NFT: Beyond Meat

Giantimistic : 1/14/2018 10:05 pm
Wow! Has anyone else tried the Beyond Meat burger. I tried it for the first time and was blown away with how much it actually resembled and tasted like a real hamburger.

I have been eating a mostly plant based diet as a way to drop my cholesterol and have tried some of the fake meat and cheese products--they have improved a lot over the years. For the most part I stay away but do enjoy some brands like field roast and there are some really good cashew and almond milk cheeses as well.

I have eaten my fair share of amazing burgers and meat in NY and New England over the years. I do miss eating it at times but for the most part I don't. Every now and then I get a craving still for meat, but when I eat a little it doesn't sit well anymore. I do enjoy some veggie burgers dressed up a lot, but the beyond meat burger was at a whole other level. I have tried some of the brand's other products but this one was unbelievable and I could really see it down the road being more mainstream.
Beyond Meat, Impossible Burger...

...make it harder to justify eating meat for taste reasons at least.
I had them about a year ago.

Very good. Hardest part is finding a store that sells them. One of the founders also founded Honest Tea.
Just curious

Just based on a cursory search, it looks like it costs about twice as much, give or take, than really good beef. Now can they justify that?
Cultured meat is building steam

Looking forward to being able to eat meat without the ethical concerns.

Not so much looking forward to dealing with dopes who think raising an animal for slaughter makes for a tastier burger.
Not cheap
Giantimistic : 1/15/2018 1:14 am : link
I think the ultimate goal will be for something like this to be cheaper than meat but until the demand increases it will be more expensive. Almost how organic food used to be almost double until it became in such high demand.

I also think overtime there may be an increase in the price of meat due to the resources necessary to produce it. This company sees itself as a potential for mass market. I think it would be easy to replace chicken nuggets with a plant based substitute without many people knowing. This burger tasted more like a real burger than McDonalds does!

A lot of big names have invested in products like these with the thought of them being mainstreamed in the future. I find it all very interesting. I didn't head toward being largely vegan for ethical reasons--I still eat fish and eggs--but after watching some of "those" documentaries on the food industry, I can say I feel better about my food choices.
Thanks for Posting This

I had no idea this product even existed.

Looks like it might be available at a Tampa Whole Foods, so I'll give it a try.

They are sold in

BurgerFI's. So if you have a BurgerFI in your area you can order a Beyond Burger. Awesome.

Whole Foods sells them like crazy and its cheaper to buy them from there and make them yourself obviously.

Beyond Meat is also reporting that they are coming out with a line of sausages this spring. If they are as good as the Beyond Burger there really is no reason to want to eat meat. They are made from plant protein as opposed to soy like in other veggie burgers.

As long as they don't contain Soy I'm down to try it
DennyInDenville : 1/15/2018 12:13 pm : link
Wouldn't wanna end up as a soy boy

Hopefully this changes the game..

However the del friscos steaks of the world will never be replaced.

one of their spokespeople which is a huge red flag. He believes the Earth could be flat, dinosaurs didn't exist, and The Illuminati are taunting us through Taco Bell commercials (none of this is a joke.)
I just bought

The burgers and chicken at Whole Foods based on this thread. I'll give them a try.
Is this petry dish meat?
idiotsavant : 1/15/2018 3:31 pm : link
Disgusting.

Decaf... Splenda.
I've made them, I think they're pretty good.

Not as much as a real beef burger (at least a good one), but they're certainly legitimate burgers, pretty juicy and you can get a decent sear on them. For anyone who likes them, you can pretty much always get a coupon for $1 off on their website.

The Burger is definitely very processed and not necessarily the healthiest but I imagine this is all necessary to create something that is meat like and aimed at meat eaters as well as vegetarians. My wife liked it but was a little put off at first because of how meat like the texture was.

The ingredients are: Pea Protein Isolate, Expeller Pressed Canola Oil, Refined Coconut Oil, Water, Yeast Extract, Maltodextrin, Natural Flavors, Gum Arabic, Sunflower Oil, Salt, Succinic Acid, Acetic Acid, Non-GMO Modified Food Starch, Cellulose From Bamboo, Methylcellulose, Potato Starch, Beet Juice Extract (for color), Ascorbic Acid (to maintain color), Annatto Extract (for color), Citrus Fruit Extract (to maintain quality), Vegetable Glycerin.

Definitely some interesting science going on but not petry dish stuff.
We came across this at a street festival

The samples tasted great, had a meat texture, etc. But, they wouldn't or couldn't say what they were made of and had no literature/packaging to view. When we got home and looked it up, we passed. As mentioned, it is still very processed.

I thought the chicken strips were pretty good as well but not as realistic as the burger. You have to cook it very carefully-as the instructing say. I actually like the gardein crispy tenders better.

I am amazed where all the food engineering is heading. Some of it is disgusting. It almost all used to be inedible, but in the last few years the advances have been impressive. There are somethings I have found that I even prefer to the real stuff.
