Didn't know Shurmur played at MSU with Banks or that he was a 3-year starting OL (a C, no less) under Perles, including in the Rose Bowl.

but after what happened to McAdoo during his abbreviated stay, not sure it’s so easy to be your own guy as Banks suggests . Coughlin went through the same shit; it almost took him down. Additionally teams are getting rid of coaches for 1 bad season (Del Rio), or,really, no bad seasons (Caldwell.). Minority-share ownership is drawing a bead on Tomlin in Pittsburgh. Tomlin, for chrissakes. It’s getting ridiculous save for Hue Jackson, who is getting more slack in Cleveland than John McKay got with the Bucs.

Keenly interested in the NFC Championship this weekend . Zimmer is a defensive coach so Shurmur is the co HC in a sense . Tough place to play. Tough defense to move it on .

Banks precludes the whole be your own person thing by stating that Shurmer is a class act and hard working guy. So you can read between the lines and realize that if he is still that guy, he will be okay. He's saying the NY influences won't get in his way. He didn't say successful.

Hue Jackson was dealt a bad hand. Can't really tell if he is HCing material, accumulating average players, means some average players are going to get cut. If you have 10 picks, you're dart throwing if you have no personnel experience, which is what happened in Cleveland. They let go of some key players too.

As far as the Bucs go. McKay was a horrible coach. He berated players as we've all seen on him being mic'd up. I was going to college in Fla at the time and the team was comical, save Leroy Selmon. They passed on Dorsett which sent shock waves about. There was one game they were going to win as someone broke a 60 yard run or long pass and he dropped the ball at the 10, with no defenders near him. McKay was not the man for an expansion team and wasn't helped out by whoever the GM was.

PS: If you listen to Joe Thomas and some other Browns' players, it sure seems they think Shurmer should not have been fired and could have been the guy (said without stepping on Hue's toes), like they're doing in Houston by throwing Smith under the bus. Shurmer had their respect in Cleveland. He was my pick from day 1 (during the Schwartz initial rumors) as I was betting everything no way Schwartz was getting hired. Not a Mara type.

Re the Pittsburgh situation - I've never understood why Tomlin is considered a bad coach and Cowher is considered a near Hall of Famer when they have just about identical accomplishments.

Tomlin actually has a better record and his team has been more consistent in contending and making the playoffs. Cowher survived a few sub .500 seasons. In his defense, he didn't have a HOF QB most of his years.

Maybe Shurmur hires Banks to coach the linebackers.
Banks would get the best out of them and talk about a voice that will command the room.

no idea he was at MSU with Banks

from his playing days

I like the hire. I can't wait til this season ends and we rebuild
