The Giants management have always judged themselves by their opponents in the NFC East and I think if you look back you can see that the Giants have mostly thrived with this.
The Giants most recent Super Bowls came in 2007 and 2011. However, the decisions that led to those Super Bowl Championships were made after the 2003 season when they fired Jim Fassel, hired Tom Coughlin and drafted Eli Manning and Chris Snee and released Kerry Collins. The Eagles at that point were in the midst of the run to 4 NFC Championship games.
In 2004 the Eagles went to the Super Bowl and the Giants had one of their greatest offseason ever. They spent a mini-fortune to bring in Plaxico Burgess, Antonio Pierce and Kareem McKenzie. They nailed all 3 acquisitions and huge pieces in the first Super Bowl. They had an incredible draft despite having limited picks (only 4) from the Manning deal. They hit on Corey Webster, Justin Tuck and Brandon Jacobs. Again, 3 huge pieces of the SB run. IMO, this was the offseason where the Giants won a Super Bowl. They were like a team possessed.
In addition, it would be Nick Foles leading that championship run and not Carson Wentz. This would likely result in a dreaded QB controversy. As the Giants found out with Jeff Hostetler and Phil Simms, this is not so easily resolved. Obviously Carson Wentz is the far superior player but he would be reintegrating back to the team, coming off a serious injury and teams develop loyalties to the person who won especially in a situation where this would be Phillys first SB.
Most teams that do win only win Super Bowl. Seattle, Green Bay, Néw Orleans, Indianapolis, etc. It is very hard to win more than one no matter how well stacked they may seem. Only the Patriots, Giants and Steelers have bucked this trend recently. This would likely be Philadelphia’s only Super Bowl.
As painful as it would be to see Philadelphia win the Super Bowl, it is not about te present but the future. It matters not on the current state of affairs. There is no harm that comes from this seasons Eagles win or lose. But a Philly win could motivate the Giants management, cause Eagles QB controversy and they will probably not win again.
