Reading into this: Shurmur & short QBs (& other ponderings)

Beezer : 1/16/2018 10:03 am
Like most here, my head is spinning with all the speculation. Haven't seen this level of it since the year Eli was drafted, and this might be even more nuts due to Eli's presence, a new coach/regime, the high pick. Crazy.

I watched a video of Shurmur this morning (something Eric posted within one of the bazillion threads on the guy) and in that interview, at the Vikings practice facility, there's a clip where Shurmur talks about "short quarterbacks" such as Drew Brees and Case Keenum "finding lanes," etc. He goes on to talk about needing to work to a QB's strengths, so clearly he's not averse to the idea of a shorter QB (Keenum is 6-1, for all you folks speculating about Shurmur bringing him along with him to NY).

Can't help wondering if Keenum's success with Shurmur opens a few options in the Giants FO mindset, headed toward draft day. Granted, other Shurmur QBs have had some size (Sam Bradford's 6-4 and had success last season for Minnesota and Nick Foles is 6-6 and has had relative success). But another QB under Shurmur's influence was Donovan McNabb, a 6-2 mobile guy.

Clearly, no way to know what anyone is really thinking at this insanely early juncture. But for those of us who would welcome the team exploring a trade-down scenario that might yield another pick or two, I can't help thinking about Baker Mayfield being a guy at 6-1 who Shurmur surely would be familiar with, as far as a skill-set. Question there is, how long would he be on the board? Likely not too long, so you couldn't trade down very far.

And what about trading down a bit more and picking up a second second-rounder, then possibly having one or another of Mason Rudolph/Josh Allen/Lamar Jackson be there at the 34th pick? Could that kind of strategerie yield something like the following 4 picks in the first 3 rounds for NYG?

1. Mike McClinchey, OT, Notre Dame (mid-1st after trade)
2. Rudolph/Allen/Jackson at the top of the 2nd
3. Billy Price, OG/OC, Ohio State (mid-2nd, acquired pick)
4. Derrius Guice, RB, LSU at the top of the 3rd (or Sony Michel, RB, Georgia, if Guice is not available that late).

Add a FA O-lineman, a FA LB and grab some defensive players 4 through 7 in the draft and see what happens. On paper, that gives me a pretty good optimism jolt heading through the summer.

My picks might be too wishful, but the Giants haven't been this high on the board in forever, so you never know!

and Shurmur seem like a match made in heaven. Trade down before the Jets and make it happen. Have a feeling he is going to the Jets if we don't take him....
No chance in hell you trade down that far

and still hope to land the QB you love.

Yeah I don’t know about moving around in the draft, but if there’s any offensive guy that I feel confident that can maximize the talents of Mayfield, it’s Shurmur. I would be pretty excited if we landed him.

But then ... enter the Webb factor.

To be determined.
I don't think Josh Allen or Lamar Jackson

are going to last into the second round. I doubt Allen makes it past 10-15. He is raw, but you can't teach the physical skills he has.

If Shurmur is the guy they need to spend some time with him figuring out if he sees a future star in any of these QBs, and if so, go get them. Trading back is lovely when you can just assume your QB will be there when you want him, but if you calculate wrong you end up spending years looking for your guy.

We don't know what Webb will be, but for purposes of this draft you have to assume a 3rd round guy who is learning how to play the NFL game is not the answer.
Trade down

And take the QB with the first round pick you traded down for is the only chance you could take, this speculation is insane though. What coach, if they had a short QB, wouldn't work to find lanes for him to throw, this is something to write home about and speculate. Give it a break already.

How much of a factor is a player who hasn't done anything? They like him for his work ethic and attitude. They have no idea if he can play at this level and that shouldn't be dictating any personnel moves.
If Mayfield is the guy...

You don’t screw around. You take him at 2.

Agree. Also, if the guy you want will likely be picked by the Browns, you have to explore a trade up.

the Giants don't have a 7th round pick this year
PS & DG will have a long time to evaluate the

draft prospects. They'll need it. It's comforting, though, to suppose that Schurmur is an expert on QB's and Gettleman is an expert on linemen.
Mayfield is an exciting player.....

and if you watch him, you’ll see him slide to find lanes or throw rolling out. I think he’s the real deal, but I’m no scout. It’s just that he meets the eye test.
you trade down when there are multiple

players you like. If you're targeting one guy, you take him where you are because you can't be sure he'll still be there.
