This tape is from last August but I thought it was very interesting. Josh Rosen had made comments complaining about the difficulty of both playing Football and Going to School Link - ( New Window )
Its not lost me that Saban delivers his comments with Coke and AT&T corporate ads surrounding him and I know all about the big money in these NCAA big sports programs.
BUT...
I also understand the incredible value of both sports and a free education. Saban is absolutely correct - it isn't easy - but it's worth it and there's real lasting opportunity and value in being a college scholarship athlete.
My biggest accomplishments as a person started at a young age, having those around me pushing me out of my comfort zone. As I matured, I pushed myself. As a manager, I push others.
I have been around enough student athletes at the Div-1 level and it is truly a difficult task managing their time, especially considering that these guys have the temptations of the hottest girls on campus, parties, booster $- at the age of 18-22 where many come from very humble backgrounds.
Saban basically dismissed the which generation was more difficult and centered on the lessons we all know- especially at an older age-Ain't nobody giving you shit in this world. You want it, you go get it.
Being apart of a college football program, the damn football players at places like Bama get special treatment because they are football players. They get academic advisers and tutors that other people wish they had. Add on top of that, Bama's academic standards are way easier then at UCLA.
He's packaging the college football cartel as well as it can be
Despite the tutoring help they get, it is very hard to balance football practice and travel with a full coarse load. I don't know why anyone would think that comment is controversial.
And Saban can STFU. As a coach who makes up to $11 mill/yr off the backs of unpaid players, he should be the last person claiming it is all worth it.

Unpaid players? You mean the ones getting free tuition, room and board, meals and books? Those unpaid players?

Is that equal compensation commensurate to what they make their schools, combined with the risk of serious immediate injury (and long term damage)?
The time commitments for D1 college varsity sports has gotten out of hand. I played D1 college lacrosse 30 years ago and the time commitment was more like D3 is now. D1 is mornings in Fall and Spring in addition to regular practices in afternoon. It is out of balance. And that's not for a revenue generating sport.
he uses that argument but with his connections and parents why is he even playing football as individual with such intellectual bandwidth? Saban was hired to coach winning football teams, not produce Rhodes Scholars. Wonder if Rosen is up to date on concussions given his family background his top notch education, yet he enters a league in which the first thing he will encounter is "concussion".

Yes, those unpaid players, who are not allowed to work a side job for walking around money. Tuition, room & board is nothing compared to what many of those kids bring to power conference teams. Not to mention, not all players are scholly.

It's easy to do if your taking:
Art of Tuscaloosa
Cultural Literacy
Intro to Listening (music)
Motion Picture History
Actual Bama courses
