Did Shurmur call the plays in Cleveland?

Sean : 1/15/2018 5:56 pm
Personally, I don’t like the HC calling the plays although it works for many. The optics of McAdoo having a diner menu in his face was awful. I much prefer the HC managing the game & seeing everything while delegating playcalling to his coordinators. We’ll see what Shurmur does.

that putz McAdoo, Shurmur calls a great game.
I researched this

Shurmur called the plays in his first year and he then hired Brad Childress as OC in year 2 who called the plays

HC I would advocate him having an OC. Wasn't Jim Zorn, HC, Oc, and QB coach? If my memory serves me, I think he had other duties while being a HCand remember thinking he should stick to just being only a HC.
Head Coach calling plays

works for some guys (Payton, McCarthy, Reid) while some guys are in over their head (like McAdoo). I don't think we should worry about Shurmur because of McAdoo's failures.

Play-calling is one of Shurmur's top strengths as an OC so it will be interested if he continues to do so as a HC.
A lot of people asked about Shurmur in Philly

Here is an article I found on how Philly called plays. It was very complex and it seems as though Shurmur did.

I think we hire an OC here under Shurmur with play calling

Here’s what he said upon hiring Childress

“More than anything, I think what it will do is allow me to just step back and look down on some things in some areas that I may be able to contribute more,” Shurmur said. “I think that’s a key piece. Keep in mind this: As the head coach of this team, I want to direct a team that is winning games. I have a general philosophy of how that works. You tweak it to do what fits best based on those principles to win games. I think that’s just natural that you have an offensive coordinator.”

If there's an OC available who he has confidence in,

he'll probably delegate that. If not, delegating may wait until he gets the right guy.

Brad Childress. Jeez, there's a name I've haven't heard in years. Whatever happened to him?
Childress retired

Shurmur had Jauron as his DC in Cleveland who has also retired.
I really hope he delegates play calling

to a very capable and talented OC. I like for a head coach to take a bigger view than the in-game play calling. It is a positive indication that he delegated this in year 2 in Cleveland.

As someone posted above, it might take a year for him to find the right play-caller, but this whole team will be rebuilding for at least a year.
