We sucked this year but damn if these aren't exciting times

montanagiant : 1/16/2018 12:53 am
New GM
New Coach (thank God after that debacle)
New coordinators
New philosophy in all regards
#2 Draft Pick
Low draft picks in the other rounds
Upcoming Free Agency
Good players coming back from injuries

This has to be one of the more exciting offseasons since 2004. We have 6 months of offseason No more making excuses for a piss poor O-Line, no more decisions based on if they save someone's job instead it's all predicated on rebuilding the Giants into a competitive team. This is a year that dictates this teams future and damn if that's not exciting

but part of me is afraid that they'll do something inexplicably dumb, like insisting that the coach keep Quinn around.

I actually am quite the opposite and not excited at all. I think this team has a long ways to go, if they can do what Philly did and turn this thing around quickly...sure. I think we are in for some dark days ahead of us.

I mean of course I don't know exactly what will happen but I have a feeling this is going to start a long reign of terror swinging to the Philadelphia Eagle's favor. Even if they lose to Minnesota, Wentz is still going to be a major pain in the ass and its not like JPP is the answer to put pressure on him, lol.

Also yes, this past season dragging the fuck on drained me. I was sick of this football team by the second week. I'm sure they'll take a QB in the draft with the #2 pick but meh, maybe I'm just getting older or losing interest in the NFL for various reasons.
Browns fans must be excited all the time

I will get excited if I see BBI getting more positive like you seem to
wgenesis123 : 1/16/2018 4:23 am : link
be. That is not very likely to happen. As to Carson Wentz and the Eagles, well RG3 seemed like the real deal before the knee injury. Of course Tom Brady seemed like the real deal before the knee injury so who knows what will happen there. Getting back to the OP, I will get excited when the Giants trade down and still get their guy for the future. What I really want for Christmas is an O-line that people talk about for all the right reasons.
I'd prefer boring times...

Lol even without Wentz, the Eagles seem to be doing just fine.

I hope Gettleman gets it right and finds a way to mold a team who can beat Philly. What the hell am I thinking? the Giants couldn't even beat Philly when they were mediocre and didn't win a playoff game for nearly 10 seasons. Fuck me for being not so thrilled that a division rival found their QB. The Giants haven't swept them since 2007.

But hey, we're picking #2! Am I excited for next season? Far from it...
I don’t see how you cannot be excited.......
Reb8thVA : 1/16/2018 6:54 am : link
We sucked for the last five years and without any changes were on a sinking ship to nowhere. A new GM and a new coach may not turn everything around in one season, but they might, and that hope should generate some excitement. One thing is for sure, no changes would have been unbearable.
I'm excited because the new GM seems to understand
JCin332 : 1/16/2018 7:08 am : link
that winning football is still predicated on winning at the point of attack on both sides of the ball and running it...

I guess so, long ways to go before free agency, the draft start I guess is what I mean...and again, Philly is good. Just doesn't look like they're going anywhere either.

As I stated previously, I feel brain dead from the nonsense we just got through this past season. Allow me SOME time to recover and gather up all the horse shit I saw, and collect myself.

(Also maybe not getting excited for this season will help, unlike getting excited for last year with the "big hopes")

Hope that works...

The doom & gloom is tiring. The Giants kept on Reese to work with another HC since Coughlin was already here when hired. Also, with the way so many games were lost in 2015, it wasn’t an outrageous decision.

The Giants hired McAdoo FOR ELI. Eli wanted him & out of their desire for continuity and pleasing their QB, they hired him. It was the wrong decision. It happens.

In order for the changes to happen which needed done, this team needed to bottom out. Teams go worst to first all the time (Rams & the Jags are in the AFC title game). No reason not to be excited.
If Eric earned money for every post...

I think the excitement will probably kick in after the season for me when the changes really start happening. It will be a busy offseason for sure though.

My real question is how do you not live in Montana? All this time, I thought you were living in the Rockies under the big sky. Maybe that would explain your optimism. Then I read in a thread yesterday that you lived in (I think it was) Minnesota? What?

So, are you a big Joe Montana fan--or maybe a Hannah Montana fan? Does your family have a ranch out west? You big into hiking? Skiing? Fly fishing?

I agree.

As to Mara being predictable, I think once a fan develops a perception about something, any moves made by the team will be seen as fitting into that stereotype.

Every team has a way of doing business, so to that extent they are all predictable.

Giants have been pretty successful so not sure what the problem is with their way of doing business

At the end of last week, nearly everyone was saying Patricia or McD was the next coach.

Now, people are making it seem like we targeted Shurmur from day 1 and he's a predictable choice.

It is almost like Mara gets blamed for shit that's just fake.
Yet you responded to it Gatorade

the criticism of Mara being predictable in all of this is completely and utterly justified. Lots of folks here said that Mara would probably go with the safe, boring choice as HC, and would not make a bold move. And that's exactly what happened. He hired the guy that has been around the league for a long time and is considered by some as a retread coach. Whether you agree with that or not is your call, but its the opinion of a lot of smart posters on this board.

Only on BBI does hiring the best candidate in the pool result in criticism.

Shurmur was the "best candidate"...that's your opinion. And yes, we are allowed to criticize the process or the hire.

mikeinbloomfield : 1/16/2018 10:30 am : link
The Giants needed a clean sweep, and we got it. The question is if the new regime is better than the old one. You can say there's only one way to go from 2-14, but that's not necessarily the case. I like the Gettleman hire, but let's see.

In my opinion, the Giants are not one or two players away. We have literally no depth at most positions. As far as starters, I'd say they need help at
OL -- goes without saying, particularly at T
LB -- a bunch of JAGs when they are healthy
CB -- DRC is getting old, Apple's a headcase and let's not forget Jenkins got suspended for one game too.
DE -- JPP is good for one game, then disappears. Vernon is as advertised, a good two way player that for some reason can't get sacks.

Lots of rebuilding to do.

Indeed they are. “I am the hunted one,” no longer. Now they are the chase. Might take awhile, but it seems they have good men in place to turn this around. Cowboys did it in one off-season after ‘15. I hope the Giants do the same.

When I first joined BBI years back I was living in Montana. In 2002 I moved by southern Minnesota because I had to be centrally located for my business. Sorry for the confusion

He graduated from UM in Missoula last year. He loves it and is staying, at least for the time being. You're right about the countryside. As an east-coast girl, I had no idea how breathtaking it is out there. We'll probably be out for a visit in May, so I'll hit you up for recommendations about things we should do/see later in the spring (after the draft, of course).

Oh, don't get me wrong, I like the Gettleman/Shurmer potential, but it was the safe thing to do. And smart. Exciting? Not the least bit. I knew once they tapped EA to be the consultant for a new GM, I thought to myself "same ol' Maras". But just because these aren't "sexy moves", doesn't mean they are bad moves. Mara ain't no Roy "Tin Cup" McAvoy - going for the green instead of laying up.
