NFT: RIP racing great Dan Gurney

Defenderdawg : 1/14/2018 8:46 pm
“Dan Gurney, the first driver to win in Formula One, IndyCar and NASCAR, died Sunday of complications from pneumonia. He was 86. Gurney began racing in 1955 and won in nearly every racing series he attempted. He drove for Ferrari, BRM, Porsche and Brabham in Formula One, then formed his own team. He won the Belgian Grand Prix in 1967 in his own car, the first and only time an American won an F1 race in a car of his own design.

Gurney teamed with A.J. Foyt that year to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans in a Ford GT40, and he's often credited with starting the tradition of spraying the champagne from the podium at that race.“

“In a four week stretch of summer of 1967, Dan Gurney started on the front row of the Indy 500, won the 24 Hours of Le Mans (and invented the champagne spray) and then won the Belgian Grand Prix in a car he designed.”

Dan Gurney was one of the lucky ones to emerge unscathed from a very dangerous period of racing. Jim Clark considered Gurney his greatest competition. RIP All American Eagle.
Gurney was among a handful of great driver/engineers

Aside from being a marvelous human being, Gurney was -- along with Bruce McLaren, Jim Hall, Jack Brabham and Don Garlits -- one of the very few great driver/racecar builders. His Eagle racecars' successes exceeded Gurney's record as a driver.

There never be another sportsman like Dan Gurney.

I have a nice diecast replica of that 1967 Eagle

Weslake in my den. The man was no-bullshit whether driving a race car or owning a race team. Never heard anybody in the sport utter a solitary critical word with regard to the man. An American sporting legend to be sure.
