NFT: Favorite album of 2017?

Tony in Berlin : 1/12/2018 6:42 am
Haven't had a music thread in a while. What's your favorite album of 2017, in any category? The album I listened to the most last year was Grizzly Bear's "Painted Ruins". I highly recommend it - especially if you like Radiohead or similar alternative bands. Any other suggestions?
Painted Ruins - ( New Window )
I have a hard time picking between

Kendrick Lamar "Damn"

or

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit "The Nashville Sound"

Both very different, but both top to bottom great albums.

Singer songwriter/country-ish, my favorites were the Isbell album, John Moreland’s Big Bad Luv, and Tyler Childers’ Purgatory. Honorable mention to Colter Wall.

Hip Hop, Damn was my favorite.

I also listened to the War on Drugs album, Julien Baker’s album, and Moses Sumney’s album a ton.

Great CD from a fusion master. Unfortunately we lost both Larry and his favorite drummer Alphonse Mouson in the past year. Larry is joined by his son Julian on guitar, Randy Brecker on horns and John Lee on bass.

The CD has a little bit of everything, fusion, straight ahead jazz, funk, blues. The title song is the bomb.

Thought about the War in Drugs

but somehow, to me none of their albums have "it". They're all kind of nice to listen to.
Holy shit

I feel like a fossil, I looked at that list of top 100 albums and I recognized maybe 12 of the artists and have heard zero of the albums.

Listened a lot to these records that came out last year
trueblueinpw : 1/12/2018 9:52 am : link
Valerie June, The Order of Time
Margo Price, All American Made
LCD Soundsystem, American Dream
Arcade Fire, Everything Now
Miley Cyrus, Younger Now

I’m not sure any of these are destined to be truly “great” albums but I listened to these records a lot over the past year. LCD and AF were solid efforts but, especially with LCD, I was mostly excited about the idea of a new record and while I wouldn’t say the music disappointed I would say it wasn’t all great. Miley Cyrus’ Bangerz was, in my opinion, one of the best bubble gum pop albums in the past couple of decades. Younger Now is a very solid follow up and actually a relatively musical album. Valerie June is terrific and sings with emotion and wisdom (and disappointment) that only comes with age.

The KL Damn record must be pretty special as it was the top record of everyone from NPR to NME to pretty much everything in between.
not sure about Arcade Fire

I was ok with Reflektor, but Everything Now is just too sweet for my taste.
Mine was the new War on Drugs album
SimpleMan : 1/12/2018 10:47 am : link
"A Deeper Understanding."
I'm old and don't do albums much anymore
The Turk : 1/12/2018 10:54 am : link
but this is my list:

Jason Isbell & 400 Unit - Nashville Sound
Hurray for the Riff Raff The Navigator
Rhiannon Giddens Freedom Highway
St Vincent - Masseducation
Margo Price - All American made
also been listening to The war on Drugs record and Thundercat

Never imagined I'd see Deer Tick mentioned on BBI, let alone in an album of the year discussion! One of my favorite bands, Looking forward to the Stone Pony show. going with my wife, one of our first dates was a DT show at Stone Pony five years ago.

I was lucky enough to see DT early on. John played solo quite a bit in those days, when Baltimore was sort of an adopted home base for them. He played everything on their first album and later recruited the Ryan bros to tour. Got to know them and partied with them quite a bit in Baltimore and Philly, they'd put me and a few friends on the list which was really cool of them. John was a madman back in those days. He got married (to Vanessa Carlton, strange as that seems) and had a kid. I heard he sobered up too, which I was glad to hear. He really was a lunatic. Dennis Ryan is a sweetheart. A big goofball who's just friendly and fun to be around. I havent talked to them in quite awhile but those were some good times.

I saw Moreland open for Iron and Wine at Town Hall back in November, just a stripped down set, no full band. Guy blew me away. Definitely one of the best in that genre.
Freudian by Daniel Caesar is good

I also like Moses Sumney's album Aromanticism.

Benjamin Booker's album Witness is good too.

DAMN was awesome but got too much airtime.

Surprised 4:44 by Jay Z didn't get a mention here either. That had some good tracks.

And Frank Ocean put out some good singles. I hope he puts out another album faster than he did Blonde. That was tops for 2016 though.
Forgot to mention Flower Boy by Tyler, the Creator

He sobered up for a bit but now just tries to drink less. Had a few beers with him after the Pier 97 show in NYC last year.
