Is Tom Brady and the Patriots facing a similar team they....

Tom [Giants fan] : 1/16/2018 2:05 pm
lost to twice in the Super Bowl?

This Jaguars team to me resembles those two Giants teams. Great defense with a mean pass rush. A stable offense with some weapons. I am not going to compare Bortles to Manning but he has shown signs he can handle it.

Of course, with Coughlin having a lot of influence this past year, it seems that the Jaguars built a team similar to those two Giants teams. I think they were on their way there before Coughlin and he just touched it up this past year.

It will be interesting to see if Brady gets as rattled this week as he was in those two Super Bowls. If the Jags get to him early, they have a chance.
I think you could make a case for all three teams.....

in the final four having that type of defense that could pound Brady and throw him off his mark.

The one thing you don't have is a legit starting quarterback IMO that will make the big play.

All three are NFL backup QBs to me......and that's advantage Pats.
that is always been the case
mdc1 : 1/16/2018 2:11 pm : link
in terms of pressuring Brady. It must not be easy or everybody would be doing it. Foxboro presents another interesting issue 2 playoff road games for Jax.
Eh
Greg from LI : 1/16/2018 2:11 pm : link
For one thing, the Giants never had to beat the Patriots at Foxborough in January. That's a tall order. For another, Blake Bortles isn't remotely close to Eli Manning.
I don't think they're really that similar
pjcas18 : 1/16/2018 2:15 pm : link
I think the Jags D is better than the Giants was (on paper), but when you look at offense you can't simply say Bortles isn't Eli.

QB is the most important player on the team.

And as good as the Jags D is, they're not '86 Giants, '85 Bears, '00 Ravens or '15 Broncos good.

they gave up 42 points last week.

To wit: Tom Brady is 18-3 at home in the playoffs
Greg from LI : 1/16/2018 2:16 pm : link
That's okay, I guess.

BTW, Jacksonville's not very good against the run.

And I know PIT was fighting from behind most of the game and has some skill guys but Ben threw for 5 TD's and almost 500 yards passing last week against the #1 pass D in the NFL.

Remember when after the SF game some of the JAX players feared SF provided the blueprint to beat them. I'm not sure that there isn't some truth to that.

Jags D

Would have to play better than they did last week.

BB will be looking at that San Fran tape and comparing what PITT did last week for sure.

It doesn't even seem to me the Pats are playing that terrific...and they are still getting to 30 points.

Just taking them a bit longer I suppose............

They're a great second half team. BB knows how to coach a team to finish games.
The Jag defense

gave up 42 points on Sunday. Big Ben is not Tom Brady. Is this great defense overrated?
Both Giant SB winning teams

could not score over and over like Jacksonville did on Sunday.

Playoff losses:

Tom Brady: 9
Blake Bortles: 0

Number of 40+ point games at Heinz Field:

Blake Bortles: 2
Tom Brady: 0
Greg nailed it...

Playing at a neutral site vs the cozy confines of Foxboro is the difference.

Fortunately for the Jags, the weather won’t be a factor. Unfortunately for the Jags, they are going to need virtually everything to go right on the road in the playoffs two weeks in a row...

If the magic carpet ride continues then the football gods are all in on the Jags this year. If not, the Pats may win by 40.

Let JAX win a Bowl first, then we can compare SB teams.
I know it wasn't the playoffs....
Britt in VA : 1/16/2018 3:33 pm : link
but the Giants did go into Foxboro in 2011 and beat the Patriots, ending a 20 games home winning streak. But that was in November, no January.
Jags dont quite have
twostepgiants : 1/16/2018 4:28 pm : link
Strahan, Osi and Tuck

JPP, Osi and Tuck

if they can generate that kind of pressure, control the ball and clock with Fournette and dont turn over the ball, they have a chance though

Really? The 2011 Giants scored quite a bit on the Packers, didn't they?

Also the 2007 team hung 35 on the Pats in the season finale, though that was a home game.
Other than..
FatMan in Charlotte : 1/16/2018 4:31 pm : link
both teams having an above average D, I don't see similarities at all.

Basically, the Jags rely on Fournette and Bortles scrambling to keep the chains moving. Where are the iconic Eli-like playoff throws? Keenum at least has that on the resume. Bortles is a guy who had more rushing yards than passing two weeks ago.

The two teams have very little in common. The Jags resemble a poor man's Raven team from 2000, but that Ravens D was much better, but they relied on Jamal Lewis to sustain the O and Dilfer to not have turnovers.
Jags' front 7 is legit,
Section331 : 1/16/2018 4:48 pm : link
and their corners are great too. What would concern me if I were a Jax fan is the safeties. They let receivers behind them all day, especially with time running out in the 1st half, and then late in the game. I think McDaniels and Brady will find ways to exploit them.

That and Bortles, I'd be surprised if BB and Patricia don't cook up a gameplan to exploit him.
Can Bortles Have the Kind of Game Eli Had in Green Bay in 08?
clatterbuck : 1/16/2018 6:26 pm : link
Probably not and that's the big difference. Can Bortles engineer the kind of drive Eli did right before halftime in Dallas? Probably not. Do the Jags have receivers like Plax, Toomer (2008), Nicks, Cruz, Manningham (2012) at the top of their games? Not saying they can't win in Foxboro but they have a small window and Bortles needs to play the game of his life.
Yeah...

They're legit rushing the passer. They're average at best against the run, and that's probably being overly kind.
I'd say defensively they are the opposite of the Giants 2011 defense
USAF NYG Fan : 1/16/2018 7:17 pm : link
Giants' defense during the 2011 season was not good that at all but they turned it on in the post-season. Jags were dominant on defense during the season but don't seem to be doing so well in the postseason so far.
Hard to believe,
Doomster : 1/16/2018 10:03 pm : link
that the defense gave up more points that year than they scored......

The defense gave up 400 points....and they were 7th in scoring in the NFC......

But Eli was otherworldly that year......he was the one that drove the bus in 2011....
