly draft Rosen they're going to need Webb cuz Rosen is gonna be a disaster. Or if they draft Darnold they'll want someone to compete and push him.
Draft Barkley.
Heard this same crap last year when the Rams were not playing Goff. He sucks, he is a bust, he is this, he is that. There was no need for Webb to play this year with a shit show for an o-line and no one to catch the ball. When a rookie QB does not play it only means the coach had a plan and they stuck to it.
Without any viable tape on him, you’d be lucky to get a 4th.
No reason not to play Webb....even for a few snaps....just dumb.
But dumb was a common theme this year
Never know what we have....ge seems to check all the boxes
No value in trading now
Then the Giants must absolutely draft QB
They cant rest the entire future on a lottery ticket essentially

If Webb is as good as some on BBI say, that he checks all the boxes, was graded as a first, isnt that different as a prospect from this years group, now has a year of NFL seasoning, etc
Then he would hold some value
Nobody, including the Giants, really know what they have.
to the Giants and other teams. He's demonstrated virtually zero in the NFL and remains a development project, third round draft pick or not.
If he winds up a backup QB, his draft pick is a good one.

Draft Barkley. |
We can always count on you for in-depth analysis.
Going RB at #2 overall is typically a shite use of a blue chip draft pick.

this..kid can't even get the backup spot let alone see the field in this giants season
Very well be gone after next season. Nothing wrong with having two young guys competing for the job. I d keep Web, maybe he turns out to be the guy.
Look what happened there.
The Pats had 2 Backup QBs and didn’t get rid of them until they had played and got some cred.
Yes, at this point, it is a sunk cost so you try to recoup some value by getting some playing time.
Nassib didn’t get any significant game action and the Giants eventually just had to cut him loose.
For all we know Webb is the next Jimmy G... We have ZERO idea how well he will be as a NFL QB. Do you blame the Giants for not letting him "mop up" a pitiful season with a team who has a HORRIBLE offensive line and a depleted receiving corp.

Exactly. He was a 3rd round pick, which for QB is the equivalent of maybe a 5th round in any other position. If he was an NFL ready prospect he wouldn't have fallen to the 3rd.
He's gotten almost no looks in NFL. He's not going to factor into long term planning but they'll have him in camp and will likely get a chance to compete for backup position.
during his Red Shirt year (which all reports say he was a model understudy) then he is not being traded this year. That doesn't mean the team thinks he is the answer for the future (or that they will not use the 2nd pick in a QB). At this point there is no reason to give up on him, and it doesn't hurt to have options.
There is no trade value for Webb. BBI heavily overrated him based on the fact that he didn't play and based on what Reese and team stated (i.e., the team had a first round grade on him). Obviously the team did not have a first round grade on him, nor did anyone else. Otherwise he wouldn't have fallen to the back end of the third round, where he was likely another reach pick by Reese.
The fallacy amongst posters here is that there is no tape or book on Webb. Not true, there is substantial 2016 game tape. No, not his 20 best throws of the year but tape that actually features everyone one of his throws. He is highly inaccurate (being generous) and never ever came off his first read. I don't see how anyone could walk away from one of those tapes and objectively believe he is a NFL quality qb. The history of the NFL is littered with guys like him, moderately strong arm and not much else that never make it.
Why would any team give up any pick of value for him?
What are the Giants going to do if they draft a QB? They gonna keep Eli, Rosen, and Webb? I think not. They either jettison Webb or they Jettison Eli, and how much more can they shit on Eli? What if no one is willing to give a 6th? Or a 7th? He becomes a free agent, and I would put even money that he is as good, or better than Rosen, or Darnold.
RG-Knee and Kirk Cousins in the same Draft (1st and 4th rounds). Why is it a bad thing to have two young QB's as Eli is at the end?
This same thread was created 20 times with Ryan Nassib being the name instead of Davis Webb.
It didn't happen then, it's not going to happen now.

thank you!
Are you nuts? They used a 3rd and then proceeded to not have practice almost the entire season. He wouldn't bring back anything better than a 5th and even that is probably too high.
Plus, what did you like of him in pre-season? He barely played. Did he even throw 10 passes this summer?
Webb will most likely assume the role of the #3 QB but be given every opportunity to be the #2 QB this year. A year from now Webb could still hold value as the primary backup to whoever they take in the draft. Ideally Webb will develop enough to be a solid backup for the next three years at least. I was never a big fan of Webb and I do not consider him a realistic candidate to replace Eli in the near future.
I think Webb might start the year as our starting QB.
with Webb.....they used a 3rd round pick on him, when we had other immediate needs, and after one season they have no idea what this guy can do......Practice tells you nothing....once we were 1-6 at the bye, that was when we should have given Webb backup reps, because Geno had no future with this team.....
Now the top three qb's have huge question marks like injury history, too small, questionable decision making, etc. ......how much better are they than Webb? We don't know unless you compare his last year of college to theirs'......
for good picks. After Nassib was benched for Painter people discussed a 2nd round pick for him throughout the year. Webb didn't get the opportunity to show anything and the reason given is that he is far behind playing in a pro offense. He couldn't even get playing time on a team that was eliminated from the playoffs with more than a quarter of the season left. That's not gonna get a whole lot of people chomping to get him. He probably wouldn't get higher than a 6th so best to keep him and let him develop
People have drawn analogies between the Webb situation and the RG3/Cousins and Nassib situations. I do not think they hold. In the Redskins case, they did not have an Eli-incumbent sitting there. If the Giants keep him, Eli plays. So, they'd have both the #2 overall pick and last year's #3 sitting on the bench.Too much value on the bench for a team with holes, plus they would have already decided on Rosen/Darnold for the future. Webb has no place. Could we get a 3 for him? Probably not before the draft, although while he didnt play, he also didn't hurt his value by playing behind an awful line with practice squad receivers. During the draft perhaps someone would bite if they need a QB and the one they want doesn't fall to them.
Nassib situation also different. He was brought in exclusively as back-up since Eli had so many years left. No one expected him to be a starter ever.

lol. it really is true
I'm not so sure Webb was drafted as anything more than a project they might be able to develop into a backup, a trade, perhaps he's one of the few whom elevates to a solid starter, etc. He showed some promising tools in exhibition games as well as the warts from his scouting reports which aren't easily solved, especially when the time and focus tend to be put on the starter and game preparations.
Fans tend to overrate their own, and overrate the value and hit rate of a 3rd round draft pick, which is approx 25%.
Your concept is sound, but the surrounding realities are much more likely to occur, imv.
