A couple of months ago, Youtube began to flag and demonetize every video that we would upload citing that the content may not be suitable for most advertisers. Then, you would have to submit that video for a review and usually in 24 hours they would lift the flag and you can earn money again (pennies). Meanwhile, the entire time they are under review (and not paying us) youtube is STILL running ads and earning money but not sharing it with the people who actually created the videos.
Today, they sent out an e-mail indicating that if you do not have 1000 subscribers AND 4000 hours of view time by Feb 20, they are demonetizing all of those youtube channels until they do meet those requirements.
This screws me for both of my youtube channels. A blatant move by youtube/google to basically screw people out of revenue.
Funny... it is not about the money (and we are not talking about a lot of clams here BTW). It is about a company basically stealing from people.
IMO it's like having a store in the mall and your rent is a percentage of sales. If you're a niche store trying to build you get to try it rent free while they foot the bill.
Just my two cents but it seems like good business.

They are not providing the platform for free. They only share a small fraction of the revenue. So, they are earning money on every video that people upload off of the backs of those who are creating the videos. It also drives traffic to their site. In my opinion it is just a short sighted money grab.
reality is google is a for profit business and has every right to impose conditions on whose videos they host for no fees. sucks, but it's their right. You don't have to post there.
I know it sucks for you but maybe someone will start a similar platform for newbies.
Back in the day when I did standup you didn't get paid and you had to bring people along who would buy at least two drinks each. It's business. If you're creative you have to build a fan base.
I'd agree with you EricJ if they were refusing to pay all content providers, but they allow you to build an audience for free and if you can reach 1000 subscribers then you start getting paid. Considering what must be their enormous costs relative to those of small content producers that seems like a fair deal.
If your costs are enough and you are still struggling to get to 1000 subscribers then it's time to consider whether the business is viable.
If you are just worried about losing some of your income, I empathize, but don't feel they're in the wrong for doing this.

I read it that they’re taking 100%, not a fraction. Though they probably needed to set a floor

To be clear, this is not a business for me. Really doing it for fun or a hobby. The small change earned from the ads is just a bonus and is not used to pay ANY bills here.
I am really speaking out not for myself but in general about a company that is really being unfair. Especially when you look back at what I wrote initially with the flagging of every video. When videos are initially uploaded, you get a jump start with a lot of views from your subscriber base. So, they started to turn off your earnings during that time citing it is "unfit for most advertisers" but the entire time they are still running ads but just not paying you.
Yes, they have the right to change their user agreement at any time.
Basically, there isn't even any harm done here. No fees are being charged. They just are demonetizing people who barely have any followers.
That isn't unfair - it is simply different from what you are used to.
Similar with Youtube. Where else are you going to post your videos? Google has the monopoly so they don't have to be fair when it's time to share the earnings.
YouTube picks and chooses who gets compensated by now only paying creators who choose to align themselves with youtubes (google) Global***agenda.
This very recent change doesn't change much except anger many many creators, thus diluting youtubes overall new content as others scatter Around to twitch etc etc out of spite etc etc and post new content there

YouTube does not have a monopoly on posting video. There are loads of alternatives.
Ron, I would love to share that but I have been here a while and know better.
If you want 1000 subscribers, you should share it with BBI.

He used to make great money, now he does it for fun. He took a break for a couple of months and he is starting back up. It is easy to get burned out.
Unfortunately the odds of making a career out of it is over. That opportunity has jumped the shark.
haha ! too funny. Quite the opposite. This is right behind me in my office. Look like something a rapper would have?

Right? I mean how better to get some than to tell us what they are so we can make fun of you properly then you get paid?
Imagine if you could monitize getting mocked on BBI? Elite Mobster would be a millionaire
