NFL Network Analyst Daniel Jeremiah Talks NFL Draft Prospect

Tom from LI : 1/10/2018 9:55 am
This is a great video. Daniel Jeremiah brought some good points about Sam Darnold that I didn't know with coaching his turnovers. He likes Darnold better than Rosen. He says Darnold can do things to extend plays that Rosen can't.

With all that being said I really want Josh Allen. He would be the perfect pick if Eli stays. Dan says that he has the highest ceiling and could end up being better than Wentz.

I was against picking QB at #2, but now I am warming to it.

I can find something to like about each of the top 4 QB's

I prefer Allen, Mayfield, or Darnold though. If Rosen didn't have the concussion concerns he would be at the top of my list but I just don't think it is wise to risk the pick on him. If I had to guess I expect the Giants to favor Darnold as he is very similar to Eli in a lot of ways but only way more athletic. Eli was further along in his development and probably a safer prospect but Darnold has a huge upside. It is very important for Darnold to sit year one because he is so young and he has a lot to work on especially if they want to alter his throwing motion.
If the pick is Darnold or Allen

The Giants have to keep Eli for one more year as neither is ready to start.
Darnold
Cap'n Bluebeard : 1/10/2018 10:15 am : link
I know he underperfomed this year, but he's my guy. There's just something about him. If Eli Manning and Aaron Rodgers had a love-child, it would come out like Darnold. He's got the elusiveness and mobility to extend plays and turn nothing into something like Rodgers, an arm that can make all the throws, and he plays with Eli's will to win which, subsequently, leads him to make some throws that he shouldn't.

I'm not saying he'll end up as good as Eli or Rodgers and there are definitely concerns given his slide in play this year, but he's still the most intriguing guy to me.
The first time I saw Darnold play
Jay on the Island : 1/10/2018 10:20 am : link
I immediately thought I was watching a mobile Eli Manning. At times Darnold showed great pocket mobility to evade the rush. My one concern with Darnold is that sometimes he would leave the pocket earlier than he needed too.

Browns will likely to take Darnold. That leaves the Giants with Rosen, whose injury history may well be preclusive. Or Allen, who isn't worth the #2 pick. My guess is that the Giants either take Barkley or trade down. I would tentatively prefer the latter.

Eli is going to be kept anyway and will very likely open the season as the starter. The transition will either take place sometime during the season or in 2019.

Either way, Sam Darnold would win more games in the NFL right now than Rosen. If the Browns pick Darnold and start him right away, they are going to be better than any team starting Rosen right away. And the reason why is because of what Jeremiah said. Darnold can create. Rosen is a pure pocket passer...who is going to get hit a lot and who cannot escape pressure. To me, this is one of the most important qualities in the modern NFL. If you have no escapability, I don't think you are going to be a successful QB in today's NFL. Look at the quality of OL coming out of college, vs the quality of pass rushers. You are not going to have many clean pockets in today's game.

If Darnold goes 1st I would prefer to see the Giants trade down in the 4-5 range and then take either Allen or Mayfield. My one concern trading past the Colts is that they will likely trade it to a team looking for a QB. The Jets will reportedly strongly consider trading up for a QB so I expect the Colts to trade down unless Barkley is there.

I disagree Rosen is more NFL ready. Darnold has a bigger upside but he isn't as advanced as Rosen.
I love how Jeremiah said

The Giants realize they won't be picking this high again so they have to take their QB now. This is what I have been saying all along. If they wait to find their QB in a year or two then they will have to trade multiple high picks to move up to get him. Unless the Giants don't like any of the top 4 QB's(which i find it hard to believe that they don't covet at least two of them) then they need to take one here and not look back.
I think people are really hung up on the turnovers with Darnold
allstarjim : 1/10/2018 10:31 am : link
And I think that's really silly. The difference in INTs between Rosen and Darnold were negligible. Yes, Darnold fumbled a lot. But as Jeremiah said, he had a "fumble" on a pitch to Ronald Jones II that Jones did not catch or fall on...goes as a fumble to Darnold.

If he gets hit from behind mid-throwing motion, and fumbles, as he did against Ohio State, well, it's nearly impossible to avoid a fumble in that situation.

You have to look at the fumbles, and as Jeremiah stated, you can correct some of the ball security stuff. But when you look at their abilities as quarterbacks, Darnold is far superior.
Players are always hypercriticized during draft discussion

Daniel Jeremiah said that Josh Allen is more athletic than Carson Wentz and he also has a higher upside. He pointed out that Wentz was more advanced but Jeremiah said he felt that the Giants were the perfect fit for Allen.

had the 2nd pick in the draft they took a LB who changed the franchise and the league. If we hire a defensive coach maybe we look for a defensive player who can change the field quickly. Not sure there is a guy like that in the draft but if the Giants feel there is a defender who can make our defense a weapon then they may just shock people and go that route.

Barkley will not be taken at #2 by the Giants....

I hope he is taken at #2 just to teach you not to speak in absolutes.

There is no LT type defender in this draft. If there was or a Julius Peppers, Charles Woodson etc. then that would make sense. I do not see a defensive player worthy of the 2nd overall pick. There isn't a consensus top defender in this draft. The Giants need to find their next QB first and then worry about the rest of the roster.

I have been predicting Allen to the Giants for months. Most mocks are having him mid to late first round, but I don't see that. I predict he will wow at the combine and his stock will rise.

I think the Rosen injuries and Mayfield's antics might scare the Giants, so I think they go Darnold or Allen, whoever is available at #2, and will not trade down to risk losing both.

DonQ I think you make a good point, that perceptions can certainly change mightily as the process goes on with the all-star games, combine, pro days, and team visits still to go. The perception that Rosen and Darnold are 1-2 is subject to change. I personally don't see Darnold going anywhere but #1 overall but you never know. Who thought some picture of Laremy Tunsil smoking weed through a gas mask was going to be leaked on draft day?
This will continue to be a fun debate the next 4 months
NYG07 : 1/10/2018 7:26 pm : link
All this talk of I like him but eh if we could move back a bit is not a good idea.

The Broncos and Jets are both hot for QBs at 5 and 6, with other teams like the Cardinals or Redskins if they lose Cousins possibly in the mix as well. The Giants should just go get the guy they like best. I believe Cleveland will ultimately take Darnold at 1. So if the Giants love him, they should try and trade up to 1. If not, and they prefer Allen or Mayfield but don't quite think they are great value that high, don't get cute and try and maneuver for extra picks while landing them. Just take them at 2. Rosen is likely to go at 2, so if they love him, great.

The thing is also, there are a lot of teams that need QBs right there at the top of the draft...Browns, Giants, Broncos, Jets, that's four of the top 6 picks that might go QB. I don't think there is any way Allen goes below 6, he might go #1...who knows.

Then there are teams in the next 10 that might want a QB, Bengals, Redskins, Cardinals, Chargers, not to mention the Bills.

If any of those top QBs drop at all, those teams will be wanting to trade up.
I'd like to trade down
JohnF : 1/10/2018 8:04 pm : link
but with the Browns for the #4. In return, Cleveland could give us two of their three second round picks (from Eagles, from Texans), which would give the Giants three 2nd round picks...and we'd pick either Allen or Rosen, depending on what the Colts do.

Cleveland might bite to get Darnold/Barkley at the top of the draft, and we'd be able to do a quick Oline rebuild with three 2nd's!
Check out this video comparing Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson
Go Terps : 1/10/2018 8:12 pm : link
Jackson actually seems like the superior passer, including from in the pocket. Allen is far more frenetic, whereas Jackson is patient.

They had just drafted Simms a few years before, so they didn't need a QB. They had their young franchise QB already.
The Giants currently do not have their future franchise QB.

And no, Barkley will not be the pick at #2.
it's early but Jeremiah put forth the opinion if Darnold goes #1...
Torrag : 1/10/2018 10:14 pm : link
...to the browns that Allen could be our guy at #2. Carson Wentz 2.0 was his comment, but my comp is actually Roethlisberger. I said the same a few days ago and it makes a lot of sense. His 'floor' isn't as high as Wentz but his ceiling is stratospheric. Rare physical tools to develop and a good character young man. Makes a lot more sense than the oft injured Rosen who also brings some quirky character traits to the evaluation process, which muddy the waters for assessing hi final grade.
