Draft Day the movie

NYG27 : 1/16/2018 9:57 am
Over the holiday weekend with time to waste, I finally checked out the movie Draft Day.

I guess for a casual fan or someone not into football, it was an OK movie (65% on rotten tomatoes) but the crazy draft day trades really ruined it for me. Spoilers ahead for anyone who hasn't seen the movie yet.

First, the Browns GM (Kevin Costner) trades the 7th overall pick and two future first round picks to the Seahawks first overall pick. This was not bad and aligns with current trades for teams moving up to get a QB.

The Browns GM then bypasses the top rated QB and drafts a Linebacker first overall. Then, in an effort to move back into the top of the first round, the draft values ruined the rest of the movie for me.

The Browns GM calls a rookie Jaguars GM about trading his 6th overall pick. In the movies attempt to showcase "How great a GM" Costner's character is, he offers Jacksonville just three second round picks straight up for the 6th overall pick.

Then to cap off the movie, Browns GM calls the Seahawks again to see if they want that QB. Then in the process to move up just ONE spot from 7th overall to 6th overall, not only do the Browns get back all three of their first round picks but they also get Seattle to thrown in a Pro Bowl caliber kick returner as well.

So in essence, the Browns traded 3 second round picks for the first overall pick in the draft and a Pro Bowl caliber kick returner???

LOL....I know it's just a movie but those unrealistic trade values ruined the film for me. Anyone else seen the film and felt the same way?
you are missing the context though

its been a while since I saw it but wasn't the whole point of him getting it cheap because the Seattle GM was on the verge of being fired if he didn't get his QB?

I agree that it was stupid, but he got it cheap for a reason.
Agreed

The movie was already lame enough, but if it had least portrayed the draft process realistically it would've had some redeeming entertainment value.
On top of that

The LB wasn’t supposed to go until mid to late first round. So by drafting him number 1, you are paying slot for the top pick. Which means (if we are going by real NFL), that would make him one of the top paid LB’s in the league.

Obviously just a movie, but to make a trade like that for #1 overall, you are not doing it for a LB
he had a relationship with the player

as well as the injured QB. I get critiquing the trades, but the movie's plot was why he did what he did.

Entertaining but dumb movie.

Why do people read into movies
superspynyg : 1/16/2018 10:10 am : link
so much and look for every little detail?

I bet you pulled out the draft chart to see if the trade values matched up.

If a movie entertains you its good. The movie is not about the trades its about his relationships with his gf, coworkers owner and his father and how he is struggling to find his place and put his mark on his career.

The fact that it revolves around the draft just gives it a new forum for the story.

I bet when you watched star wars you said there is no way one shot could destroy the entire death star. This movie sucks.

Wasn't a little detail. The trades were central to the movie. And were ridiculous. But I enjoyed it anyway.
critiquing the trades is fine
UConn4523 : 1/16/2018 10:12 am : link
but there was non-tangible reasons why they were done which answers why it was highway robbery.

I get it, but basically the NFL endorsed the movie and it was like one long commercial with the logo popping up every few minutes. I just thought it would have been more realistic. Shit the NFL sues everyone they can for copyright infringement, to attach their brand to this is laughable.
Feel the same way whenever there's a poker hand in a movie

They could at least make it realistic. Full houses and quads and straight flushes... it's more a pet peeve than something that really ruins a movie though.
Stop being a pancake eating mother fucker

Nobody ever claimed that the trades were realistic. Jacksonville's GM was portrayed as some incompetent rookie. I find it hard to believe, absent a draft like Cedric Jones, why a team would only have 2 names available. Not to mention, with Bo Callaghan dropping why didn't any other team bother to scoop him up? If he was that much of a consensus #1 some other team in the Top 5 would have taken him. Even when you had Aaron Rodgers, he was never the unanimous top QB, let alone top pick coming out.
The problem is this...

The trade in which he gave up three 2nd round picks for the sixth overall pick was the protagonist's heroic moment. If it was only a minor plot point I would be more forgiving, but the climax of the movie depended on it.

I think you got it confused a bit. He got the Jacksonville 6th overall pick for cheap for no other reason than the Jaguars having a rookie GM.

Costner then made the Seahawks pay an arm and a leg to move up just ONE spot, it was anything but cheap. Costner's main selling point was that the Seahawks GM was on the hit seat and that they still would get his QB for $6 million cheap because of draft slot price tag from first overall and 6th overall picks.

Maybe I could have bought that setup trade better.....if that Jacksonville trade was more realistic.
Enjoy

it’s been a while since I saw t but that’s the context for what happened. It wasn’t a movie to show a real interpretation of draft day.

I watch it every year on Draft day, since it came out. I think 3 yrs ago, who knows. Its an entertaining movie - not realistic but entertaining.

I've seen it a couple times

It's a good movie for hate-watching. The unrealistic draft day trades aren't the only thing that spoil the movie - overall there's nothing redeeming about the plot or the characters. Awful film.
