over New York"....
this Yahoo columnist gives two primary reasons - Detroit has more talent, especially at QB, and ownership (the Fords) is much more forgiving in Detroit...
"The old joke is that football isn’t rocket science, which is why it shouldn’t take a rocket scientist to make this selection. A history major would take New York. A calm, cool contemplation of the available data, assets and information, though, points to the Lions."
"A little better coaching, a little more talent, a little more of a winning attitude and the Lions are not just a playoff team but a team that (gasp) could actually win a game in the playoffs. Any coach who delivers that – and just that – will be a hero in Detroit, where even moderate success is desperately sought. They’ve won nothing since 1992.
In New York, you need to reach Super Bowls, if not win them, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but sure feels a long way off and a long road to travel for a rookie coach."
"Look, the Giants are one of the most storied and iconic franchises in the NFL. New York is the biggest, most dynamic and exciting city in America.
The Lions are a forgettable laughingstock. The City of Detroit is admirably bootstrapping itself back to respectability but there remains a long way to go.
On reputation alone, this is simple. You run to New York and try to become the next Bill Parcells or Tom Coughlin.
Matt Patricia is an engineer, though, a self-described technology-geek who still favors the old-school pencil because of its reliability. He’s like nothing the NFL coaching world has ever seen.
Which is why he ought to solve an equation in a way no one in the NFL has ever before: Detroit & gt; New York."

hes the best lions coach in the super bowl era. Agree this is horseshit
I mean they did thoroughly kick our ass before we were injury riddled.
sarcasm?
Exactly. I imagine a guy who gave up a career as a rocket scientist to coach football has higher goals than being a mediocre coach in Detroit just because of the job security and losing culture.
of course, there they are admitting it is unthinkable in the title...
They would have if not for horrendous officiating against Dallas.
He isn't the problem there. He had a fantastic season.
Anyone believe if McAdoo had equaled Caldwell's success in Detroit in NY that Mara would have fired him?
IF the world worked that way we'd still be living in caves. More often than not the highly touted and highly successful HC candidate is going to take the bigger job.
Great article--except it should be written about someone who doesn't want to make a difference.
The Lions aren't bad. Fun little team. I'd rather coach the Giants and wind up revered as a legend.
Marvin Jones Jr, is there number 1, Tate is their slot guy. Their offensive talent isn’t bad, Ebron started to develop some, and Golladay looks like a nice compliment on the outside with his size to Tate and Marvin Jones.
Their RBs are just meh with Abdullah and Riddick, but not terrible. The oline run blocking this year was horrendous.
Defense has some nice pieces, this really depends how you feel about Stafford, but I think there closer to making the playoffs than the Giants are by a lot.
Caldwell mainly lost his job cause team no showed on the road too much this year. The Ravens and Bengals games were horrible in particular. I don’t think their division is impossible either, Rodgers is good but as we saw rest of that team is bad especially defensively, Bears nuff said, and Vikes could be a one hit wonder they got a lot of important pieces that are going to be UFA can’t keep em all.
Long term I’d say Giants but for next season it’s definitly Lions better job if you want to get off to a good start and have a little margin for error. Just now I look at it.

Detroit has one of the game's best corners - Darius Slay. And Diggs and Quin round out a very good secondary. Arguably the best in the game. And they have one of the games best pass rushers - Ezekial Ansah. Anthony Zettel is one of the games best interior pass rushers as well.
Jones and Tate were 1K receivers. Tate is one of the best slot receivers in the game.
I think you are understating the quality of talent Detroit has...actually...
This is despite having Barry Sanders, Calvin Johnson, Ndamukong Suh and a franchise QB
Thats not by accident. Its not the talent. Its the organization.
Well, don't they?

Incorrect. While Tate plays primarily in the slot, he's absolutely their #1 optoin in the passing game. It's not even a debate.
If Lil Bill, outside the GY anger, likes our organization vs. just wanting to HC us in a homecoming of sorts, he might steer MP here as well.
Every leader wants to build his group in 'his vision', and if the 'went well' is about as stated above, a team with a veteran QB, possibly his replacement in the next year or 2, a new OL in that timeframe, and possibly a new 3-4 D, there will be lots of new players he can help get here and with a GM that likely will work with him to get, both FA and Draft. Lots of opportunities over what Detroit might consider as a team that can make a run vs our need to rebuild.
If he wants opportunities for more instant success, he goes to Detroit.
Not my favorite candidate, but if he brings the Pats analytics with him, that's fine.
Makes the South Bronx back in the day look like a gated community
Take the Gints job
But Bob Quinn is the GM for Detroit. So he and Patricia may have a very good relationship from their days in New England.
Relationships matter...
Huh?
