Who is out there to fill the assistant coaching positions?

idinkido : 1/12/2018 1:26 pm
If the talk is accurate that Patrica is the HC, then being basically a lifetime assistant under Bellichick, who has he ever worked with or knows well can he rely on for his assistant coaches? The head coach sets the tone and (with the GM) course of the team, but it is the assistants who work closely with the personnel. IMO, the HC should not work more with one unit over the others. His presence should be known on both sides of the ball. It is the job of the assistant coaches to make their facets work. I believe the Giants have been hurt in the past by some really crappy assistants. So, who is out there that can really help us and will want to coach here?

Alabama's OC, who was an assistant with NE for many years, could be his OC.

Simple!
If Patricia or McDaniels - bring back all the NE coaches who didn't succeed as head coaches, put them back at their normal coaching positions.
He can pull from the Pat's if it's a promotion

The LB coach is pretty well respected and has worked with Patricia for 9 years.
Brian Flores could be his DC

on the table if that's the route the Giants want to go with a guy like Patricia. Who knows what their thinking is, but you would think someone on his staff will be someone who Head Coached at some point...maybe.

He's staying with the Bears.
Pepper Johnson

Wonder if Pepper Johnson would be an option? They worked together before and we know Pepper Johnson wanted to rejoin the Giants. I think there was overlap with Snacks on the Jets when he coached the DL.

He needs a perfect lineup to be successful. Just about every year his defense sucks. I hated bringing him back.

We don't know who the coach will be.

At this point we need to hope we get one of the better coaches. We are no lock to land one of them.
John Fox
Milton : 1/13/2018 6:39 am : link
I think people forget what an outstanding DC he was for the Giants. And prior to becoming a DC, he had been a DB coach earlier in his coaching career. So he as experience as both a strategist and a teacher, not to mention the experience as a head coach that took two different teams to the Super Bowl.

Whether it's Patricia, Shurmur, or McDaniels, you couldn't ask for a better addition. If it's Patricia, having Fox as his DC will allow him to focus on being a head coach and would also give him an experienced former successful head coach to lean on. And if it's Shurmur or McDaniels, it would give him a defensive mind he can entrust the defense to while he focuses on rebuilding the offense.

Whoever the Giants choose as head coach, their choices for OC and DC will be equally important. This is especially true when considering the specific candidates involved: Patricia, Shurmur, McDaniels.

Fox has spent way too many years as a head coach and has been to 2 Superbowls. If he coaches again it's as a head coach.

This is not accurate. There are only two levels of coaches in NFL rules: head coach and assistant coach. You can't poach other teams' position coaches without their permission. Position coach to coordinator is not a promotion in terms of league rules.
I think when the Giants do pick the HC
idinkido : 1/14/2018 7:47 am : link
the deciding factor may very well be, the assistant coaches he can bring to the team. If no HC is appointed this coming week, then it's obvious that it's one whose team is still in the playoffs (hint: the Patriots).

I doubt that seriously. How does the HC candidate know who will apply for or accept an assistant position before hand. He may have an idea who he would like, but there is no way of knowing who will accept or even who is available?

up to play under that coach would not be discussed in the hiring practice? personally, I think management would want to know this and definitely would be discussed, especially how these assistants would be chosen.
Stop worrying so much
Joey in VA : 1/14/2018 6:27 pm : link
You don't have resumes from every coach in the NFL, it's not your job to worry about it or speculate on it since you and me and everyone here literally knows NOTHING about these guys. We hear names, he see teams play a certain way and we think we know something. We know jack and shit in regards to coaches in this league. Belichick is great, everyone else in a bowl and you can draw names and pretty much be fine.

experiences and sometimes we can talk about what we see as fans from what we have learned in life. We may not be football insiders but we are loyal to our teams and sometimes have good insights. Choosing good assistants, something I feel the Giants have lacked at times, can make and break a team.
