is a good article, but I have to admit the emphasis on footwork is reminiscent of McAdoo (WCO thing). Good news is that Eli and Webb will already be familiar with the concepts.
agreed. my biggest takeaway was that he is open minded and does what fits his players. he isnt a do whst your told type coach and thats good. you meed to be able to adjust and scheme to players you have on roster
“He’s a guy where, if you don’t like something, just tell him,” Stefon Diggs said. “Not just, ‘I don’t like this or that,’ but tell him why you don’t like it. If it’s not something that seems fit for everybody, that we aren’t going to do it. You want everybody to be comfortable because it won’t work if we’re on a different page. The open lines of communication keeps everyone on the same page, no surprises out there.”
“It’s not the plays, it’s the players,” Shurmur added. ”We say that behind the scenes frequently. ‘What does Diggs do well? What does Adam do well? How do we get the ball to Kyle?’ We need to do a better job of that.”
What caught my eye was the comment about great West Coast offenses having multi-faceted running backs.
So does Schurmer decide Webb can run things and lobby for Saquon Barkley? Or does he go after someone mobile like Mayfield, whom Mara/Gettleman might oppose?
Historically speaking, the great West Coast offenses have had top-notch, all-purpose running backs. Walsh had Roger Craig, Mike Shanahan had Terrell Davis, Andy Reid has had Brian Westbrook, LeSean McCoy and Jamaal Charles.
Now Shurmur has Dalvin Cook.
After three games, Cook is No. 2 in the NFL in rushing behind Andy Reid’s running back Kareem Hunt. He also grabbed five passes for 72 yards vs. the Bucs, including one seven-yard reception where Cook lined up as a wide receiver.
GM Rick Spielman traded up in the draft to pick Cook ...
and coaching philosophy that I ever recall hearing from McAdoo. Maybe I'm reading too much into it but there seems a willingness to adapt to personnel as well as opposing defenses. Encouraging. As an aside, his uncle Fritz Shurmur's Rams' defenses used to kill us back in the day.

HC, wouldn't that be a switch! It's not the plays it's the players

Saquon Barkley at #2 ???
He obviously fits that complete back.
After reading this I could see them sticking with Eli for 2 more years and moving to Webb. They are that smart and film room QB's that Shurmur likes.

Agreed!
Schurmer's ability to develop QBs who are less than the top 3 out of college (Keenum was undrafted) could just as well signal that Gettleman and Mara are NOT intending to go for QB at number 2 and instead are either planning to trade down and get a QB in a later round or will simply use #2 for BPA.
In either of those two scenarios getting the most out of Eli, Webb and a lower round QB in 2018 will be critical.
BTW, even though he is not "spectacular", Gallman showed at Clemson that he is multi-faceted.
