Bill Polian

said on Golic and Wingo this am that Shurmur is an excellent hire, extremely intelligent, smart, good family man. Has known him for 25 years.

I respect Polian's opinion.

What's he going to say about someone he's known for 25 years?

Pat Shurmur will need to lighten up as Giants head coach, says ex-Browns boss Mike Holmgren - ( New Window )

Shurmur hasn't even signed his contract yet and Gary Myers is already up to his usual shit.

He's probably pissed because he got it wrong. That said, Holmgren was more blunt than you would expect.

I mean Holmgren doesn't want to take responsibility for his own mistakes, of course he is going to throw Shurmur under the bus.
Giants have won Super Bowls with coaches who are a pain in the ass

Did I read that right??
BillKo : 1/16/2018 9:53 am : link
Holmgren is critiquing Shurmer but then actually left half way thru the second season?

LOL...what was his reason for leaving?
These are the quotes that stand out to me
Dr. D : 1/16/2018 9:53 am : link
“I believe the players in Cleveland respected him,” Holmgren said. “He came off like a hard ass all the time. Very stern...

"He has a toughness that gains the players respect. If anything, I would like to see him ease off that a little bit."

So, Holmgren's "concern" is that he's too much of a hard ass all the time and should ease off a little?

I'm ok with that.

Holmgren? That was the year Browns ownership changed midseason. Haslam wanted to install his own guy. Joe Banner.
you read that article...
BillKo : 1/16/2018 9:56 am : link
but on the telecast they quoted the Minny QB as saying Shurmer is the "most easy going coach he's ever been around"............

So go figure.

Being the OC is a lot easier of a burden than being the HC. He probably felt in his first go around as a head coach that he needed to be a tough guy.
so maybe he took Holmgren's advice
Dr. D : 1/16/2018 9:58 am : link
and eased up on the hard assness?

Just want you want in a head coach in the NFL.

I like the pick.
He doesn't seem like a hard ass with the Viking players.

I could be wrong but he seems pretty laid back with them.

Sounds like Salt from Holmgren.
bLiTz 2k : 1/16/2018 10:06 am : link
He was largely responsible for the lack of talent on those Cleveland teams, but what do I know.

Also, same as McDaniels, you hope the learning experience being the main guy will pave the way for him to have learned from his mistakes the first time around.

PaulN : 1/16/2018 10:26 am : link
These are the type of things that a good coach can correct and learn from. It happened to Bill Walsh, Parcells, Landry, Belechick and Lombardi. As an offensive coordinator for the Giants, the players were laughing at Lombardi over his little habits he had, and it bothered him a lot when they started to play practical jokes on him, he then called Frank Gifford and Charlie Connerly into the office to ask them what he is doing wrong. Smart people learn from their mistakes. Sometimes it takes them a few seasons, sometimes a few games, but it happens to the BEST of us all.
Anyone here on BBI
blueblood : 1/16/2018 10:30 am : link
learn, change and grow from life and its experiences? yeah im sure you have.. Ill bet Shurmur has too.
Regarding Holmgren's critique,
an_idol_mind : 1/16/2018 10:36 am : link
I'm sure Shurmur has learned from his time in Cleveland and will make adjustments as he steps into his new gig. I also have more faith in a hard ass coach, myself.

The info about him paying attention to what the media says is worrying, and I hope he tunes those guys out in New York. If he doesn't, he probably won't last long.
Is this the same Mike Holmgren....
paesan98 : 1/16/2018 11:55 am : link
That stacked Cleveland's roster with all-pros for Shurmur to work with? Maybe Haslam wanted his own guy because Holmgren did such a "wonderful" job as GM.

Shurmur was the HC in 2011 and 2012, looking back at those two drafts by Cleveland (done by Holmgreen) for what they were compared to what they could have been, it shows you exactly why he had no chance to succeed. Trade out of Julio Jones one year and Trade up for Trent Richardson the next..

arcarsenal : 1/16/2018 2:35 pm : link
Holmgren had a pretty big hand in Shurmur failing in Cleveland, so he should probably take a step back.

He sounds like a guy who doesn't want to accept his own role or the fact that he was behind the shitty rosters on the field or the poor roster decisions made.
Holmgren...
Chris in Philly : 1/16/2018 2:40 pm : link
pushing Shurmur under the bus for his own shitty job in Cleveland. Fuck that guy...

That was telling. Holmgren does not actually like Shurmur regardless of what he says. If one of my friends got a great new job, I would say nicer things.
I like Polian
pjcas18 : 1/16/2018 2:48 pm : link
or liked him when he wasn't a fossil (in football yeas), for talent acquisition. He's 75 now so not sure he's got all his faculties (no offense), so I'd take his comments today with a grain of salt.

I believe he's the GM to win the SB in the FA era with the most drafted/originally signed players.

in 2006 the Colts won the SB with 21 out of 22 starters either drafted or (made their NFL debut) with the Colts under Polian. the one exception was Booger McFarland.

that's pretty amazing IMO.
