NFT: Converting Chrome to Brushed Nickel fixtures - success?

DC Gmen Fan : 1/14/2018 10:30 am
Want to get some brushed nickel faucets for our bathroom but the shower door is chrome as are some other fixtures. Rather than buy all new shower door etc to match, has anyone had success painting chrome (or bare metal finish) to polished nickel? I know there are some spray paints, and I'm guessing some sanding/priming/painting would be the process but I'm just curious if anyone has tried it.

Thanks as always

Recently redid our bathroom with brushed nickel fixtures: faucets, light fixture, towel bars, etc. Also have shower doors with chrome/stainless trim. Decided just to live with it. Doesn’t really clash like oil rubbed bronze would.

If you want to do it, here’s the basic steps to take.

1) Clean everything REALLY well. You need to get all the soap scum and everything off. CLR, vinegar should do it.

2) Sand with medium grit sandpaper to remove gloss and help provide adherence.

3) Tape everything off really well with painters tape and plastic.

4) Apply a metal primer.

5) Apply an exterior metal paint with rust inhibitor. You want an exterior paint in a wet setting IMO.

Good luck if you choose to tackle it.
Thanks as always Jim

I didn't even consider an outdoor rust preventing primer.

Yeah, maybe I’ll go back and do it

Thing is, while I’m good with a brush and roller, I haven’t done much spray painting. Afraid I’ll make a mess of it.
I like the old fashioned brush/roller

plus i'm too cheap to buy a sprayer I will likely only use a couple times.
Spray Paint

I just did a bunch of similar stuff recently. My wife liked 'champagne bronze' faucet and door handles for our kitchen but getting a bunch of similar stuff in that color (ie dish rack) was difficult.

Rust-Oleum makes a decent waterproof spray paint and I've had pretty good success with it. You may also want to use their spray primer too.

With the spray paint, just do it outside or some place that's well ventilated and you'll want to do about 4-5 real light coats. The trick is to just keep your hand moving the whole time. If you see that you missed a spot don't worry about it, just wait till it dries (usually in an hour or so) and go over it again. Take your time ... Patience is key
Can't really do it outside -

shower tracks are fixed and I dont want to take on removing them. I'll just tape/mask everything, wear a respirator and keep the windows open and the fan on

Not very practical. You’d have to disassemble everything including all the framing and trim from the doors. Will it all go back together? Will the seals still be good once you’ve taken everything apart? I’m dubious.
