Should the Giants target Jarvis Landry?

Giantsfan79 : 1/17/2018 12:34 pm
Pros: OBJs close friend and former LSU teammate. 400 catches in his first 4 years. Younger than Marshall our current #2.

Cons: A bit of a hothead, twitter guy. Has had his share of tantrums. Is likely to cost at least 10 million a year, maybe more. [although if you cut Marshall and his 5 million dollar salary that goes a long way in paying Landry.]

I have no idea of the dynamic of OBJ and Landry works. Does their close friendship allow them to take their games to the next level or does it turn into a rivalry over who's #1. Where does the risk/reward fall?

personality in that locker room. And the overlap with Shepard makes it a misallocation of cap $$.
He's a good player
BigBlueHens : 1/17/2018 1:53 pm : link
but will not be worth it with the Giants having to pay Odell. To many other needs on this team to be allocating all the cap to Wide Receivers.
Big fucking No !!

He's a bit of a shit starter OBJ's buddy =trouble .
I prefer another WR with size that can also get deep .
Bring Marshal back with a back up plan in case he is toast
MacHandley's O was a train wreck he was terrible with player personal especially at the O-line and proclaiming
that Perkins was the anointed starter .
Your Pros are awful
est1986 : 1/17/2018 2:11 pm : link
Sign him because he is younger than Marshall (who isn't younger than Marshall???) and sign him because he is OBJ's best friend... What are we trying to do? put together a a dance group or a football team?

He does what Shepard does making him not worth what he will cost on the market (He'll probably make $10,000,000 more than Shepard will next year) and yes he is a better talent than Shepard but only by a small margin but his character makes that margin even smaller...

I like Landry he can make big plays in the slot, not much on the outside but he also brings value as a return man but that's a BIG PASS for me assuming he wants big time 10-15 MIL per year type money
high risk reward

with these LSU guys with low emotional intelligence. We need smarter guys that can work as teammates and know their role.
Terrific player
Marty866b : 1/17/2018 2:19 pm : link
Good return guy and great YAC guy. MUCH better player then Shepard but we have Shepard and we have way more important needs then a slot receiver.
Jarvis is going to get huge contract
gidiefor : Mod : 1/17/2018 2:28 pm : link
how can the Giants afford him when they need to buy an offensive line, a RB, and sign OBJ - not to mention a few other FA signings like LB and CB

Just doesn't make sense at all -- let alone the crazy factor
Terrific player, but I'm not sure he's a great fit.
Section331 : 1/17/2018 2:33 pm : link
He'll command a lot of money, and I think the Giants need a WR with size to line up opposite Odell. We also know that DG likes big wides, so I doubt Landry would be a target for him.
He's just a guy and he'll

Better than Landry?

I don't know about that. Landry led the NFL in catches this year. Albeit, he's not a downfield/big play guy and his YPR numbers are paltry. He's still a good player, though - and I think he's a better slot WR than Shepard.

He did find the endzone more this year than he has in the past, which was a knock on his production before.

Landry is a more explosive Steve Smith (NYG), IMO
.
arcarsenal : 1/17/2018 2:59 pm : link
FWIW, I think Shepard provides much better value (well, he will once Landry is paid)

But 1:1, I'd prefer Landry if I had a choice.
Be a nice threat

to add to the O. But it would blow up the salary cap. Particularly when you consider OBJ has a big pay day coming.

Thing that amuses me is the "me centric" aspect of value in the NFL and contracts. They should start defining playoff appearances, wins, plays that result in points as measures in their compensation. Who knows, maybe the do, but doubt it. The rest of the world does not give shit away without substantial results, time to start doing it. Look at the Eli situation over time or the Peyton situation.
Yes they should

Sign Landry

Draft Barkley

Draft/sign Defense and Oline with all extra resources left
Or perhaps Sammy Watkins?

My friend,Shepard is better then Landry? You either aren't serious or you don't watch the Dolphin games. I live down in South Florida so I watch almost all their games and I assure you, Landry is not only better then Shepard but the difference is significant. Landry does EVERYTHING better then Sterling. If Shepard was a free agent this season there is no question that Landry would command more money,

“No. 3 wide receiver: Loser

While the tight ends are winners, the wide receivers further down the depth chart should be losers due to Shurmur's variety in personnel groupings. Under McAdoo, the Giants ran three-wide receiver sets almost exclusively (until the wide receiver corps was wiped out by injuries in Week 5).
Thielen played 92 percent of the offensive snaps this season and No. 2 receiver Stefon Diggs played 69 percent of the offensive snaps. Beckham and Sterling Shepard can loosely be slotted into those roles.
The drop-off came with the third receiver, as Laquon Treadwell played just 45 percent of the offensive snaps for the Vikings this season. Compare that to the 72 percent of the snaps Giants No. 3 wide receiver Victor Cruz played in 2016, and it's clear that the role of third receiver could be minimized in Shurmur's offense.”

Limited quantity = High prices

FA market from a Miami Perspective

Potential options include Vikings and former Dolphins impending free agent Joe Berger, who was Pro Football Focus’ 18th-best guard this season, Tennessee’s Josh Kline (23rd), San Francisco’s Brandon Fusco (21st), the Giants’ D.J. Fluker (58th) or — depending on their price — Green Bay’s Jahri Evans (30th), Kansas City’s Zach Fulton (15th), Dallas’ Jonathan Cooper (35th), the Giants’ Justin Pugh (tied for 53rd) Seattle’s Luke Joekel (tied for 53rd). Carolina’s Andrew Norwell (rated third by PFF) would be costly.”
â–ª Offensive tackle: The Dolphins very likely won’t pay Ja’Wuan James the $9.3 million he’s due.
If he doesn’t take a big cut — or if he’s not asked back at all — the Dolphins’ options are limited. They could select a right tackle in the first two days of the draft, with Texas’ Connor Williams an option at No. 11. They could move Davis there.
The least appealing option is signing another free agent, because the right tackle class is awful, with only one veteran starter Breno Giacomini (rated 85th among 86 tackles by PFF), several backups (LaAdrian Waddle, Michael Schofield, etc) and Bills and former Hurricanes player Seantrel Henderson, whose career has been marred by injuries and suspensions.”

Just signing a Norwell alone
Defenderdawg : 1/17/2018 5:20 pm : link
“Because the Panthers gave guard Trai Turner a big (and well-deserved) deal before the 2017 season and signed left tackle Matt Kalil to a five-year, $55.5 million deal, very little cap room is left to work with All-Pro guard Andrew Norwell, who is a free agent.
That means Carolina could see Norwell go – perhaps to the Giants, who need help up front and whose free agency decisions will be run by new general manager Dave Gettleman, the man who scooped up Norwell as an undrafted free agent in 2014.
Norwell has earned a big contract. As much as Carolina would like to keep him long-term, the Panthers may not be able to give him one.”

I hope Gettleman spends resources building from the inside out, as he talked about in his presser.

WR, like CB, is always a need...but this team needs real guards and tackles more than it needs another diva WR

Landry is a aless explosive Smith. Stronger but less explosive.

Marty....I’ll place my bet on Shepard. Landry does nothing for me. Number of catches? An overrated stat. Shepard is a tougher cover. And he has more upside.

I’d also bet on Miami letting him walk. And his free agent contract won’t be anything close to what he expects to make. He’s not a number 1.

I wish Duggan..
FatMan in Charlotte : 1/18/2018 11:44 am : link
would dig deeper instead of looking at the current Vikings sets.

The reason Treadwell was only used on 45% of snaps is because he's been inconsistent to downright terrible. With different personnel, Shurmur may adapt the formations.

Contrast that with McAdoo who had Ellison play less than 40% of snaps, not because of talent, but because the system blew.
They should have taken Landry a few picks after they took Odell
Phil in LA : 1/18/2018 11:46 am : link
having failled that, all their WR FA dough is gonna have to go to Odell.
If the Giants are going to target a WR in free agency,
Brown Recluse : 1/18/2018 11:59 am : link
it seems likely they'll go after someone big on the outside again - or give Marshall another chance to prove his career isn't over.

This free agent WR class doesn't look great anyway and upgrading the offensive line will take money.

Great minds!
Jarvis is ILL.
Glover : 1/18/2018 12:18 pm : link
He is like a blue collar Beckham. Yea, he's an excitable guy, but I dont see him as a penalty or fine waiting to happen. I dont see Beckham that way either.
They want as many good WRs as they can get. Marshall was supposed to be that tough yardage, possession/red-zone receiver, but for whatever reason, that never panned out in that miserable season that just passed. Likely the Giants would still be looking for a tall, tough, WR, like a Devin Funchess or Dez Bryant, dare I say. Marshall was supposed to fill that role, and Engram will be that from a TE/WR position, which is nice, but they should get a tall big guy who is tough and makes catches that move the sticks. They dont grow on trees, but hey, if somehow a Jarvis Landry fits into the Giants budget, then I'm all for it, but that seems unlikely.
Richardson!
