Sean Payton Photographed Mocking Vikings

bumpsinthenight : 1/16/2018 3:39 pm
I Really like Sean Payton but this is the second time recently doing something to taunt an opponent. A bit classless move for a head coach in my opinion.

Quote:
Leber said the Saints coach made the motion after kicker Wil Lutz connected on a 43-yard field goal to give New Orleans a 24-23 lead with 25 seconds left.

Payton was asked about the gesture at a press conference on Tuesday and said it was directed toward "a group of fans" and was "good playoff fun."

Quote:

Payton previously made headlines last month for making a choking gesture toward Atlanta Falcons running back Devonta Freeman during the teams' Week 14 game.

The NFL fined Payton $10,000 for "improperly entering the playing field" for a separate incident during the Dec. 7 meeting with the Falcons.

didn't he miss 3 in that game? If I recall he and Petitgout were in a "false start" vs. "missed FG" contest in that one. Luke won, I think he had 6. :-)

Called it!

"No penalty, so it doesn't matter"

Funny - I must be imagining the part where Sean Payton got a SEASON LONG PENALTY for his bullshit.

Also, don't worry - the feeling is mutual. I don't think you bring anything valuable to any discussion. You simply find yourself in the middle of countless debates by taking the opposite stance of the majority anywhere possible and pretending that you know more than everyone else.

You're basically radar. Congrats.

Watching you contradict yourself at every turn now sure is fun, though. I'm enjoying it.

That was one of the most aggravating regular season losses I've ever watched. Osi freaking OWNED the great Walter Jones in that game. Giants totally outplayed them, but between the penalties (pretty sure Frank Walker had one of his patented personal fouls in that one, too) and Feely's incompetence, they lost a game they should have won on the road against the best in the NFC at the time. That was the year the Seahawks went to the Super Bowl against Pittsburgh.

for his awful Q4 decisions. The first challenge was defensible. The 2nd challenge, a handful of plays later, was abysmal. They had plenty of time to review that play and Keenum clearly wasn't down.

And the D formation they were in for the final play was pathetic. Guarding against 5 yard outs made sense with ~15 seconds and enough time for 2-3 plays + a FG. Doing it with 10 sec left when the Vikes needed 15-20 yards to get into FG range was dumbfounding.

They practice that defense . All teams do. It’s called “no sidelines.” What happened was the S panicked , then dove. Stay up; play the ball. The refs don’t want to call DPI on that play.

I don't care what they call it, the Saints had just used a TO and should've been defending (at least) 10 yards further down the field. There's 10 sec left. That means 1 play and you have to kick assuming you get OOB. Which means, the routes must gain you at least 15-20 yards, yet the Saints CBs were guarding 5 yard outs. They needed to be at least 10 yards deeper so that the S (who ultimately whiffed) doesn't have the primary coverage responsibility on the WR there.
Where did I mention anything about Payton other than this story?

I said I had no problem with him mocking a set of fans who ripped off someone else's choreographed bit. What does that have to do with anything else?

The answer is, it doesn't. Just another case of shitty posters saying dumb shit because someone has the temerity to call out the fact that a sacred cow on the Giants is a punk.

Odell Beckham doesn't care about you. He also probably doesn't care much about being a Giant. Tell yourselves whatever you want, but he doesn't care how much you kid yourselves otherwise.

Let me get this straight. You are ok with a headcoach doing this and setting a shit example but go berserk when a player does it?

Talk about double standard.

Again, if they credit the Iceland team, and even bring in the teams captain to "lead the fans", how is it ripping them off?

I don't even think it matters where they were lined up - the bottom line is that Marcus Williams blindly threw his body at Diggs' ankles and made one of the worst plays you'll ever see.

He was positioned to stop the reception right where it was caught and absolutely whiffed. You have to keep the play in front of you. As soon as Diggs went up for that ball, Williams needed to make sure he wrapped him up.

To not even get a fingertip on the guy considering where he was when Diggs caught it is horrendous.

Beckham gets personal foul after pissing like a dog... That's ok. Sean Payton throws Iceland's version of the Tomahawk Chop back in the fan's face at no penalty cost, and he's a dick.

People will go to great lengths to avoid accepting the possibility that someone on the Giants could be something other than awesome.

He doesn't care about you, either - but you spend inordinate amounts of time thinking about him and talking about him.

You said you have no problem with Payton acting like an asshole because he wasn't penalized. Yet, even when Beckham isn't penalized (i.e.. the kicking net), you have every criticism in the book lined up for him.

If you can't see the double standard, that's a shame. It's pretty clear.

No doubt. Even Deion would've made a better tackling effort!

Credit to Shurmur(!!!) for the play design, but if your S is the last line of defense, he shouldn't be the primary cover guy on the other team's top WR too. Someone on the Saints had to have blown an assignment (or a shitty D design).

So you've got no problem with a head coach acting like a immature dick, but do have a problem when OBJ kicks a net.

Got it...
and I think the defense was a pretty standard late game call
Greg from LI : 1/16/2018 5:23 pm : link
It's a deep zone that is supposed to a)not let anyone get deep for an open Hail Mary b)protect the sidelines. I'm not an Xs and Os expert by any means, but I've seen that kind of coverage in that situation many times. The Vikings can't stop the clock, so you have two priorities: keep them out of the end zone and keep them in bounds. The call wasn't the problem, the execution was. All Williams has to do is let Diggs catch the ball in front of him and then tackle him, and the game is over.

Yeah someone lost Diggs - if I remember right, Shurmur had them in a bunch on the right side of the formation. PJ Williams followed Rudolph underneath and Crawley covered Jarius Wright. New Orleans had Marcus Williams and Bell as their 2 deep safeties and Diggs looked like he ran a deep corner route.

I still can't really believe that happened.

Greg - I didn't even bring up Beckham on this thread. I was thinking about him at all.

Others - the kicking net thing isn't an apt comparison. I sympathize with Payton for mocking what I feel is a lame action from the Minnesota fans. Now lets say that in the playoff game last year that after Beckham's third or fourth drop the Packers started pretending to marry the kicking net...that would have been pretty funny.

And here's the post-game thread from the kicking net game. What upset me from that game wasn't the kicking net...it was him taking his helmet off and giving Baltimore an extra 15 yards on their final drive late in a one score game, and then saying "let them throw the flag" after being told he got a personal foul.

But hey, let's just make shit up about what I said instead...

Where has any Giants fan said beckham's antics are ok??

You're resorting to child like tactics where you twist shit around to suit your argument. Not once has any bbier said "ehh it's ok if Beckham acts like an asshole or takes a bad penalty" -- never. Nearly everyone acknowledges his faults while maintaining the belief that Beckham is probably (hopefully) worth the trouble. You know, LOGIC.

In your world we defend beckham's every move blindly and unconditionally and you want him gone at all costs and all blame him for all the Giants problems. And the sun on your planet is purple.

I have pointed this out numerous times, but Jim Fassel got allegedly blackballed by the Giants for far less shit than Sean Payton has pulled in his time in NO both on and off the field. Not to mention he was trying to orchestrate his way out of NO and to LA last off-season.

I thought it was funny in 2011 when the Giants mocked Rodgers' discount double check during the divisional round. I personally started doing that to some annoying packers fans in the bar as the game turned into a rout.

I guess Payton thought the game was over and lost his focus on the field of play. His players on defense seemed to think the game was over too. He’ll learn to next time wait until the game is over and then mock the fans. He’s obviously immensely talented as a play designer and he’s got balls of steel. But I think it’s also pretty clear that Payton is kind of a jerk.

I think Payton is a jerk and villain for not shutting down and attempting to cover up the bounty system that Williams ran - he clearly crossed the line. a little non-profane teasing of some fans on the road is nothing in comparison.
