How would our cap look with Case Keenum in and Eli out?

Emlen'sGremlins : 1/11/2018 8:06 pm
With Shurmur being a finalist for the Giants head coach position and insisting on bringing his current starting QB with him wherever he goes, what would this mean to our cap situation in 2018 and beyond?
its not happening

Where do some of you people come up with this shit?? Cutting Eli results in a lot of dead cap room, so it isn't going to happen.

That’s not true at all.

Lmao why would shurmur do this? Jeez fuck that guy...he has to be dumb as shit. CK isn't THAT good. Dude acting like he carries Tom Brady around. Sorry but anyone insisting on keenum isn't qualified to coach my team lma

That’s ridiculous. He doesn’t have the track record to make those demands. Any GM worth his salt would simply say thank you for playing and as a consolation prize he is the home version of our TV game show and a year supply of rice a roni
He's not..

That's not at all accurate, but Keenum + the dead money on Eli's contract would be a tough hit. If they cut/trade Eli, it's because they're going young at QB (maybe with a cheap one-year bridge), not because they're going to flip over to a different full-price QB.
He’s not insisting

I do see Shurmur as a great fit with Mayfeild, who I want no part in at #2

That’s not true either. It was mentioned with Arizona because they don’t have a QB. And nowhere did it say that he demanded it.
Guys

Shurmur would be a fucking moron to tie keenum to his job status...it's not happening.

Seriously who would say I'll take the job making millions if you take my dogshit forever a backup QB and cut your veteran two time super bowl winner QB like get serious....Mara would be like...um see that wooden thing with the handle, ya walk through that ttyl
So, the new HC can have

Eli or Case Keenum and he'll chose Keenum?

That is grounds for moving to the next guy. I've been tough on Eli the past two years, too inconsistent in his play. But I'd rather have Eli.
don't Case Keenum and the Vikes have a say
bluepepper : 1/11/2018 8:43 pm : link
in where he plays next year? He's broken out in Minny, why would he want to leave? And wouldn't they want to keep him especially if they do some damage in the post-season? Sam Bradford just ain't very good and it's still doubtful whether Bridgewater is ever the same again.

Pretty sure cutting Eli now (not happening) results in $10M dead money and $10M in cap savings for 2018. Case Keenum made $2M last year. Who knows how much he gets in 2018?

It's a safe bet to say more than $10MM, at least in AAV terms.
If Keenum makes a deep run in the playoffs and possibly a SB

Word around the NFL agent circles is that Shurmur knocked the pants off of the Giants brass in his interview. He is seen as the favorite.

Did he really write that or are you just making shit up?
I have a feeling that Eli is taking a pay cut.

might help his 2019 cap hit somewhat, but his signing bonus is still prorated over the entire contract, and can't be reduced.

The candidate who made the biggest leap during the interview process in relation to where he may have stood before entering the room is Vikings offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur. A source says Shurmur's presentation opened some eyes, and what has previously been reported by several outlets appears to be accurate: he would like to bring pending free agent quarterback Case Keenum to whichever team he goes. That might not make the most sense for the Giants, who have the Eli Manning situation still to deal with, rookie quarterback Davis Webb entering Year 2 and the possibilities with the No. 2 overall pick.

Likely is the not the same thing as insisting
jeff57 : 1/12/2018 5:01 am : link
Or saying, if you want me you have to take Keenum.
If the Giants do move away from Eli
RetroJint : 1/12/2018 6:52 am : link
the most likely scenario would be a one-year patch, transition quarterback . I’m not sure what Keenum’s market will be. He will get more than a year, though . One year deals don’t fetch you very much unless you are in a tag situation like the Redskins were the last couple of seasons.

Everyone speaks of the “Giants way.” If Gettleman follows that hackneyed calculus, he will attempt to prop up Eli through an offense-heavy acquisition process that does not include drafting a quarterback . I dread that, but it is very possible . I’d prefer another 3-4 win season, if necessary, to accumulate more talent and remedy this thing instead of papering over it.

You do realize that Case Keenum is 29????
Brown Recluse : 1/12/2018 7:00 am : link
Why would the Giants scrap one QB in the twilight of his career in order to sign another QB just entering his?

Think about it.
Point being...
Brown Recluse : 1/12/2018 7:02 am : link
at his age, Keenum is not a long term solution.
Eli
Rong5611 : 1/12/2018 8:13 am : link
If he leaves, its to Jacksonville (Denver?) or someone who's a decent QB away from competing for the SB.

Perhaps there's a sign & trade deal negotiated that limits our cap hit that could be constructed.

To your last point, it is not possible. If another team wants to give Mara some extra cash to offset the expense of the remaining amortized signing bonus, I suppose it is possible, but Mara isn't hurting for cash. To mitigate the cap hit is not possible. The contract is what it is. A team can't transfer the cap hit to another team. They can't wish it away.

If Eli is traded before March 16, the dead cap hit is $12.4M. If Eli is traded after March 16, the dead cap hit is $17.4M. There is no way to ease the cap hit.
cap would look disastrous, offense might look worse.

Keenum just had his big "Ryan Fitzpatrick year". I doubt he has another. He may very well turn into pumpkin by Sunday.

I agree. He had a good year but its not as if he threw 40 TD passes. Now he's the hottest thing since sliced bread.

I think he is going to level off very soon.
...
christian : 1/12/2018 9:03 am : link
Keenum is not a guy you build a foundation around, but the market for good quarterbacks is still pretty rich.

He's perfect for a team decent qb play away from getting to the next level.

Minnesota, Jacksonville, Buffalo, and maybe Phill.
several articles on Eli's deal
NYG007 : 1/12/2018 10:21 am : link
Its a disaster. Only hope is he takes a pay cut (not a fake one where all the money backs us up into 2021). However, he is not going anyway due to the dead money hit. Its a min of 12.5 this year if they cut him and money next year.

Eli should take a paycut - no way his cap hit is worth 22.5 million. He is simply no where close to that level of pay for his play anymore.

oh stop with the cap hits

If Shurmur wants Keenum as his starter instead of Eli Manning then he should be fired form his current coaching job with the Vikings. He is not qualified to be a HC or OC. Kerry Collins was a better QB than Keenum.

If I had made over 200MM and I knew I was going to be replaced soon, I would have a decision- Do I want to help these people ? Re structure my deal so they can move along and win in future? OR Do I tell them - Give me my money - Good luck. We'll see who the real Eli is SOON

It's nice to tell others what they should do with their future earnings. You want Eli to play for $500K - $3.5M.

The KEY word there is "I". I don't care what Eli does. If he wants to be remembered as the "team first" guy he claims, then he restructures. If he wants to be the Give me my money guy - he doesn't. Then I cut/trade him.
