NFT: Equinox Gym NYC

Rover : 1/11/2018 8:00 am
Had a question in regards to gyms in NYC.
I’m usually at the gym 5 days a week, being in my early 30s, it is where I meet most people since I am not a drinker.
Anyway, I currently go to Lifetime Fitness but they are not close by to me in the city.
I’ve got my choice of 3 gyms nearby:
-92nd St Y
-NYSC
-Equinox

I’ve been told Equinox, if I can afford it, would be the place to go.
It’s pricey ($240 a month) but there is no initiation fee.
NYSC is only $90 but it got really bad reviews.
92nd Y I heard is more for elders.

I can splurge on the gym, since I go there so often, but just wanted to make sure I’m not being a sucker and if equinox really is worth it over NYSC/Y.
I've been a member of both

although we're talking about 1999 to 2012 here (roughly 10 yrs NYSC and 4 at Equinox). Equinox is a LOT nicer. Quieter, less wait times for things.. nicer equipment... much nicer bathrooms/spas.

But, from 2009-2012 anyway, i wasnt paying close to those rates for Equinox. I think it was $125 or so... company rate. I'm surprised you cant do better.

"Meeting people at the gym" is weird by the way.
I really enjoy Equinox

I actually pay less -- $175 a month -- but that is only for access to the location near my house.

I think the $240 is for a "passport" deal where you can go to different gyms.
You'll get what you pay for, Equinox is pricey

There's NYSC clubs all over, check out a few. They're typically a good deal in the city.
ive worked for both

Eq is much nicer, but less locs and ridic $. NYSC is run down but plenty locs and 1/3 the price (i belong). Also consider Blink which is owned by Eq but way less $ altho no loc on ues. I can answer any specific q you may have...

isnt weird at all. I cant tell you how many times I hooked up thru the gym...
I use NYSC, since my membership allows

me to use clubs throughout the northeast. Some clubs are better than others, but ones I've used in NYC have generally been pretty good, if a little on the small side. I complain about paying $80/mo, but $240? Wow. I'm not sure what the price difference would get you, other than the high price keeping people away, making it less crowded.
Rover Im guessing

you are in your 20s so Id say go with NYSC or Crunch. Eqx is an older wealthier crowd, 40s. If you like Botox on your women, thats the place lol
I go to Equinox Wall Street

Yes pricey at $175 decent place with good classes. Not too crowded at lunch and I think price keeps crowds out.
Equinox is by far the best in the area.
I've always been a little curious...

Regarding the breakdown of men and women at local gyms. What would you say is the percentage of women at the gym vs the percentage of men. I would say here in NJ, it's 53% men and 47% women. What about women over 49 1/2 years old?

Well, you worked there so its a little different. Or maybe you have the body of an adonis, i dont know nor care... just know thats not hudson haha.

Most girls hate being hit on while they're working out. Maybe its different when they're checking in or with their trainers who they've developed trust with.

Yeah that sounded bad - my bad. It was long before i was a trainer - i never mixed biz with plez - the Vertical club in the 80s in NYC was wild - leave it at that lol.
The gym is my hobby
Rover : 1/11/2018 1:12 pm : link
I am there 5-6 days a week, depending on the current program and I use a lot of free weights (Squat, DL, Push Press).
I haven't meet any girls at my current gym, but that's because it is a yuppie gym in the suburbs so most of the girls are kids or married.
But, friend wise, that's where I've met everybody since I've been there almost a decade.

Given it's my hobby, if it's really worth I can do it.
The NYSC by where I will be (3rd Ave UES) got horrible reviews (3.0) online.
Said it had no ac and poor ventilation, crammed in a basement.

i have worked out at that particluar branch many times. Its now listed as an elite NYSC club for which there is an extra fee. Its also surprisingly hardcore/urban at times. They have some nice pieces of equipment there and yes anywhere you go will seem cramped comp to the burbs
I'd try..
FatMan in Charlotte : 1/11/2018 1:47 pm : link
Average Joe's.

I heard their breakdown of fans is:

47% Giants
22% Jets
42% Penguins
38% Islanders
63% Rangers
1% Lynx

They don't add up to 100% because a lot of the schmucks there are fans of multiple teams, even within a sport

So it's worth a try?

I belong to the NYSC on 91st and 3rd
knicks3031 : 1/12/2018 1:38 pm : link
It's certainly not the best gym, but if you go at the right time it does the job. It gets VERY crowded at peak hours.

I've been to a couple of Equinox gyms in the city and it is by far a better gym in every single aspect. I just can't justify paying the price for it when I can get access to any NYSC for $25/month (corporate rate). If I had the disposable income and spent that much time at the gym, I would join Equinox without question.
Used to go to NY Health & Raquet
armstead98 : 1/12/2018 2:15 pm : link
I think it was about $100 per month and pretty nice.
